Let's look at good landing spots for RBs in 2012 (1 Viewer)

In recent years, it seems as if there have been better landing spots than this year. Here's a list of the current NFL draft order with a quick mention of what I think might be a good spot and what isn't:

2012 NFL Draft Order

1. Indianapolis Colts (2-14) -- Good landing spot, but won't be a 1st round guy

2. St. Louis Rams (2-14) -- Decent landing spot but will sit behind SJax and won't be a 1st round guy unless they trade down

3. Minnesota Vikings (3-13) -- no (AP, Gerhart)

4. Cleveland Browns (4-12) -- Decent landing spot

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-12) -- Decent landing spot

6. Washington Redskins (5-11) -- Not with Shanahan still in town

7. Jacksonville Jaguars (5-11) -- no (MJD)

8. Miami Dolphins (6-10)* -- no (Bush, Thomas)

8. Carolina Panthers (6-10)* -- no (DeAngelo, Stewart)

*Decided by coin flip at NFL combine

10. Buffalo Bills (6-10) -- no (Spiller, FJax)

11. Seattle Seahawks (7-9)** -- no (Lynch)

11. Kansas City Chiefs (7-9)** -- no (Charles)

**Decided by coin flip at NFL combine

13. Arizona Cardinals (8-8) -- no (Beanie, Ryan Williams)

14. Dallas Cowboys (8-8) -- no (DeMarco, Felix)

15. Philadelphia Eagles (8-8) -- no (McCoy)

16. New York Jets (8-8) -- good landing spot

17. Cincinnati Bengals (from Oakland) (8-8) -- decent (Benson, Scott)

18. San Diego Chargers (8-8) -- no (Mathews)

19. Chicago Bears (8-8) -- no (Forte)

20. Tennessee Titans (9-7) -- no (CJ3)

21. Cincinnati Bengals (9-7) -- decent (Benson, Scott)

22. Cleveland Browns (from Atlanta Falcons) (10-6) -- Decent landing spot

23. Detroit Lions (10-6) -- no (Best, LeShoure, Smith)

24. Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4) -- possibly but not great (Mendenhall, Redman)

25. Denver Broncos (8-8) -- could be very good

26. New York Giants (9-7) no (Bradshaw, Jacobs)

27. Houston Texans (10-6) -- no (Foster)

28. San Francisco 49ers (13-3) -- no (Gore, Hunter)

29. Baltimore Ravens (12-4) -- no (Rice)

30. New England Patriots (from New Orleans) -- no (RBBC, lots of guys)

31. New England Patriots (13-3) -- no (RBBC, lots of guys)

32. Green Bay Packers (15-1) -- decent (Grant, Starks)

While there seems to be a moderate number of spots, none of them jump out as clear good spots to land. I actually think Denver might be the best spot overall followed by the NYJ. Aside from that, there's going to be very little opportunity for almost all the rookie RBs to make an impact in 2012 barring injury.

RBs are dropping lower and lower on the food chain of NFL teams.

The NFL is now a full fledged passing league. All the rules favor the QBs and WRs..the short pass is more effective than the run. Teams can get by and win with middle rd and FA RBs.

I'm starting to eye up that Jets spot as a potential spot for Richardson. After that Cleveland at #22 or Denver at #25.

I think at some point it may change however(or I hope someone attempts this). Think how cheaply you could obtain 2 or 3 good to great RB's. Get a good run blocking OL and you have the Carolina Panthers from a few years back. It would be a way to fight against the high flying teams if you don't have a franchise QB.

In recent years, it seems as if there have been better landing spots than this year. Here's a list of the current NFL draft order with a quick mention of what I think might be a good spot and what isn't:

2012 NFL Draft Order

1. Indianapolis Colts (2-14) -- Good landing spot, but won't be a 1st round guy - Brown looked decent this year and they also have Carter who is ok if he can ever quit fumbling.

2. St. Louis Rams (2-14) -- Decent landing spot but will sit behind SJax and won't be a 1st round guy unless they trade down - I agree

3. Minnesota Vikings (3-13) -- no (AP, Gerhart) - They will sign someone or draft one in the middle rounds.

4. Cleveland Browns (4-12) -- Decent landing spot - I agree.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-12) -- Decent landing spot - Looking at Richardson in the 1st round.

