Leonard Pope (1 Viewer)

I'm just browsing some depth charts and came across Arizona. The group of incoming TE's that involved Vernon Davis, Marcedes Lewis, Leonard Pope, etc was intruiging...with Davis being the obvious. I drafted Lewis because he was ranked the second best in the draft and Davis was already taken.

However, we all know that a player can outperform other players that are ranked higher than them due to the team and system they are on. I'm looking at Pope's situation and can only think of just that.

Leinart has a ton of weapons on that team so that takes away from Pope. But I just can't get over the concept of a 250 lb 6-7 guy in the red zone not getting those passes.

Anyone have information about Pope and how his hands are ,etc? I'm curious. I think he may be a guy that will be picked up alot this year in fantasy football, if not already owned.

Awesome redzone target. I dont imagine him getting lots of yards, but he should be an amazing 3rd down received as well as inside the 20. I dont think he has the ability to be a top 10 TE, but as a TE2 on your roster he could put up 1-2 TDs on any given week ... just not every week

Dear God no.Pope is a horrendous TE2. In a start 2 TE league, he's a decent TE3.Pope has just been mostly awful. 1-2 TDs? He has never scored a TD in the NFL, and he can give you 1-2 TDs any given week? Maybe 1-2 TDs this year. Maybe. And he's not a great RZ target. And he's a poor 3rd down TE.So yeah, not even close.

He has only played one year. I think it's a bit early to toss him aside. Of course he was not good last year. Very few rookie TE's are fantasy viable.

In redraft, no one even has him ranked in the top 25. David/Joe doesn’t even have Pope in the top 50 TEs. Pope is unlikely to even start. His horrendous blocking won't go over well with the new HC/OC. His routes were sloppy last year. He looked painfully slow. He has no chance at getting 2 tds in a game, and very little chance at 1 td. He's a horrible start in any league. If you're starting Pope at TE this year, then your draft went HORRIBLY wrong.

I loved Pope in college, but considering the TEs Georgia produces, he may have gotten drafted on just his size and the school's history producing good TEs (Watson, Wiggins, McMichael). Everything I have heard is that he will be lucky to retain a starting spot. I was really pissed when CHI passed on him but that just shows how little I know compared to the scouts.

There's always a chance things change, but I wouldn't even think about drafting him this year. I actually just cut the guy in favor of Watson from my dynasty squad. Something tells me I'll be able to get him back via the WW.

Nothing is impossible in the NFL (well, almost nothing). But I think there is sound logic in Pope's omission from our Top 25 lists (universally).

*** Pope isn't a fluid route runner, and he tends to catch passes too close to his body

*** Pope, by virtue of his sheer size, should be a good blocker, yet he was a liability last year (when they needed him to block)

*** Even if he improves his blocking, you can be sure that Whisenhunt, Haley and Grimm are going to put a premium on pass protection, meaning Pope and the other TEs aren't going to be sent on receiving routes too often

*** With WRs like the Cardinals have, and an excellent backfield receiving unit, there is little need/chance for Pope to be featured

*** According to some local beat writers, Pope may not even start over Troy Bienemann

*** While the Cardinals aren't going to become Steelers West, you can be sure the team will run more, and pass less...those targets have to come from somewhere

still say he's too stiff. If Patrick can get healthy, I like his chances of eventually passing Pope.
TE is the second hardest position to learn in the NFL. Your an O-Lineman(Some of the Highest Wonderlick scores are from your lineman. Offensive linemen score(24) the highest average, while the lowest scores(16) are submitted by running backs. The closer you are to the ball at the line of scrimmage, the better you score.). O-Line is very difficult to learn and well as being too tall makes leverage difficult.LINK: Wonderlick

Then your a WR; routes, timeing, open field blocking etc. Rookies tend not to make a big splash their first year.

Gates rookie year:

YR TM G TRG REC YD Y/R TD

2003 SD 15 39 24 389 16.2 2

Gonzo

1997 KC 16 33 368 11.2 2

Pope

YR TM G TRG REC YD Y/R TD

2006 ARI 16 23 16 161 10.1 0

I dont know how talented Pope actually is, so maybe he never comes around. You have a team with two stud WR and a good pass catching back (EDGE) so who knows?

Leonard Pope: Front-Runner for Cards' TE Job - 8/6/2007 6:02:24 AM

Update:

Pope has a decent grip on Arizona's No. 1 tight end role, according to the Arizona Republic.

Recommendation:

He's trying to hold off Troy Bienemann for the job. Pope is best known as a pass-catching tight end, while Bienemann is better as a blocker. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt is reportedly unhappy with how all of the Cardinals' tight ends have blocked thus far during training camp. If Pope remains the starter, he will spend most of his time as a blocker. The best-case scenario is if he can develop into a red-zone threat.

In college Pope had surprising skills as a receiver, given his size. He was on my radar last year as a deep sleeper/dynasty pick. I was surprised by how poorly he did.

Right now, unless your redraft has 30 roster spots, he's probably a guy to keep an eye on. If he starts to look good as a starter in the preseason, then maybe he becomes draftable.

1-2 TDs any given week, that still cracks me up. On a TE who's never scored a TD. He was drafted because he went to UGA.

How are those 1-2 TDs any given week working out?OOHHHH SNAP. Did you mean 1-2 catches any given week?Ahhh. You're right on target then. *cough* Bust. *cough*

Well, he's already got 1 td this year. Of course he's only got 4 receptions so he's probably not a good option.

Leonard Pope - TE - Steelers

Steelers signed TE Leonard Pope to a one-year contract.

Wherever Todd Haley lands, Pope is sure to follow. The two have been together in Arizona, Kansas City, and now Pittsburgh.
