Liklihood of Bryan Calhoun being the man in '07 (1 Viewer)

With KJ supposedly out for next season, it is possible that Bryan Calhoun will get his shot, if he can heal quickly from his knee injury. What is the likelihood that he starts next season of Calhoun putting up good numbers in Detroit amidst variables such as:

A) possibility that Detroit drafts RB

B) Calhoun may not be ready to play himself

C) possibility that Detroit trades for or picks up a veteran RB

D) possibility that a current Detroit RB carries the load

I say 50/50.

15% chance of being the man in DET next year. Calhoun was a long-shot BEFORE tearing-up his knee.

3rd rd. pick last year / 74th overall.....I think DET had him penciled in as more than a long shot.DET has too many other holes to draft a RB in the 1st rd and a trade is very unlikely. I think the only way Calhoun doesn't get alot of work is if he is slow to recover or DET signs a FA. 60/40 he will play.

You pose an excellent question. If Kevin is on the way to full rehabilitation and they know he'll be available in 2008, I could see Detroit giving Brian the job of primary ball carrier in 2007. What I don't see them doing is breaking the bank for a free agent or using a high draft pick on an RB if they are confident Jones will come back strong.

Another possible scenario I could see playing out here is for Detroit to sign Marshall Faulk for the interim period if the Rams don't want him back. I imagine Martz would prefer Faulk over Calhoun and I could see this happening if Detroit thinks Faulk has one more year in his body. They then back him up with Calhoun.

last I heard there was a chance he wouldn't be ready, not likely.Where did you hear likely out?

A 3rd-rounder means squat. Of the Top-30 rushers this past season, only six (Gore, Rudi, Ahman, Parker, Westbrook and Taylor) were non 1st or 2nd-round picks. More alarming, only Gore and Ahman have returned from major knee injuries. This is obviously a small sample size of only one year, but top RB's are notoriously of higher pedigree than 3rd-rounders.6 / 30 = 20%2 / 30 = 6%I was feeling kind when I gave Calhoun a 15% shot at being the man in DET next year. I can see Calhoun returning kicks and maybe a 3rd-down change-of-pace back, but nothing more in '07.

As a Calhoun/KJ owner, nothing would please me more. Additionally, I don't get the negativity on Calhoun. He has proven to be a durable (in the sense that he was used extensively in college) and explosive back who has excellent hands and recieving ability. Mark my words, if he gets a shot, he will surprise alot of owners.

to further support the bolded statement - a 10year span instead of one season... see the RB matrix...freelance article

IMO, the Lions won't draft a RB unless they have good reason to believe Kevin Jones' career will be threatened by this injury. They have two young, solid backs that they like for the future. What they're missing is a RB who is certain to play next season. That's a slam dunk for a FA signing.

Although Millen is still running the show...

Whether they draft or trade, the likelihood of the Lions acquiring a serviceable RB this offseason is quite high, considering the fact that neither Calhoun nor Jones can promise to be ready by week 1. Let's not forget, there is lots of pressure on the current coaching staff to turn things around in the Motor City, so that they will be more likely to crowd their backfield than work to clear the way for Jones/Calhoun to regain their spot once healthy.

I still maintain that the most likely situation is a minimum-salary veteran FA signing. The Lions have way too many holes to consider using a day one draft pick on the RB position when they're already set for the future. Using a 2nd day pick wouldn't make any sense because it wouldn't be reasonable to expect a 4th-7th round pick to be ready to carry the load (including receiving and blocking), especially in that offensive system.ETA: Also, isn't Marinelli a defensive-minded coach?

I didn't see a reply to the Q, why is Kevin Jones out for all of 07?
As far as I've heard, his injury normally takes more than a full year to heal. Some, such as Westbrook, have had more mild forms of the lisfranc, but KJ's required surgery and was rated as the most significant. Sorry no link.

From what I read he's gone for a portion of the 2007 season due to injury. Until then Brian Calhoun should be the man unless they bring in someone else.

I am a Wisconsin alum, and am a big fan of Calhoun's. I was disappointed when he was put on IR, as I was excited to see what he could do if given a chance in the Detroit offense.

I'll be watching to see how Calhoun's recovery goes...hopefully he doesn't suffer any longterm ramifications from the injury, and is able to come back full speed, full strength, relatively quickly.
