This surprised me a little, because they cut Donte curry, who was their special teams captain, and suggested Baldwin would play a lot of special teams. They hope to be able to put him on the practice squad, so he should be kept on the long term dynasty radar.
The Lions claimed safety Eric Frampton off waivers from Oakland and waived linebacker Johnny Baldwin to make room for him on the 53-man roster.
They drafted Baldwin in the fifth round this year, 158th overall, seven spots before the Raiders drafted Frampton. They had hoped to sign Baldwin to the practice squad, but Kansas City claimed him off waivers.

I agree. There are too many linebacker starved teams (eg Trotter signed) to try a move like this, especially after the buzz Baldwin had apparently created at his pro day. Baldwin may be raw, but he looked good in the preseason against the second team offensive opponents. Could prove to be a nice pickup for the Chiefs.
I heard they didn't mean to cut him, but when the NFL called DET to ask who they were cutting for Frampton, a janitor answered the phone, and he closed his eyes and pointed to a roster. Bad luck for DET, but good news for the Chiefs!!
