Let's Talk Penn State Football (2 Viewers)

My goodness… I have been reading this 247sports message board thread about Franklin for several days.  A lot of junk to wade through, but a lot of interesting rumors and perspectives as well.  Well, I’ve kind of been resigned to the idea that Franklin will be back next year and that this whole thing is a negotiation ploy like I posted earlier.  I also feel like there is no way to tell what, if anything, is going to happen so I planned to just… wait.  Then, I saw this article posted today:

James Franklin, Penn State could 'Mutually Part Ways'

The rumors of Rhule wanting to come to PSU are pretty hot.  The rumors I’ve read is that, if Franklin left and PSU had to hire a coach, first choice would be Rhule and second would be Matt Campbell at Iowa State.  And they think they could get one of these two.

Interesting week.

Clifford back next year as a bridge/mentor to the young QBs.

Diaz a big name at DC to replace Pry.

Will be interesting to see who sticks on early signing day next week, what other coaches leave/get reassigned (looking at you, Howle and Trautwein), and who comes and goes in the portal between now and spring practice.

Diaz should help with recruitment in South Florida. His coaching had mixed results.  Giving up 200+ yards rushing to Michael Carter and J Williams in 2020 was a low point.

ESPN/ABC announced their prime time games for 2022 and Ohio State Whiteout game is NOT on it. Word is FOX will make it a Big Noon game.

Season kicks off tonight.

Between 2016-2019, the team went 42-11 with 3 top-10 finishes. One of the winningest 4-year stretches in team history.

Over the last two seasons, 11-11 with head-scratching losses to Maryland, Illinois, and Nebraska. Worst two-season stretch since 2003-2004 dark years.

What are we expecting this year?

Oh boy Clifford just walked back to the dressing room after coming out for half. Hopefully he just forgot something.

That was a quality win. It should put Penn State back in the top 25. The pick 6 was awful, but Clifford had a lot of great throws. A few bad drops by wrs hurt his numbers a bit. I know they wanted to establish the run, but they ran on 1st down waaaaaay too often. They should open this offense up and let the old man sling it.

Just got back from game. Great time and great performance.

Hats off to Auburn fans. Every one of them we met was really nice.

Well, that was not a fun game to sit through yesterday. But I guess a bad win Is better than a good loss.

Clifford was not good even taking the poor conditions into account. Disappointed and frustrated that they didn’t try Allar for at least a series or two since Cliff just didn’t have it yesterday.

Defense & special teams generally playing well (other than inconsistent FG unit), but lots to work on on offense during the bye. Auburn seems a distant memory already after sleepwalking through the past two games.

Next 3 games defines the season. Glad we got a bye before them. 2-1, we have a shot at the playoff. 1-2, no playoff but decent bowl maybe. 0-3 same as last year. 3-0, playoff is in sight which means we'll lose to Illinois again.

9-3 with a mediocre bowl. Rinse and repeat. OSU is gonna destroy them, thinking 55-1.

If PSU is OK with that in giving Franklin the extension, then I guess I should just learn to deal with it instead of getting my hopes up.

Michigan fan here. Is PSU going to make a QB switch and start Allar over Clifford at some point this year? He just looks like he's got "it". Kind of like JJ McCarthy over Cade McNamera for Michigan.

Outgoing AD and President gives head football coach a 10-year contract. I think you're right, PSU doesn't give a ****. I don't think I should either.

Now if Rhule were to somehow make it back to the valley....

I faded away from PSU a couple of years ago. Pretty sure I compla about James last season and the season before. It’s painfully obvious that James is a decent coach but not the great coach needed to compete with the big boys of the big 10. I catch a score every few weeks week but haven’t even watched a minute of a game this year. I used to watch PSU games most weeks for decades. I don’t see the point any longer.

Time for Clifford to step aside and let Allar take over at QB. Thanks Clifford for all of the effort over the years. Franklin, make the move.

every season its the same thing.. start off hot beating the bad teams, then when we play the OSUs, Michigan's we poop the bed.. i feel like I am watching reruns of Gilligan's Island hoping that THIS time they will get off the island. but it never happens..

I am so incredibly torn about how I feel about the team, Franklin, the QB situation… really everything this year. On one hand, I am frustrated… on the other I wonder if the path the team is taking is right way to go. In past posts I’ve made in this thread, I have been on both sides of coin on several topics. Should someone label me a hypocrite I could not defend it. I can’t even make up my mind now.

The frustrated me: why is Clifford our QB? Tommy Stevens could have been named our QB but Franklin left the position up for competition and Stevens transferred. So we end up with Clifford and Levis. Clifford wins the job, but it’s a close competition. Clifford comes out and plays… meh. Anyone that sees Levis can tell he is a physical beast and has a cannon. PSU never really gives him a legit shot to start and when they do start him they use him as a battering ram up the middle so he transfers. We end up with Clifford…yay. I think it’s possible Stevens could have been a better option compared to Clifford and I wanted to see Levis take over the starting spot when he was still here. Now Levis is being talked about as the top 2 or 3 prospects in the NFL draft while I honestly don’t think anyone is even going to take a ‘flyer’ on Clifford. So Franklin being ridiculously loyal to Clifford potentially cost us from having a guy with top 3 NFL draft talent. Then they ask Clifford to come back for his final year of eligibility??? Why??? I was so frustrated. I mean, this guy is not getting better. And again, we are potentially NOT playing a top NFL prospect of Drew Allar because we are rolling with the Big Red Dog. Crazy. But hey, that’s where we are as a team.

I keep wondering why? Why? Why? Why? Why so loyal to this QB? I think it’s great that he works so hard, and he is such a ‘leader’. Great! I don’t think it’s great that he doesn’t beat good teams, and sometimes looses to bad ones. And throws a lot of pics.

The cautiously optimistic me: We dealt with some weird stuff over the past few years. I feel like Franklin took COVID precautions extremely serious due to his family situation while a lot of other schools maybe weren’t as strict with practices. I think our COVID years were a mess, and that may have been a factor. We also dealt with Moorehead leaving, Ciarrocca for 1 year, then a switch to Yurchich. And the team did not look great during this time period, but is it fair to put all of that on the QB? Probably not. So let’s take a non-emotional assessment of how this year could end up.

There is a chance that PSU will beat every team we are supposed to beat. And you might even say that having an experienced QB plays a factor in this. That will be an improvement over years past. There was ALWAYS a game where PSU had a let down against a team they are supposed to beat. And that could still happen, but If PSU avoids it this year, that is a big accomplishment. If the only games they lose are Michigan and OSU those are teams ranked above PSU and contenders for the NCAA championship. It means we are knocking on the door. It means 10 wins, which is great.

I absolutely hate the “wait till next year” fans, but I can’t help thinking that way. There is no possible way Clifford will be back and playing on the field next year. I am so incredibly excited about this single fact. It appears that Drew Aller has the job unless something unexpected happens. Since PSU was able to get some good leads in games, Aller is getting significant reps this year. He may even get a few starts?

So next year… yeah, I’m that guy now. We could be going into next year with a top future NFL prospect behind center playing for a team that only lost to the top 2 teams in the Big10 the prior year. It’s been ugly at times, but that is a much better place than a lot of Big 10 teams are in right now. PSU also has 2 legit top NFL prospects at RB as well. And I haven’t even mentioned defense, because for the most part they have been solid. I think they got run off the field at Michigan because they were literally on the field so long they finally just got worn out and broke down. But they have played well and are only getting better all year. Abdul Carter… wow. So yeah, I just don’t know how to feel really. It’s like, I’m incredibly irritated about the past, someone neutral about the present, and excited about the future. And I absolutely can’t wait to see Drew Aller in 2023!

The key to getting where we want to be is beating the teams we aren't supposed to beat (the ones with equal or better talent than us).

Other than a fluke blocked field goal six years ago, that's one thing Franklin PSU teams have consistently not demonstrated.

Wake me up when that starts happening. Until then it's a cruel annual repeat of Lucy, Charlie Brown, and the football.

Penn State probably finishes 10-2 this year and are clearly a top 10 team. Unfortunately they will never get anywhere until they are a top 3 team. They can't beat OSU and Michigan caught back up to them.

Maybe when they expand the playoffs.

Even the year of the fluke blocked field goal, PSU lost to Pitt. A team they were supposed to beat. I don't disagree with what you are saying... I'm simply looking for a silver lining. It could be the first time in the Franklin era they beat all the teams they are supposed to beat. It could be a "walk before you run" building block with a game changing QB taking over next year.

2017 - loss to Sparty
2018 - lost to unranked Sparty
2019 - lost to the Golden Gophers
2020 - Indiana, MD, Nebraska, Iowa
2021 - Iowa, Illinois, Sparty

Or maybe... Drew Aller + 2 stud RB's and some freaks on defense.
