One of the least appealing Lions games on the schedule. Also one of the more affordable road game tickets, and although it's a hike, easier to get to than most. Per usual there is a massive Honolulu blue takeover in downtown Indianapolis this weekend.

Lions are missing about half their starting defense, although up until now they have dealt with it well. The latest casualty is ILB Alex Anzalone, who passes the green dot helmet over to 2nd year LB Jack Campbell. Reserve LB Malcolm Rodriguez, who has started often over his 3 years, will help fill in the Anzalone hole.

Rookie Terrion Arnold, starting RCB from day 1, is questionable. Fellow rookie CB Ennis Rakestraw has been declared out. The Lions may get veteran Emmanuel Moseley back this week for his first action in 2024.

Colts are banged up along their offensive line. The IOL has struggled and Raimann (knee, out) Is their best OT. But generally their OL has graded out well.

The key player and also the biggest wild card is Anthony Richardson. He played a genuinely good game last week. Now he has an opportunity to demonstrate if he can be consistent.

GAME STATUS UPDATE

CB Terrion Arnold (Groin) has been downgraded to OUT for Sunday's game at Indianapolis (will not travel with the team).

The Colts have activated DE Tyquan Lewis from the IR and waived DE Genard Avery. We have also elevated G Atonio Mafi to the active roster from the practice squad.

The Lions have activated CB Emmanuel Moseley.

With Alex Anzalone, Derrick Barnes and Jalen Reeves-Maybin all on IR, Detroit has elevated newly signed LB David Long Jr from the practice squad for their Week 12 game against Indianapolis.

I think Indy could sneak up this week, and at least slow the Lions a little bit, holding them to FGs rather than TDs perhaps. This is kind of the season for Indy, if they lose they drop to 5-7, and that's probably it for them. I do think Josh Downs can get open against any of the Lions CBs, its just a matter of whether Richardson will be able to hit him.

For the Lions, I think this is a big Jahmyr Gibbs week. Colts are more susceptible to outside runs, and I think will be keen to not let the pass game beat them deep.

Lions' upcoming opponent hanging around AFC playoff picture despite making a mess of QB situation

Justin Rogers
Nov 20, 2024

Allen Park — The Lions will wrap up their every-four-year tour of the AFC South this Sunday with a trip to Indianapolis. The last time the teams squared off at Lucas Oil Stadium was 2016. Thankfully, the scouting combine is held in the city annually or I’d suffer from sinus-clearing shrimp cocktail withdrawal.

Between these battles in Indy, the Lions hosted the Colts in 2020. Like most games from that dismal era, it didn’t go well for the hometown team. A nearly 40-year-old Philip Rivers in what turned out to be his retirement tour had one of the best performances of his final season, completing 23-of-33 for 262 yards and three touchdowns in a 41-21 thumping.

But unlike the other two teams from the AFC South division the Detroit hadn’t seen in four years, Houston and Tennessee, there’s been a surprising amount of roster continuity in Indianapolis.

To be fair, some of the players are on injured reserve, but this week’s foe has more than a dozen guys from that 2020 meeting still on the payroll, including five starting offensive and defensive linemen, running back Jonathan Taylor, wide receiver Michael Pittman and defensive backs Julian Blackmon and Kenny Moore.

That kind of stability is unusual, particularly after undergoing a coaching change, which the Colts did between the 2022 and 2023 seasons. They axed Frank Reich in the middle of the '22 campaign, hiring former Chargers and Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen the following offseason.

Additionally, since there might not be another spot to shoehorn in this tidbit, Steichen’s offensive coordinator is former Lions OC Jim Bob Cooter. This felt like something you needed to know.

So if so much is the same, what’s new with the Colts?

Well, if we’re only willing to go back to last season, the answer is not much. There might not be a team that did less in free agency, although the decision to swap Gardner Minshew for Joe Flacco as the backup quarterback has led to the most interesting storyline out of Indianapolis this season.

Here’s a brief recap before getting into it. The Colts had a pretty great run at QB between Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck, but when the latter abruptly retired ahead of the 2019 season, the team had to patchwork the position for a few years with Rivers, Carson Wentz and Matt Ryan, who they similarly ushered into retirement after just one season.

Finally bad enough to take a swing at a franchise QB in the draft, the Colts used the No. 4 pick in 2023 on ultra-athletic, but raw dual-threat Anthony Richardson.

The upside with Richardson was and remains enormous, with appropriate Cam Newton comparisons based on their build and physical tools. But after an injury-shortened rookie year, and some glaring struggles to start his second year, the Colts pulled the plug on Richardson and turned the keys over to Flacco.

On one hand, it was a fitting continuation of the Rivers and Ryan arc of past-expiration passers. However, the execution of the change was clunky, at best, and ignited a national conversation about organizations failing young quarterbacks. It didn't help that the Colts initially doubled down on their decision, before reversing course after two games and reinserting Richardson back into the starting lineup last week.

To the youngster's credit, it was one of the best performances of his very brief career. He completed 20-of-30 for 272 yards, a touchdown and zero interceptions in a win over the Jets.

Richardson’s arsenal is made up of the talented Taylor in the backfield, Pittman, a big-bodied option who splits his time outside and the slot, Alec Pierce, one of the game’s most underrated vertical threats, and Josh Downs, a shifty and efficient slot receiver who can rack up receptions in a hurry.

They might rank in the lower half of the league in yards and points, but when Taylor gets going and Richardson minimizes the miscues, the unit is loaded with explosive potential. Driving the length of the field for a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns against a good Jets defense last week was impressive.