6. Washington Redskins (5-11) -- Not with Shanahan still in town - Why won't this guy retire already?

7. Jacksonville Jaguars (5-11) -- no (MJD) - I disagree. MJD still has bone on bone knee issues and Jennings is coming off an injury and Karim sucks.

8. Miami Dolphins (6-10)* -- no (Bush, Thomas) - I agree.

8. Carolina Panthers (6-10)* -- no (DeAngelo, Stewart) - I agree.

*Decided by coin flip at NFL combine

10. Buffalo Bills (6-10) -- no (Spiller, FJax) - I disagree. FJax may not be the same and they may want someone better than what they have to pair with Spiller. Johnny White is interesting, but he may not be what they want.

11. Seattle Seahawks (7-9)** -- no (Lynch) - This time last year Lynch was a bum. Yes, they need to add depth for sure.

11. Kansas City Chiefs (7-9)** -- no (Charles) - Really? He's coming off a majory injury and Thomas is done and Battle sucks.

**Decided by coin flip at NFL combine

13. Arizona Cardinals (8-8) -- no (Beanie, Ryan Williams) - I agree providing Williams makes a full comeback.

14. Dallas Cowboys (8-8) -- no (DeMarco, Felix) - I agree.

15. Philadelphia Eagles (8-8) -- no (McCoy) - They could use some depth if Lewis isn't the answer. I happen to like him however.

16. New York Jets (8-8) -- good landing spot - I agree.

17. Cincinnati Bengals (from Oakland) (8-8) -- decent (Benson, Scott) - I agree.

18. San Diego Chargers (8-8) -- no (Mathews) - I agree, but only if Tolbert stays.

19. Chicago Bears (8-8) -- no (Forte) - I agree. Bell looked decent as a backup too.

20. Tennessee Titans (9-7) -- no (CJ3) - I agree. They also have Ringer and Harper.

23. Detroit Lions (10-6) -- no (Best, LeShoure, Smith) - I agree only if Best is ok and LeShoure is at least serviceable.

24. Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4) -- possibly but not great (Mendenhall, Redman) - I agree.

25. Denver Broncos (8-8) -- could be very good - Yep, they need someone.

26. New York Giants (9-7) no (Bradshaw, Jacobs) - I also like D Scott.

27. Houston Texans (10-6) -- no (Foster) - I agree and they also have Tate.

28. San Francisco 49ers (13-3) -- no (Gore, Hunter) - I love Hunter.

29. Baltimore Ravens (12-4) -- no (Rice) - They could certainly use some depth. What they have on their bench is terrible.

30. New England Patriots (from New Orleans) -- no (RBBC, lots of guys) - They have a whole lot of nothing IMO.

32. Green Bay Packers (15-1) -- decent (Grant, Starks) - They could use some better talent at the position.

You're mistaking what I said with what teams might do. I'm not saying some of those teams you marked as red wont' take a RB. I'm saying they are not good landing spots for the near future. For example, MJD may have those issues, but if Jax drafts a RB relatively high, that MJD will still get the majority of the carries for at least the next 1-2 years. Same goes with Lynch in Seattle and remember he's only 25. Same with Charles in KC. At best, guys coming in there would be in a timeshare. For fantasy purposes, which is what this is about, those would not be a good landing spot for a good RB prospect if you're hoping he pays dividends in 2012 or even 2013.

I can't imagine a better spot than Cincy. They have two 1st round picks, the competition isn't strong, and you have a coach that has a history of being anti-RBBC.

A quick Google search on average wages gave me this.

