If forced into the choice, which would you go with... life imprisonment at hard labor in federal pound-you-in-the-### prison... or a DIrty Dozen style mission with low chance of survival?

Let's say 10% chance of surviving the mission and walking away as a free man.

Shooting the major in the back option... similar 10% survival rate (likely captured by enemy and tortured to death if your teammates don't kill you in the act) and you will still be a wanted fugitive if you survive.
