Former Vikings WR Robinson joins Lions

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Detroit Lions signed wide receivers Marcus Robinson and Cliff Russell and re-signed cornerback Keith Smith on Wednesday.

Robinson was cut by the Minnesota Vikings with one game left last season despite leading the team with four touchdown receptions in 10 games. He started 19 of his 41 games over three seasons in Minnesota, catching 107 passes for 1,553 yards and 17 touchdowns. Robinson has 43 career touchdowns in nine seasons with the Chicago Bears, Baltimore Ravens and Vikings.

Russell was released by the Miami Dolphins during last season after catching two passes in three games.

Smith, who was a restricted free agent, was selected by Detroit in the third round of the 2004 draft. He has started four of 46 games, making 60 tackles over three seasons and one interception.

Robinson could be effective opposite Roy.

(In the three games in which he actually plays. )
Robinson was cut by the Viking - the freaking viking - do you know how bad you have to be in order to not make the cut with the likes of Troy Williamson, Travis Taylor, and (ehll I can;t even name the third one last year). In other words - This is another great WR signing by the Lions.

and :bye: any chance of the Lions getting Calvin Johnson
first thought that came to my mind as well, although, i didn't expect them to draft him anyway .. they'll trade down
I think DET takes either Russell or Johnson with the #2. Millen was on the NFL Network and he said he felt either guy would be good there. When pressed by a reporter about DET's pick being a slam dunk he backpedaled. I think he is open to trading down if the price is right and if not he'll take either of the above mentioned players.

This just makes it official... :bye: BMW and :bye: any chance of the Lions getting Calvin Johnson
 Ditto on CJ, I didn't think about BMW as this seemed like a foregone conclusion anyway. I hope the Raiders come to some agreement with Russell early so the fun can begin.

I'm not sure how the signing of these two could impact whether or not Det drafts CJ. Neither of these guys is more than depth at WR. Neither will supplant Furrey for the #2, much less impinge the ability of CJ to immediately start.

Obviously, BMW is heading out the door, but this doesn't mean anything in terms of the draft and CJ, I don't think.

So, signing Marcus Robinson is basically the equivalent of getting Calvin Johnson, so they don't pick CJ in the draft??
It's about need & the Lions have other more pressing needs - this just kinda highlights that. IMO

I dont understand why the Lions shouldnt or won't draft Calvin Johnson? They obviously need a starting WR opposite Roy and Im pretty sure he is #1 on their draft board. Is the only reason they shouldn't draft Calvin is because they got 2 busts in BMW and Charles Rogers? that sounds like a weak excuse to me.

Tell you what. Go back and research why he was cut by the Vikings and get back to us. Seems your memory isn't very good.HINT - it wasn't that he wasn't being used or not producing. In weeks 12 and 13 he had 11 targets each (including a 7-82-1 game), but was cut 3 weeks later.

This is a smoke screen to make teams think they are not taking CJ 21. They could have signed these 2 WRs a month ago or a month from now. The Lions are taking CJ 21 and trading him to the Bucs ala SD and NYG.

Robinson is the ultimate niche player, great for fade routes into the corner. He's been past it for some time as far as anything else goes.

The Lions are idiots. They prove it over and over again. How many WR's have they gone thru in the last 9 months? I probably missed a couple.Ellis

Bradford (x2)

Bodiford

Drummond

hakim

Martinez

Carl Ford

Shepherd

Crap Thorpe

McCown

now

Robinson

Russell

One thing is for sure. They have no ability to judge WR talent.

Cool...

if Robinson gets cut by Detroit, then Green Bay can sign him and cut him and then he'll have been cut by every team in the NFC North. Not many players can say that!

Robingson and Russell could be easily cut with no harm done. It's insurance. Nothing more. This means nothing for the draft IMO...