Rank - Position - Yearly Wages1. Quarterback 1,970,982 2. Defensiv End 1,583,784 3. Offensive Line 1,267,402 4. Defensive Tackle 1,223,925 5. Cornerback 1,193,666 6. Linebacker 1,175,788 7. Wide Receiveer 1,054,437 8. Running Back 957,360 9. Safety 947,847 10. Punter / Kicker 868,005 11. Tight End 863,414
There's the unquestioned, most important position at QB. That's followed by the guys who are either trying to get to the QB or defend him. RB is not that important. The Browns and Bucs look like good landing spots for a RB in the top 5, but by taking a RB there they will be passing on guys who are probably more important to building a successful team (at least that's what the money trail tells us). The Browns and Bucs have so many issues, I just don't see it. I seriously believe that we see the 1st rb off the board (Richardson) after the top 10 picks. Maybe KC but I'd think otherwise the Jets would be very interested. Also, is this just an extension of other Trent Richardson threads? No one cares or is talking about the others but just wants to figure out where Richardson will land.....right?

Why are the NYJ's a good landing spot?

Shonn Greene is what he is, I understand that. But he still averaged 4.2 YPC and had 30 receptions.

Joe McKnight is a better NFL RB than I thought and only completed his 2nd season.

Bilal Powell is a RB I like that didn't get much of a look at all and was a 4th round pick.

The Jets have a bigger holes than RB. I wouldn't think it would be addressed until the middle rounds, which is where they drafted McKnight and Powell.

If Richardson somehow falls there, I couldn't imagine them passing it up. They haven't had a top tier talent at RB in a very long time. When your philosophy is based on running the ball and playing good defense, having a lot of mediocre talent at RB will only get you so far. They may have finally realized that this year.Either way, there's little competition ahead of a RB coming in. Greene is far from establishing himself as the clear starter after a few years. That's why it's potentially a good spot.

I'll give ya that, I just don't think Richardson could fall that far. They wouldn't take RB2 in the first, maybe the second round. Would Wilson/Polk/Martin/Miller be a big upgrade?

Again, it's not a question of whether or not those guys are a big upgrade. It's a matter of it being a good spot for a potential RB.Richardson is not the only capable RB in the draft even though he's by far the best. There will eventually be some good RBs that come out of this class. If there is a guy you particularly like and think has potential and he ends up landing in NY, you have to be pretty happy about it. That guy will have little competition to eventually take over the starting job and will be playing on a team that is committed to the run. What's not to like? Their O-line isn't as elite as it was, but it's still one of the better ones in the league. And if the guy you like is as talented as you think, there's very little standing in his way to eventually take the job and run. That's not the case in a lot of other places. This is NOT saying that whoever they get will work and will be the starter. But if they do a good job in identifying a talented RB in the 2nd or 3rd round, that guy won't be buried by situation for long.

I could absolutely see Richardson falling that far. I really see Richardson going in the 15-25 range to one of the teams in those slots or a team trading in there to pick him up.

To each his own as I guess we'll agree to disagree.

Does anyone know how involved Sporano was in getting Reggie Bush to the next level? As he's now the OC in NYJ, I'm wondering if he can get McKnight to that level. If so, fantastic buy low in most formats.

Trent aint falling that far. I dont think he falls out of the top 10, but if he does, teams will be trading up to 11 or 12 to get him, not hoping he falls to them.

what's the pay scale these days? with the lower salaries the teams may want the max discount and reach for the expensive positions early (QB, DE) if enough opportunity is there. Not sure that we have sufficient data to extrapolate from the one draft that used the new pay scale but my impression was that QBs were picked earlier than usual in the 1st (four in the first 12) and the first RB only at 28. also gone were 9 DL and 6 OL before the first RB.

We may be kidding ourselves that RBs other than Richardson will be picked in the first at all.

Edited for spelling

I wonder if we will see more active trading this year because rookie contracts are so much more manageable now? We could potentially see a contender swoop in and grab him if they're a relatively solid team and think a guy like Richardson could put them over. Pittsburgh? Denver? Detroit? NYG? NE? GB? It could happen.

Atlanta is not on your list because they don't have a 1st round pick, but that would be a good landing spot for a RB. Turner is starting to show his age and won't be around much longer.

He finshed as a top 5 RB this year. I realize he turns 30 in a month, but he's only been a starting RB for 4 years. He had only ~225 carries over his first 4 years in SD. I thought he was a value this year, and he probably will be again in 2012 if people are scared of him turning 30.

That was the one that I think is the #1 spot. Benson is just about finished and Scott is getting up there too and he'll never be the #1 guy. The 'o' could really use a new guy.ATL too.

