Lions Release (1 Viewer)

They shouldn't lose much (if anything at all) having shaun cody step in for him.

Jim Haslett and Scott Linehan probably has Wilkinson's agent on speed dial now. They've been looking for a big run-stuffer and if he comes cheaper than Jason Fisk or Grady Jackson, he's probably a Ram.

Apparently they got tired of waiting for his decision.

his agent said he did not decide to retire yet.

Shaun Cody is as good now and alot younger.

good pick up by the Lions 2 years ago in the draft.

A slight tangent, but is there hope for the Lions defense this year?

The footballguys consensus has them pretty low.

He probably retires, but if he doesn't the conventional wisdom is that the Rams or Fins will sign him.

But did he play for Marvin in Washington? Was Cincy a horrible stop for him?

Cincy could use another run stuffer, and he could end his career where it started.

Yeah, pitifully.

Cincy signed Sam Adams a few weeks ago, so I think it is doubtful they bring back Wilkinson. He also pretty much smoked his way outta town and wasn't much of a professional. I doubt management would sign off on this one.

This may be true. However their D line depth is pathetic and they should have addressed this in the draft instead of taking Calhoun or another CB.My opinion.

I heard he just didn't want to go through training camp, but might sign with someone thereafter.

From Pro Football Weekly

PFW: How will the Lions compensate for Wilkinson’s loss?

Reynolds: Prior to the draft, Millen had anticipated losing Wilkinson, yet he and head coach Rod Marinelli chose not to address the position at that time. Last year’s second-round pick, Shaun Cody from USC, is a better fit for the one-gap, penetrating front that Marinelli will feature. Cody, though, isn’t an every-down player and the Lions must get something out of reserves Tyoka Jackson — a former Marinelli pupil in Tampa Bay — and Marcus Bell and Damian Gregory. It’s a transition the Lions were certain to make in this defense, one that favors smaller and more athletic tackles. Even Cory Redding, who played a “three-technique” at the University of Texas, could figure in the DT rotation after spending most of his first three seasons at defensive end.

Whether the Lions were reluctant to release Wilkinson or not, it was a move Marinelli and Millen needed to make in order to spread the mantra Marinelli brought to the team. He’s preaching effort and desire, something they’d seen none of from Wilkinson over the offseason. Marinelli also sent a message that the Lions are bigger than one player, and nothing is guaranteed on his club. Did it help to have a second-round pick with potential like Cody waiting in the wings? No question. But this decision was almost as much about making a statement as it was about closure to the Wilkinson situation, one that may not have ended until Wilkinson decided in late July what his future held.

I would have to say D-line depth is a strength for the Lions. Maybe not as much without Wilkinson, but still, not bad.Rogers, Cody, Hall and Redding is a very good starting unit. At DE, Edwards is a great situational pass rusher and DeVries is a very solid backup. DT isn't great now, but Marcus Bell makes plays when he's out there. Redding can play DT in a pinch, and they signed Tyoka Jackson. I don't know much about Tyoka, but his name is cool.

DL is really the only position where I wasn't concerned entering the offseason.

I think the Lions defense could be very good. It looked strong to start last season before being ravaged by injuries. As I mentioned in my post above, DL is a big strength. Rogers is a monster, Hall is very good, Cody could be very good soon and Redding is solid. One of the better DLs in the league IMO.

At LB, Teddy Lehman, Ernie Sims and Boss Bailey all have big upside, but also big durability questions. This could be one of the best young units in the league, or a total disaster.

Bly is very good at CB, but he's more of a playmaker than a pure cover corner. Would be better if he didn't have to mark the other team's best guy all the time. Second CB is the biggest hole on the defense. Fernando Bryant was awful in 04 and then missed last year with an injury. If he would play half as good as his contract says he should, we'd be all right.

Kennedy played well at safety last year, and Bullocks should be an upgrade over Holt. If not, Holt isn't too terrible, although he's better as a backup. I think we're ok there.

From a fantasy D/ST perspective, Drummond is a very good return man if he can stay healthy. I also think Marinelli's quick, attacking style may make them a good fantasy commodity by generating sacks and turnovers. They would not be a bad gamble as your second D.

unfortunately for us Lions fans you mentioned health issues several times. bailey and lehman haven't even come close to staying healthy in their short careers. bly and bryant also have injury concerns. if the defense stays healthy i agree they could be a surprisingly good unit, but let's not forget we're talking about the lions. nothing ever goes well for the lions.
