I missed the song before Fire on the Mountain, but it seems like it goes with Estimated Prophet a lot (or used to?).

That may be related to this being the best of the three shows so far, either the band being more comfortable allowing him to come to the forefront (he is best at channeling Jerry, so why not), or he in doing so - somebody earlier noted he was being sensitive to boundaries, maybe to a fault, and didn't want to overshadow the band. In that sense, maybe the first few shows were like feeling out rounds for boxers (in a good way, not competitively). Maybe they are just getting better and building chemistry, rapport and momentum with greater familiarity born from each show - is so, that bodes well for the penultimate Fourth of July show, and the 50th Anniversary finale Sunday.

The Dead were the spiritual godfathers and precursors to the whole jam band scene, of which Phish is the most prominent example, so it is fitting Trey should do the last shows in Jerry's place. Kind of like his (and the band's) legacy coming full circle, and living on.

Damn good second set and the first set had its moments. It is true that once they let Trey go to the forefront, it got a hell of a lot better.

My gripes are the drums and still did not get enough Hornsby or Chimenti.

They can build on this though, best show is probably yet to come.

 
they didn't "let" trey go to the forefront. that's what he was brought in for. it just took him awhile to get comfortable.

eta: certainly didn't help that phil turned the opening night into a phil and friends ruin primal dead extravaganza.

so much for my ripple w/ hunter to close the run call

Thought that is what I said ("...or he in doing so."), maybe we are just descibing the same thing differently - intention doesn't necessarily always overlap 100% with actuality, so as noted before, and by others, there has been some adjustment, and it is still a work in progress.

But the trajectory seems to be pointed straight up. :)

I hadn't thought about expectations a lot, but wasn't expecting things to be this tight. I missed the first night, but Trey's sonic pallette and presence has become increasingly seamlessly interwoven (and "Jerry-like") with the collective, ensemble sound.

* They have to adjust to him, too, it isn't just about him adjusting to them.

Listening to this first set, still not enough Bruce on vocals. But otherwise they sound great.
