Lions Claim Kevin O'Connel off Waivers (1 Viewer)

I hope the Bills would have at least tried to pick him up. I know we can't find out for sure, but that would have been a nice opportunity for them.

they didn't have a chance.I figure it could be some or all of:they needed some bodies for their last preseason gametrade bait since KC and Denver have qb injuriesa backup for next year since they'll probably let culpepper and/or stanton go

I'm sure there are all sorts of QBs available and the best one the Lions could find for their situation is Brooks Bollinger.

This man's ability to land a job is bordering on heroic.

trade bait since KC and Denver have qb injuries
I doubt this- both KC and Den have NE connections (obviously) and if Belicheck thought anyone would bite he would have shopped him quickly before cutting him.

Four teams put in waiver claims on QB Kevin O'Connell, a reflection that he had value on the market. Detroit, Denver, Cleveland and the N.Y. Jets put in claims. O'Connell went to Detroit, because the Lions had priority on waiver claims based on their 0-16 record in 2008.

I think Bollinger is just a warm body.

However, they will give O'Connell a chance to see what he has, and he might stick, especially if they decide he's better than Stanton. They also now have a QB that there is some interest in, so we'll see if he gets swapped for something the Lions need at another spot - because they could certainly uwe more talent, even if it's depth.

Nice job using their waiver priority here.

"Nice job using their waiver priority here."

...because so many teams would have mistakenly NOT had their waiver priority apply to a waiver wire pick up!

BB Is a body for the last preseason game

O'Connel is worth a look as a developmental type. Stanton has gotten hurt way too often in very limited time, he was a pick of the old regime, I think he is on his way out.

I think Stanton will go on IR and O'Connell sticks as the 3rd QB, unless they see him practice and don't like what he does. O'Connell was not picked up because of the lack of QBs for this weeks preseason game; that's why they picked up Bollinger. I don't believe O'Connell will play this week.

My guess is this is probably all there is to it.
Bingo. They don't want to dress Cpepp or Stanton for this game, and they don't want to play the entire game with just Stafford. These guys will be back on the street once they cut to 53, or if Stanton's knee is worse than they're letting on and he'll get the boot.
Culpepper has 8 stitches in his foot and Stanton is going in for surgery I don't think they have a choice.

:goodposting:Since you're failing to understand, the Matt Millen run Lions wouldn't have grabbed him, so they wouldn't have used their priority, which they can leverage into gaining talent.

So are the Jets going to carry 4 QBs?

Either Clemens' shoulder is worse than reported, or the Jets have a trade in the works.

Edited to add: Or maybe the Jets just want to know more about NE's playbook...

The Lions certainly are using the benefits of a 0-16 waiver order. Any compensation should be considered a win for O'Connell. They also picked up Marcus McCauley on waiver today.

thats my guess
Looks like a plan is in the works. Jets looking to flip O'Connell to Broncos?

We mentioned earlier today the possibility that the Pats didn't try to trade quarterback Kevin O'Connell before cutting him because New England coach Bill Belichick wanted to slide the 2008 third-rounder through to the Chiefs, whose G.M. is former Patriots V.P. of player personnel Scott Pioli.

The fact that, you know, Pioli didn't submit a waiver claim for O'Connell sort of blew that theory to hell.

But the Broncos, coached by former Pats offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, did make a claim for O'Connell. And even if Belichick wasn't trying to help McDaniels out, there's a belief that the trade of O'Connell from the Lions to the Jets might be a precursor to renewed trade talks between the Jets and the Broncos for receiver Brandon Marshall.

The notion has been floated by Mike Klis of the Denver Post. Though Klis points out that a source says the Broncos have no intention of trading Marshall, who rejoined the team today after a nine-day suspension for conduct detrimental to the team, the Jets seem to have even less of a need for O'Connell than the Lions did.

Marcus did nothing for the Vikings. Some folks suggested that the Vikings selecting him in the 3rd round was something of a steal but he couldn't have been more invisible.

once again, Mayhew continues to impress. Trades a pick for Ko Simpson to get much needed help at S...then uses the WW to pick up a QB he knows others want, and then turns around and trades him for a late round pick, meaning they basically got Simpson for nothing. Pretty savvy move imo.

They aren't gonna win a ton of games this year, but i am 100% convinced that they are FINALLY in capable hands. (They also released the idiotic 2nd rounder Alaima-Francis today too....yet another Millen draft blunder)

Oh I wasn't trying to insinuate that McCauley is a world beater. The fact is though the Lions are terrible at CB. After Henry and Buchannon they are throwing darts at the wall.

gotta figure the lions listened to broncos too plus that they have more needs than the Jets wherein a Bronco player offered in trade would satisfy their team needs as well