His end of year stats looked good but aside from the TB game, he finished poorly. He didn't look like he did a few years ago and looked slow when I saw him. His carries have also dropped form 23+ per game in 2008, to around 20 in 2010, to 18+ this past year. He seems like a guy ready to fall of a cliff in terms of effectiveness and production.

I dont think he's going to fall off a cliff but we've likely seen his best years. In his early rankings, Bloom has Turner as RB26 (and Gore RB27). I highly doubt they end up getting drafted that low, but both will likely be nice 3rd round values.

I could see a guy having to sit a year but no more than that.

NYG could be another good spot. Jacobs wasn't spectacular and is due 4.9 millions. If Bradshaw's foot problems recur, A rookie might only have to beat out Scott to be in position .to take over

As a Giants fan, I would be disappointed if they didn't bring someone in. Jacobs is on the downside and Bradshaw is injury-prone.

I think Da'Rel Scott has a lot of upside (I hate that phrase).

Would LOVE to see Hillis somehow get picked up by Detroit as I think he would thrive there. Of course, there is the question of what to do with Leshure. As a former Best owner I think Best would be a spectacular COP/3rd down back and would limit his exposure to concussions. Like most others I just don't see him as a bell cow.

Well, the thread is titled best landing spot for 2012If youre thinking dynasty, then ATL would be a real nice spot at this point.

Here are the spots I like for potential rookie RBs this years.

1. Indianapolis Colts (2-14) - Indy won't be taking a RB at 1.1 but they could have their #2 or #3 RB on the draft board available at 2.1 and this is a decent spot.

4. Cleveland Browns (4-12) & 22. Cleveland Browns (from Atlanta Falcons) (10-6)- Like Indy, Clev will no way take a RB this high in the draft. Their 2nd round pick however could still land them the #3 or #4 overall RB, let alone their 2nd pick in the 1st. Clev has a solid run blocking unit up front but needs playmakers on the edge and needs to upgrade QB. It's a strong place for RB production IMO though.

6. Washington Redskins (5-11) - I'm sure nobody wants a RB to go here because of Shanny's reputation. I can't argue with that. I think there are at least 3 RBs in the draft who would be significant upgrades to the talent Wash has right now and Shanny would stick with that guy if the talent gap was large enough. Shanny know how to run the ball.

11. Kansas City Chiefs (7-9) - Not crazy about this spot because of Charles but I do think there would be touches to go around.

16. New York Jets (8-8) - One of my favorite spots. Greene isn't the answer and NYJ need a playmaker at RB. NYJ have a good enough Oline to run the ball but Sanchez hurts a little bit.

17. Cincinnati Bengals (from Oakland) (8-8) & 21. Cincinnati Bengals (9-7) - This is my favorite landing spot of all I think. Benson won't be around much longer and this team has the pieces of a young offense becoming great. Solid young QB in Dalton. Solid young TE in Gresham. Elite young WR in Green. The Oline is pretty solid as well. Seeing that Benson was able to put up decent numbers in the offense, I think a younger RB with less wear and more talent would thrive.

23. Detroit Lions (10-6) - I think Det will look to FA to fill but Best needs a compliment runner. I'm not sure about Leshore coming back or not.

24. Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4) - As a Steeler fan, I'd love for them to take one of the top RBs at this spot. Mendy will be on the mend early and Redman is just OK. I'm not sure how much longer Mendy will be effective and the position could use upgrading.

]25. Denver Broncos (8-8) - I don't love this spot but I don't hate it. Mostly I'm intrigued by it. McGahee put up nice numbers in this offense and one has to believe he is at the tail end of his career so a younger RB with ability could do more.

26. New York Giants (9-7) - Sure NYG has some capable RBs on the roster but Jacobs could be gone and Bradshaw has never stayed healthy.

Cincy seems to be the best spot and chance to occur. Cleveland is not bad either. Jets if they make the rookie the bell cow but if not Richardso, than will you be disappointed like Powell this year for those owners.

Seattl;e is still on my favorite list. Let Lynch walk and bring in Richardson instead. I think a rookie can do well here if they decide not to resign Lynch.
