Listening to the story - the guy is not too bright. Turned down plea deal of probation - seems like that is a no-brainer when facing mandatory sentencing. I know you think you did not do anything wrong, but sometimes you have to listen to your attorney's objective advice...

And, yes, you've nicely illustrated one of the significant downsides to mandatory sentencing guidelines.

 
We need a John Oliver piece on mandatory sentencing, and while we are at it, the ridiculous drug laws we have in this country.
