**Lions at Bears** (+6.5, 48) 1pm (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
12-2 Detroit, currently the #1 seed in the NFC, tries to avoid their first losing streak since Week 8 in 2022. 21 players on IR, 16 from the defense.

4-10 Bears, once 4-2 going into their bye, have lost 8 straight games. Since Week 7 their defense ranks 30th-32nd in virtually [every] meaningful efficiency statistic.

If the Lions win out, they will be the #1 seed.

Chicago is playing for pride & knowing this tape will be used by Ryan Poles & the next HC to make offseason decisions.

Temperature should be around 30 at kickoff and may warm slightly, wind ~ 10 mph, no precipitation in the forecast.

Good luck waking the Bears from hibernation. Lions in a chuckle, not a laugher. With the injuries on the Lions side I see it closer than a bye week but not a challenge for the Knee Cappers.

Cappers 32
Knee less 21

One thing to watch is Goff has had some bad games playing in Chicago. If the Bears can’t score against this D, they may have to clean house. I’m afraid that they may have packed it in for the season. It’s eerily to the season when they quit on Ditka’s after he said in Washington that they may not win another game.

I think The Lions reset and take this one
Bears may score some on a battered defense
But even though it's an outdoor game
I think Goff and company do quite well
Gibbs will get a few more touches
Goff will throw a few more passes
And all will be well in Lion Land
I'll say...

Motown- 33
Windy City- 23

In general, the Lions have had more trouble with Chicago than the other two division rivals during the Dan Campbell era. Which is kind of weird, since, no offense, Chicago has been the weakest of the other three NFC franchises the last four years.

Detroit 2021-24 against the NFC North:
  • Chicago 4-3 | 0-2, 2-0, 1-1, 1-0
  • Green Bay 6-2 | 1-1, 2-0, 1-1, 2-0
  • Minnesota 5-2 | 1-1, 1-1, 2-0, 1-0
15-7 is one of the best 4-year divisional records I can recall (need to confirm.) Since the magical run began Week 8 2022, Detroit is 13-2 versus the NFC North. A win Sunday would tie their 2022-23 streak of 7 straight wins against the North.

I'm reminded me of Mike Peplowski being asked in the pre-draft process 30+ years ago: "Mike, you had some monster games against your toughest opponents: Indiana, Michigan, Ohio State. Really impressive tape. Why do you suppose you struggled against Northwestern and other weaker teams?" Kind of speaks to what can happen to any athlete; it's human nature to let down (or not be as fired up) against teams you should beat.

That should not be an issue this week, but we'll see how they respond. Dan Campbell had some epic speeches (as did AG) in media appearances this week. Usually the offensive line has responded from meh games to dominate the next one. Without question, the offense is going to have to carry them the next three weeks if they're going to capture the #1 seed.

It's all right there in front of them, all the regular season goals they set long ago. Win, win, win...rest. They've had 7 winning streaks of 3 games or more in the last 26 months. Just need one more to cap their best season ever.

I keep reading of the W-L records for these clubs and ...ya know it's a great rivalry when fans are counting.

I think this week the injuries won't matter too much. The Lions are amidst an impressive run, an excellent run, and people suddenly are doubting them? They didn't need any extra fuel to win but that's like putting rocket fuel in a Ferrari. I'm super confident in them this week.

Next week, maybe the injuries sting.

I don't think they lose but-
Maybe they lose and this fuels them the rest of the year and the playoffs? I definitely see fuel here one way or another.

All our not good teams that we're fans of- we don't have depth like the Lions. I wonder if some of us are forgetting that as we try to associate here. They have been signing names like Brady's Patriots- for cheap and sometimes onto the PS even.

Reynolds has stepped up every time I've paid attention and been gold for me in FF. Granted he hasn't gotten much starting work but he's done it. ARSB hasn't been awesome this year. He's still a gem but his stats are less. In steps Tim Patrick the last couple of weeks. And truthfully I didn't even like that guy for FF in Denver but he looks darn good in Detroit.

Pat Kirwan yesterday went thru the defensive replacements. Some are old, some are castoffs, some were looking for a chance...they've all been chomping at the bit to play

The Lions gotta coach better. IDC about Campbell's questionable decisions. I think anyone can get up to play for a guy with that much moxie. I mean all the subs gotta be ready to rock. I think they will be. I think you'll see why Campbell has such a great staff.

Next week and playoffs...idk we'll deal with that then, but whew does this look like a rough day for the Bears. People will regret doubting the Lions this week

Looking like Detroit will dress 4 RBs Sunday.

Jermar Jefferson in line for his first snaps in 3 years. HC, OC, AHC/RB assistant, and QB all brought him up first when asked about replacing Montgomery.

S Ifeatu Melifonwu has been activated off IR and will make his season debut. Last season he had a phenomenal 2nd half, logging the 8th highest PFF Grade (85.6) among 101 qualifying S.

The Lions opted not to elevate Jamal Adams for a 3rd straight week. Along with S Brandon Joseph being waived and STer Loren Strickland being elevated, seems like the Lions are comfortable Brian Branch will see his normal snap count. Iffy will be the 3rd S. He could also play SS if BB goes to the Slot and Amik Roberson plays outside corner.

But to start the game, I expect AG to roll out former Bear Kindle Vildor alongside Terrion Arnold at CB.

This is the Super Bowl for the Bears, especially after how the Thanksgiving game ended. I think they show up big in this one against an extremely banged up Lions team.

For the Lions, I think this sets up as a really nice Sam LaPorta week. Lions defense and loss of Monty likely makes them more pass heavy and LaPorta feels like the biggest beneficiary to me. I also think Tim Patrick has worked his way into flex consideration. ARSB/Gibbs should get theirs, but I think JaMo might be more of the odd man out, as its felt a bit since Patrick started getting going.