Defensively, the Colts are less interesting. The team's only veteran addition of note this offseason was nose tackle Raekwon Davis. He's averaging fewer than 20 defensive snaps over the past month. In the draft, the team used its first-round pick on edge rusher Laiatu Latu, who has been OK, tallying 26 pressures and 3.0 sacks in his first 11 games.

Overall, the unit gives up a lot of yardage. They’re surrendering 374.5 yards per game, which ranks 28th. That’s troubling with a Lions team that just set its franchise's single-game yardage mark last weekend.

To the Colts’ credit, they limit the damage on the scoreboard. Their 22.7 average points against checks in closer to the middle of the pack. That’s fueled by an opportunistic group that’s generated 17 turnovers, including a league-leading nine fumble recoveries.

Lions are going to be down a number of defensive starters, though looking around the league, that's not atypical.
I feel like a lot of this will be about how AR performs. Not including the week he was injured, last week was the only one this year that he completed more than 50% of his passes. The Lions' strength (man coverage) has been Richardson's weakness. Though there's the narrative that the Lions struggle with mobile QBs, until they don't.
Colts' defense struggling overall though, so this could be a game where Detroit's offense sets the tone. Or possibly a track meet.

I'm having difficulty coming up with scenarios where the Colts can keep pace. They're giving up 143.1 yards rushing per game - 5th worst - and they're also 28th in yards passing allowed.

I don’t think Indianapolis has the answers for the problems Detroit’s attack causes defenses.

Versus the blitz, AR has been pretty awful. 16/42 245 1 TD 2 INT. He's 32nd (out of 41 qualifying QBs) on passes over 20 yards; Goff is 3rd.

I could see it being close early.
  • at DAL - Lions led 7-3 after the 1st Q
  • TEN - Titans were tied at 14 early in the 2nd
  • at GB - Packers led 3-0 after 15 minutes
  • at HOU - Texans led 23-7 at halftime
  • JAX - Jaguars drew first blood, 3-0
But Detroit is incredibly focused rn. I don’t see them letting IND hang around very long.

Kindle Vildor likely the starting RCB tomorrow. Might see E-Man a bit as the Slot corner although I anticipate most of those snaps should go to Amik Robertson.

First regular season game of Jack Campbell wearing the green dot. Looking forward to seeing how often they give Richardson different looks.

AR presents a lot of problems as a runner. Hopefully they focus on keeping him contained - would love it if they can take away the best part of his game & force him into being a pocket passer.

This will be the 12th NFL start for Anthony Richardson. He made 13 starts in college (12 in his junior year), which is tied with Mitch Trubisky for the fewest starts by QB drafted in the first round.

The 28 points scored by the Colts against the Jets last weekend is the highest output in any game which AR started and did not get injured in his brief pro career.

The situation that favors the Colts is just Lions struggle with mobile QB, Richardson is able to keep extending drives, keeping the Lions off the field and in the meantime, Goff makes some poor road decisions. This would be the signature win for Richardson and would totally change the narrative around him.

If the Lions protect the ball I think they roll today. Nobody has really stopped their offense. In addition, they are among the leagues best in both red zone offense and red zone defense. That along with one of the best turnover differentials in the league is a great recipe for success.

I would take Richardson and Montgomery. Colts run defense has stunk and Lions is good. Detroit is weakeded at CB with injuries and has been known to give up yardage to rushing QBs (although has not been that bad this season).. But I do expect a couple INTs from the Detroit safeties.

The Lions run game will dominate and it will be a long day for the Colts. The Colts are just not good enough on offense to match.

It is the NFL. One of the best thing about the league is those things could happen.

I don't think Mr (self-described) One-of-One will be falling azz backwards into stardom today, but I make incorrect judgements about this game all the time.

AR made the best throw of the season IMO. He has a crazy number of turnover worthy plays, but the fact that he can do stuff like that, AND he is the arguably best athlete to ever play quarterback....I mean, heck yeah he's going to get a lot fo chances to make good on the investment.

Hopefully it's a good game. Anytime the Lions struggle and face adversity, that's a good thing - looking at the bigger picture. Everyone has ebbs and flows. It's been 10 weeks with only one bad outting - and they responded by doing the reverse 49ers game when it happened. Vikings pushed Detroit hard, had to comeback twice. The more games like that the Lions have, the more battle tested they'll be when it's the single elimination tournament.

Chants of Jared Goff ring in the crowd as he makes an appearance. Bates is the only player in uniform on the field. Jamo walks out in shorts. Early crowd is mostly Lions.

Food at Lucas is really good in the club area. Brisket beans and slaw for $14.50. 16 oz can for $9. Not bad at all. Sitting just 20 feet behind the Lions bench.

Will likely be the biggest Honolulu blue takeover yet.

Short drive with cheaper seats compared to Ford Field. Everyone wants to be part of this phenomenon.

The Detroit Lions do not have any winning streaks on the list of the NFL's 50 longest streaks. Need to get to 11 to join the Top 50.

The longest winning streak of consecutive road games in Detroit Lions history is 6 games, which spanned multiple seasons, starting in the 2010 season and ending in the 2011 season. The winning streak started on Dec 19, 2010 with a 23-20 away win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and ended on Nov 13, 2011 with a 13-37 away loss to the Chicago Bears.

Since the NFCCG loss to the 49ers, Detroit has opened 2024 5-0 on the road.
