Leigh Bodden inks with NE (1 Viewer)

Springs, Bodden, Hobbs, Wilhite and Wheatley makes for nice depth. Gives the younger guys a chance to develop and possibly move Hobbs to nickel or rotational use.

Guy was awesome with the Browns and was the only defensive back on the Lions to make an interception. At 27, he's still young and should contribute quite nicely.

Good signing for New England.

He kind of fell off the radar in DeToilet,

which many good players seem to do.

I like the Springs / Bodden combo in NE this season.

As a Patriots fan I am ecstatic with Springs and Bodden now pushing Hobbs to the nickel back where he belongs.

Now if they can address a pass rush (Trade for Peppers, Sign Jason Taylor, or through the draft), my fantasy defense might just return to the top 5 I had hoped for last season.

I can't believe Bodden can be had for this cheap. The guy used to be our #1 corner and was pretty damn good before we shipped him off to Detroit. He's going to make a comeback this year bigtime.

Cliff Notes from his just aired Sirius radio interview...

- NE was his first choice and stop. He wanted to play for the Pats from day one.

Him and NE couldn't agree on money for a long term deal.

-Agreed to a one year "prove it deal" to show what he can do, and then sign a LTC to stay.

- He had other more lucrative offers but ultimately decided that it was in his best interest to play with a winner and show what he can do, as opposed to signing a long term deal elsewhere and get stuck in another bad situation.

Risky strategy. If I'm his agent I'm calling him an idiot for doing this, but as a player I would see the appeal. Best case scenario: Plays great for the Pats and wins a ring, then signs for something like $40m/5yrs with NE or someone elseWorst case scenario: Tears an ACL in camp and spends the rest of his life wishing he'd taken $8m/3yrs with someone else.

I was hoping the Lions would give him one more year under the new regime.

It would have to be "someone else." The Pats wouldn't give essentially that same deal to Asante Samuel, so I doubt they would give it to Bodden. I'm not saying he's not worth that much, but the Pats likely won't think he is. Plus with many other well-established Pats players up for extensions or new deals, I suspect he will not be a high priority.

I think they'd love to get a solid year from him and have Wheatley/Wilhite/yet to be drafted rookie be in a position to replace him next year should he be too expensive.

Bodden didn't fit the zone cover tampa2 Detroit tried to run last year. good players can have poor season when not utilized correctly or not put in positions to succeed. he'll do fine in Bill's disguising Man scheme's. the flipside to Bodden(a man Cover) bombing in a zone coverage is Jason David playing well in Zone coverage as a colt but llooking completely lost tyrin to man cover for the saints.

I strongly disagree about his performance with the Browns, but expect him to produce in New England. With the surrounding talent the Pats possess he should produce well and trick another team into paying #1 money to him next season.

I love what the Patriots do. They are one of a few teams in the league where guys very much WANT to go play for and are actually willing to take below market deals to prove themselves. Heck, even Randy Moss did it. And, for the most part, it's worked out exceptionally well for the Patriots.

It will be interesting to see how the Eagles [sean Jones] and the Patriots [Leigh Bodden] do with former Browns castoffs who are now playing for a winning organization on one-year 'show me' deals.

Don't sleep on Greg Lewis.Yeah, I know more than a 1 year deal, but this is Greg Lewis we're talking about.

The funny thing for the old-time Patriot fans is this is a franchise that was considered football Siberia for their first 35 years or so. The Tuna got the ball rolling and BB has taken it to the next level. If this were 1990 a guy like Bodden either would have no interest in the Pats or they'd pay him a 25 mil bonus and than wondered what went wrong.

 If you look back, you'll see that I was a big Bodden supporter. As a Browns fan I wish we would have had him back last year (although I wouldn't have wanted to give up the big man in the middle). How he was had for the minimum is beyond me. This is a solid pickup. I'm only angry, because the Browns didn't sign him.

What are you disagreeing about? That he was the #1 corner there? I'm not sure how you can disagree with that, because it's a fact. I thought he played very well when he was on the field, but that's a different issue, IMO.

Looks like Bodden's contract wasn't correctly reported yesterday:

Breaking down Bodden deal

According to a league source who has seen the contract, Leigh Bodden's one-year deal with the Patriots is not for the veteran minimum of $750,000, as has been reported by ESPN and NFL.com.

The source said the deal is one year for $2.25 million with $1 million guaranteed. There are no incentives in the deal, a la Shawn Springs, but the deal does include a no-franchise clause, allowing Bodden to test the market again if he has a big season in New England and an extension can't be worked out with the Patriots after the 2009 season.

I disagree that he was pretty damn good. I've gone in depth as to why elsewhere on this board. I'll just summarize, the big plays he made did not offset all of the other plays he gave up. Anytime the opposing team needed a 3rd down conversion, attacking Bodden seemed to be plan A...and it worked too often. I think he'll do ok in New England because Bellichik is the type of coach that does a good job masking deficiencies, he won't put Bodden in situations in which he'll be exploited. Like putting him in single coverage on 3rd & 7.He's an avg #2.
