Lendale White Quote re: Vince Young (1 Viewer)

For those who don't believe Young can make such a difference, listen to running back LenDale White, Leinart's teammate at Southern California. White probably would have been the MVP of the college championship game in January had Young not taken the honor away for Texas.

"I would never trade away the three years I had with Matt as my quarterback," White said. "But if I was an NFL team, I don't know how you could not take Vince Young. A quarterback's job is to control the game. When a guy throws for 260 and runs for 200 in the biggest game of the year, he doesn't just control a game, he shows he can completely take it over.

"Nothing against Matt, but Vince has to be the No. 1 guy."

I like LenDale White just a little more now.

Dig that avatar, Hobbes.

LenDale speaks from experience. Young just took over the 4th quarter of the Rose Bowl and threw his team on his back. That was one of, if not THE sickest individual performance I have seen in college football in a game of that magnitude.

He did a similar thing the year before too, against Michigan if I remember correctly. If a guy consistently performs a certain way, it's a trend and not a mirage. I think Young is a very big time, big game player.http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/foot...1/01/rose.bowl/

Young ran for 192 yards and four touchdowns, passed for 180 yards and another score and drove the Longhorns to the winning kick.

 What's more impressive...

Young leading his offense for 41 points against the ~30th ranked defense in the country or Leinart leading his offense for 38 points against the 2nd ranked defense in the country?

You switch defenses and it's not even a game.

The QB for Fresno St. looked unstoppable against USC's defense.

The problem is that much like Vick vs FSU years ago, he took over both games with his legs, not his arm. Most people speculate that he will NOT be able to do this at the next level and then what happens when he is forced to try and do it with his arm alone?

Good point, UCS's D was not very good last year and looked expecially atrocious in that game. I guess good O and players can do that to a team, but UT and Young were certianly not the only ones to do it to USC. As someone who watches a good bit of college football, wone thing I can tell you is that SC teams normally tackle very well. Last years team did not and it killed them.

You make a valid point, but, as has been stated on here before, Young, while not exactly working with a bare cupboard, wasn't working with Reggie Bush, Lendale White, Jarrett, and that TE (Name?). He also wasn't basically at home, although some have premised that Young and the Horns now pretty much own the Rose Bowl ;) . Of course, he did lead Texas to a comeback win at night in Colombus, Ohio, throwing the winning td pass against the 4th ranked defense in the country.

EDIT: All fun aside, that was truly a slugfest of a game, and even upon viewing the replay, it's astonishing how both teams simply refuse to bow down and quit. Fantastic, fantastic football game.

I agree. It was right up there with the other sickest individual Rose Bowl performance I remember seeing...when Vince Young torched my Michigan squad the year before.Torch them once...shame on them.

Torch them twice...draft him high!

Blah. Blah. Blah...USC's D was so bad...Yadda, Yadda, Yadda. What you saw at the Rose Bowl was the result of Young's special talent, not USC's poor D. Give the guy the credit he deserves.

 Yes it was. Bottom line, USC's defense was not national championship caliber which cost them.

Twice. Did the same thing to Michigan the year before. Actually he just pounded the everloving piss out of Michigan. They couldn't even lay a hand on him.

I think VY had a great game and it was incredible watching it in person (although it was killing me), but Bagger brings up a good point. The FSU QB also looked like quite good against the crappy SC D.

College is not the NFL.

I think Eric Crouch took over a lot of games for Nebraska. I'd still take Gibran Hamdan over him.

What an incredibly stupid thing to say. This guy just seems intent on self destruction. He may well think that and that's fine. Lots of people think Young should be over Leinart. But ripping on a team mate like that is just idiotic.

There is noway I would want this guy on my team. Tossing a teamate under the bus, especially with the draft a week away and millions of dollars at stake, gah truly idiotic.

I don't get you, Joe. It seems to me White's just praising Young, while going out of his way not to be derogatory towards Leinart. He's just stating the truth (the numbers don't lie), out of respect for an outstanding player who had an outstanding game.

It's not just throwing a former teammate under the bus, Leinart could have gone pro last year and done just fine. He decided to come back and give USC and White another shot at a national championship. You would think Leinart's USC teammates would respect that and thank him for the selfless move. I guess not.

Hi wampus,The truth doesn't have anything to do with him being stupid though. I'm sure it's true that he thinks Leinart isn't as good as Young. It's certainly true Young carried his team in the Rose Bowl.

But you don't spout off that your QB isn't as good as the other guy with 4 days to go before the draft.

There's a reason so many people hate TO. It's stuff like this.

Extremely stupid thing to say. I'd say this cost him thousands. Maybe hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Hi bagger,I disagree. I think these guys look for every single shred of data they can find. They go over these guys with a microscope. For the team already worried about his character, this TO / Favre moment could be what pushes them over.

We'll never know for sure but not unlike a Randy Moss slide, I can see this costing him a slot or two for sure. Maybe more.

I don't know that I agree. I don't think I would say it will definitely cost him, but I think it could. If a team already is viewing him questionably and then sees this is an example of how he stands up for his team's QB, it could be the proverbial straw that makes the team choose someone else.By itself it isn't a smoking gun. But from someone who has already raised a lot of question about himself it just makes it that much harder to be confident about picking him.

Not sure who is handling public relations and management for White at this point but someone might consider teaching him the finer points of handling a presser or providing the media with quotable material. Conversely, White might want to consider new management because it is apparent he has not learned a single (blank) thing since his pro day and there is a major disconnect. At this point the less air time White gets the better unless he happens to save someone's life or pull a cat out of a tree. Otherwise, hide that kid until late Saturday evening. Someone asked that extremely loaded question of White looking for this type of answer and guess what? They go it. White either needed to make no comment; stand by his guy or say they are equally talented. The second sentence starting with a huge BUT destroyed his light fawning comment about Leinhart.

I understand that every minute aspect of a player is analyzed, I just don't think this comment would be something that would make a team pass. You can throw the comment in with some other concerns and in total make a team want to pass, but I don't think the comment on its face is anything to make a big deal over.If you had concerns over White before this comment this doesn't change your mind, and if you based your draft slotting of White based on his past few years of gameday playing in college over these past couple months that have been very poor for White your mind isn't changed either.

Regardless, there are a lot of great stories that will develop on day one of the draft. Where White goes is definitely one of them.

Especially if it's an organization that still remembers Rae Carruth and Fred Lane and tends to value character more than an average team.

I strongly disagree. It might not effect his status at all. But at this time of year teams have first round prospects under a microscope. They are evaluating the prospect in areas far beyond just college stats. Any small character quetion can without a doubt cause players to drop. For example, if the Eagles were a team looking at White, you don't think his comments might raise some red flags? They'd have TO flashbacks just reading the story. It might not cost him anything, but it could cost him a good deal of money.

:lmao: Ricky Manning down?
No, but he is gone.
Yes, he is on the Bears now, but had an incident very similar to the one he was just involved in before when he was with the Panthers as well.Let's try not to hold up any one particular organization as the epitome of character morality.

Possibly.I think we can all agree it doesn't help.

I'm amazed that people actually see this as throwing Leinert under the bus. Heck, I really don't like Young one bit but I still don't see anything wrong with what White said. Boy, I sure hope the other 31 teams let this guy slide to the Steeler. 2 Months ago I would have thought it to be impossible! :excited:
