Allright… so… I kind of had a different reaction to this whole game. One of the things I was thinking after the game is “let the Tommy Stevens era begin”. Now, I know it won’t really be an era because he only has 1 year of eligibility left (I think?) but I am excited to see what he, or any of the other QB’s on the roster, can do moving forward. I think the team will get better.
So Trace McSorley… he is a gamer. He is gritty. He is tough. He wins. But I swear, I just don’t think he is a good thrower. When the ball comes out of his hands it always kind of seems like a properly placed, and properly timed ‘floater’ of some sort. I often wince when the ball comes out of his hands. I always worry it is going to be picked off. It’s not like a bullet arm. Trace ranks extremely high in leadership, toughness, decision making, and running. I think he ranks average in throwing. I want to see the offense run by someone that can throw better. And I realize maybe Tommy Stevens might not throw a whole lot better compared to Trace, but he is bigger at 6’ 5” compare to Trace at 6’ even.
So here’s the way I see it. Trace McSorley just took PSU to the highest level that he can. He beat OSU 1 time, and lost 2 other times. Extremely close to having a chance at a national title, but not quite there. Which is amazing in my mind, because when you think about it Trace was recruited by most schools as a safety. It was James Franklin at Vanderbilt that recruited him as a QB. It was Franklin that brought him along to PSU as a QB. The pair have done amazing things together for this program taking them through the final years of difficult sanctions. McSorley won many games with PSU practically with sheer will, but hasn’t really won with his arm.
Franklin has recruited multiple QB’s that were rated much higher than McSorley since he has been HC. It’s obvious that Franklin has no problem playing a freshman if he feels they are ready. So why not move on to a new QB after giving Trace a year or two? I think it’s because he knows that he owes Trace for coming to PSU and helping take the program to amazing new levels. I look at it as loyalty. And that is why I still like Franklin despite some questionable calls.
So… I think Franklin is awesome, I think McSorley is awesome, and I think the program reached its full potential with McSorley at the helm. At the same time, I think McSorley is somewhat limited with his skill set. I want to see a QB that is 6’5”, can see over defenders, can throw over defenders, and can deliver a strong accurate throw to a 6’ 5” WR like Juwan Johnson. Hopefully Johnson can catch it… but that’s a whole other story.
I absolutely love the McSorley era. It is, and has been a wild ride, and someday I will miss it. At the same time, I am just as excited to see the next chapter in PSU football. There is news that PSU just landed two 4 start QB recruits in the 2019 class. Anyone ever think that was possible 5 years ago? This Saturday night may have been difficult to process… but I can’t wait to see what the future holds.
