Let's talk about Clinton Portis (1 Viewer)

First, everyone here will likely agree the Skins are one of the biggest train wrecks in the NFL right now. The offense is going to remain putrid for the rest of the season, because of the depleted line, poor QB play, and horrific play calling. What I really want to talk or debate is Portis' outlook for 2010 and beyond. I've noticed is that a lot of people talk as if Portis is done. Is this really the case though? Guy just turned 28, and has never had any major injuries, especially with his legs or knees. He still runs hard, he still has good speed (nice 70+ yard run last week) and still loves this game. Is Portis becoming a great buy low for 2010? Is it not conceivable that the Skins become a MUCH better offense next year with a new coach, GM, and hopefully improved o-line? Or is Portis a possible trade candidate with an upcoming cap free season? Buy low, sell, or hold, what you say shark pool?

Unless next year is uncapped, Portis is going to be with the Redskins which means he's playing on a team rebuilding its line, with a QB not currently on its roster, with a new head coach and OC, and likely a new offensive system. I'm not getting the warm fuzzies for Portis with that scenario.

but isn't in likely next year IS uncapped? And the way I look at the Skins offense, it can ONLY go one direction. Can't get any worse...

Portis has been productive no matter how good or bad the team around him or line blocking for him has been. He's no longer in his prime and has a lot of mileage but he's still capable of producing as a great RB2 if the team as a whole would step it up significantly. But that's a big if right now. As for next year I'd say he's a solid RB3 with RB2 upside depending on o-line play regardless of where he's playing. I have him as my RB2 in redraft right now and I just got him in a dynasty league trade for F.Taylor and L.Maroney about 2 weeks ago (right before Taylor got hurt)(he's my RB4 in that league behind AP,MJD,Benson)

He's definitely lost at least a step. That 70+ yard run against the Chiefs was a bit of an anomolie, because it's his longest run since he came to the Redskins. He can't get wide easily anymore and there have been a cople of 10 yeard runs where he was one step from breaking it big, but didn't.

I'd be VERY wary of him going forward. I see a lot of Stephen Davis in him, and when SD went south, it went south in a big hurry. If he were'nt Danny Snyder's boy, we'd have a couple of young RBs pushing him for playing time, but we don't so as was said up-thread, he'll get his touches next year, but be careful.
