CB Davis shows fire at rookie minicamp

Cornerback A.J. Davis was jumping at the Lions' three-day rookie minicamp that wrapped up Sunday.

"I asked the defensive guys, 'What do you think of him?' " assistant offensive line coach Mike Barry said. "And they said, 'He's like the Energizer Bunny.' And it's the same way he was when he was at N.C. State."

Barry was North Carolina State's offensive line coach before he joined the Lions last year. Even though he didn't work with Davis directly in college, he knew a lot about him.

"We'd show the films on Monday, and his clips always came up on covering a guy, making a big play, great effort," Barry said. "On special teams is where he was really on the clips a lot."

The Lions took Davis with the fourth-round pick (105th overall) they got from Oakland for wide receiver Mike Williams and quarterback Josh McCown.

Davis was so fired-up at rookie camp, the coaches had to tell him to tone down his trash talk. He bemoaned not wearing shoulder pads. He loves what he can do in the Tampa Two defense.

"It gives you a chance to come up on blocker and hit people, really play football, the man's game," Davis said. "When we get the shoulder pads on, I can really show you."

Davis is looking forward to facing Roy Williams, Mike Furrey and Calvin Johnson in practice.

"It's good to have all the good receivers on your team," he said, smiling. "So on Sunday it's going to be pretty easy."

ODDS AND ENDS: Tight end Rudy Sylvan, an undrafted free-agent signee, looked good and might have a chance to make the team behind Dan Campbell and Casey FitzSimmons. ...

Coach Rod Marinelli said defensive tackle Shaun Rogers probably would not participate in next week's mandatory minicamp because of shoulder and knee rehab. "I want to wait another week to see, but I want to be smart with him," Marinelli said. "He's got to be right."

They need a lot of help in the secondary, so hopefully he turns out well!

Maybe BMW will be worth something after all!

Jeez, the Lions look like they got a heck of a player. Props to Bloom once again here for nailing this. While many draft sites had him going late Day 2, Bloom had him going Mid Round 3. Nice work again Bloom.

I really do like this kid and hoped that the Jaguars would make a play for him at some point. He offers immediate returns because of his speed and natural ability to get to the ball. And Im pretty gung-ho about his prospects in the Cover-2. He's a perfect fit in the Tampa-2 because of his speed and ball skills and the Lions are looking for a starter to replace Bly IIRC. Im going to try and stash him in leagues that require two or more corners. Suffice to say that he will get very many opportunities to make plays; teams will be looking to pick on him and take advantage of that weak secondary. IDP value here.