I think this could be a really nice game for DJ Moore and Rome Odunze. Terrion Arnold and Kindle Vildor aren't gonna be able to cover them, its just of matter of Caleb hitting them. Allen draws the tougher matchup with likely a lot of Branch inside.

I'm calling for the upset here.
Bears-24
Lions-21

During their 8 game slide, the Bears have been outscored 118-207.

In the first half of the last 8 games, the Bears have been outscored 32-118.

In their last 3 games, they have been outscored 0-53 in the first half.

What: Detroit Lions at Chicago Bears

When: Sunday, Dec. 21, 1 p.m.

Where: Solider Field, Chicago

How to watch: Fox 2 (Kenny Albert/Jonathan Vilma/Megan Olivi)

How to listen: 97.1-FM The Ticket in Metro Detroit or any number of network affiliates around the state.

Line: Lions -6.5

Injury report: On the active roster, the only player the Lions ruled out for Sunday is running back David Montgomery (knee). Additionally, safety Brian Branch (calf), guard Graham Glasgow (knee) and safety Ifeatu Melifonwu are questionable.

Officiating assignment: Clete Blakeman’s crew. A head official since 2010, he's handled a Lions game every year during that stretch and this will be No. 20 overall. This year, his crew has been throwing 17.31 flags per game, well north of the league average.

Last meeting: The teams met last month with the Lions jumping out to a 16-0 lead at the half and holding on for a three-point victory on Thanksgiving.

Three things worth watching

● Resiliency is a big component of Detroit’s identity. They haven’t lost back-to-back games since Oct. 2022. After a disappointing showing against Buffalo last week, in a game many had labeled a potential Super Bowl preview, the Lions will be looking to their NFC North rivals to help right the ship.

Division games are rarely easy, and Chicago showed some fight in the teams' Thanksgiving meeting, nearly pulling off the rally after getting dominated in the first half.

That loss led to the in-season dismissal of coach Matt Eburflus, and the Bears have been rolled in their two games under interim leader Thomas Brown, getting outscored 68-25 in losses to Minnesota and San Francisco.

But both those defeats came on the road, where the Bears are winless this season. They’ve been respectable at home, winning four times in seven tries. And they whooped the Lions at their place in 2023, one of the team’s worst losses that season.

Will Detroit's resiliency shine through again this week or will the Bears be able to defend their den?

● Montgomery is on the shelf with a knee injury, putting an onus on Jahmyr Gibbs to shoulder the backfield load. But the dynamic dual-threat won’t be asked to do it alone.

The Lions have a trio of options to round out the rotation. There’s veteran Craig Reynolds, in his fourth season with the team. He averaged 242 yards from scrimmage and 4.3 yards per carry his first three seasons with the team, but he hasn’t been needed as much in 2024 with Montgomery and Gibbs dominating the workload.

Then there’s rookie Sione Vaki, who has electric, big-play potential, but remains raw after only dabbling with playing running back in college before the Lions committed to a full-time position switch.

Keep your eye on Jermar Jefferson, the former seventh-round pick who has been toiling away on the practice squad since last playing in a regular season game three years ago. It's difficult to explain how much he's fought to stick around and get this opportunity.

Jefferson offers good size and a little more speed and athleticism than Reynolds, with a similar understanding of the scheme.

● Like Montgomery, the Lions need to replace cornerback Carlton Davis III, who landed on injured reserve this week after suffering a broken jaw making a tackle against Buffalo last Sunday.

The Lions have multiple ways they can approach the situation. The easiest would be a one-to-one replacement, moving backup Kindle Vildor into the starting lineup.

Alternatively, nickelback Amik Robertson could be shifted outside with some combination of Brian Branch, Ifeatu Melifonwu and Emmanuel Moseley backfilling the slot.

Melifonwu and Moseley are the wildcards to Detroit’s post-Davis approach. Melifonwu was activated off injured reserve on Saturday after missing the first 14 games with ankle and hand injuries. Still, it’s easy to remember the breakout role he had down the stretch of the 2023 campaign, making a number of key plays, both in coverage and as a blitzer.

As for Moseley, he’s barely played the past three seasons due to a string of major injuries, only getting a handful of special teams reps since the Lions activated him from injured reserve last month. He’s been a healthy scratch for the past two games. Regardless, this is a player the Lions envisioned starting going into each of the past two seasons. With Davis down, it feels like now or never for Moseley to contribute.

Bears-24
Lions-21
Actually could be a good Switt game going against his old team again. As tempting at starting Caleb is for the reasons you posted here - I just can't.

He's been pretty good vs Detroit, but they just don't use him anymore. I don't get it.

Lions Inactives:

Graham Glasgow
David Montgomery
Kwon Alexander
Jonah WIlliams

Brodric Martin
Colby Sorsdal
Giovanni Manu

A few I wasn’t expecting

Braxton Jones, Teven Jenkins, Jaylon Johnson are all available vs. DET

Bears inactives:

Travis Homes
Noah Sewell
Kiran Amegadjie
Ameer Speed
Doug Kramer
Gervon Dexter

The Lions had previous won the division three whole times in the Super Bowl era, (1983, 1991, and 1993). If we did have a better stretch it would have to be around the early 1990s.

As Jamo and Gibbs owner unless they score often and early I hope the Bears can at least keep it close don't want them to sit if they get blown out early.

What a clown show the Bears are. One more scoreless qtr then they can boast of getting shutout in the first half for 4 weeks in a row.

Unfortunately the Bears have neutered Caleb’s progress, hasn’t improved in a month. Seems like the goal is not to get him hurt, and safe passes not to throw INT’s. It’s far from the gunslinger mentality he had.
