Falcons | Lelie voids contract, will become a free agent

Sat, 27 Jan 2007 19:46:56 -0800

Bill Williamson, of the Denver Post, reports Atlanta Falcons WR Ashley Lelie has voided his contract with the team. Lelie will become an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

This looks like a good move to me. The FA WR class is not very deep and Lelie could get a decent deal from one of the teams in need of an athletic WR (Houston, SD, KC, Minnesota).

he might be a good fit in a place like SD, where he could be complementary weapon to gates, & vertical threat to keep defenses honest against LT...

if moss & porter are gone in OAK, count chocula likes vertical game... KC doesn't have a special WR corp, & kennison is approaching mid-thirties, i think... there are probably a few places he could start, though i agree he hasn't proven he is worth big money... best season he had 1,000 yards & about 7 TDs, but he is somewhat one-dimensional deep threat, doesn't particularly like to go over the middle or block... its unclear if he gets a contract he wants, though stallworth & he may be best options avail at WR in a free agent cycle lean on skill position talent...

seems like the kind of WR Al Davis would love. Speed to go deep, would come to them with some negativity around him as most think he's "eh" and not great.

Which just happens to be one talent owners and GMs seem to love. There will be enough interested teams to get him a good contract and better place to shine. He was practically useless with Vick.

I'm not sure KC will go after him, but it's possible. They already have the deep threat in Samie Parker, although he hasn't done much. Kennison is 34. The Chiefs need a primary WR, not Lelie.

SD could be good. I wouldn't be surprised to see Miami interested.

I think he will go to Oakland or San Diego. I think the Patriots should look into picking this guy up. He could be the top WR they need. Caldwell and Gaffney are okay but Lelie could be a big time reciever.

I'll be shocked if he doesn't take Stallworth's spot on the Eagles roster.
that thought crossed my mind, but if he is going to cost as much as stallworth, they would just keep him... or if they are both effectively priced out of PHI's comfort zone, than more likely they get neither... if lelie came at a significant discount relative to stallworth, you could be right, but not sure if that will be the case?

I think Lelie is much cheaper than Stallworth. That is where my thought came from.

I think I remember him claiming to be worth #1 money in Denver

lelie's best season is probably comparable to stallworth's best season...

stallworth hasn't exactly had a stellar career so far, & estimating his value is complicated by his checkered medical file & history of missed time...

if you go by what have you done lately, stallworth admittedly has the hotter hand & looked like a very dangerous & explosive weapon when he played in 06... projecting his stats over 16 games, he would have been one of the top WRs in the league... but that is precisely the problem, he again missed a lot of time (in 05, i think he did actually play in every game, but a few ailments did seem to impact him at times)...

so i guess i agree stallworth probably a hotter commodity, & more likely to parlay his 06 season into a bigger contract... some attractive attributes are his speed & pedigree, but lelie is near identical there... stallworth did look a little better this season in some of the intermediate catches, & probably a bit more versatile, & appeared to catch the ball more naturally than i remembered from the past...

one thing that might not help lelie is he could have garnered rep as a malcontent for not honoring his contract with DEN & forcing a trade... although i didn't think of it at the time, PHI strikes me as a team that emphasizes character, which might exclude lelie from consideration after the TO fiasco...

as far as it goes otherwise, lelie would seem to have similar skill set to stallworth, & would mesh well with brown as far as a complementary WR...

San Diego and Philly make the most sense. Darkhorse: Minnesota.

Add to what Bob says and point out that he either has just 1 or 2 red zone TDs in his career and he really defines the one dimensional deep threat. Normall it's a bit exaggerated but with him, geesh.I expect he'll cry no one is offerring enough money and sign much later than most FAs.

Lelie makes me think of Ben Watson. Ungodly measurables that don't translate. Looks great up to the moment that it's time to catch the ball. Then, he drops it. I'll admit I didn't see a lot of his ATL games, but that's what I saw in Denver. I saw a shold lot of Ashley running poor routes, thinking athletic ability is enough. Everybody is a great athlete in the NFL.

He's got the potential, but I question his work ethic and what he would do for a locker room. That said, he's worth #1 money in Oakland

He's a run of the mill kind of guy in my book. Better than Gaffney, but only marginally. I can't see teams clammoring for him, and he'll be lucky to get #2 money. Never mind #1 money.

Could see him in SD.....don't know that I like that since he burned Jammer so many times....

Oh wait, so did all fast WRs......

BigTime ?I don't think so.My list for Lelie's new home,1. Philadelphia2. SD3. Minnesota4. Oakland5. New England

Add San Fran to this list fellas. Alex has Bryant, but they might be inclined to go after him. I've heard Drew Bennett is on their radar too.

Good luck with that Lelie, you'll wish that you kept your old contract because you would have at least had one more year of decent pay.
