LJ Shelton signs with the Dolphins (1 Viewer)

Nice for Ronnie Brown owners.
 Not so sure I see that. Nick Saban may see something in Shelton but you have to be circumspect until he does it on the field. Shelton failed to live up to his potential in not one, but two places now [Arizona and Cleveland]. What's more telling about that is that, despite Shelton's obvious "potential", both the Cardinals and Browns were willing to let him go despite have major offensive line issues. He wasn't "good enough" to keep around even though their lines were in need of talent.

There were plenty of other tackles on the market that carried grades similar to, or better than Shelton...Ashworth, Barry, Black, Fabini, Freitas, Hopkins, McDougle [who the Fins released], Pearson, Mike Williams, Rogers.

The others may have been just as good, but any of them would be an upgrade for Miami.

I like this signing for the Dolphions for a few reasons . . .We haven't had a pure LT in several years. He's not an all-pro but I think he's solid

1) He's a pure LT.

2) He has ideal size/wingspan at 6'6, 345 (though he probably needs to lose 20 lbs).

3) His best years are ahead of him as he is at an age where a lineman comes into his own - with experience, knowledge of other players, etc.

4) Under Hudson Houck, Shelton will see his best days as a lineman. It may take half the season to really show significant improvement. But, given what Houck did with last year's line, Shelton will improve.

And I could have sworn that CLE did try to resign him.

I thought they really liked Anthony Alabi? They've already got 1st round pick Vernon Carey at RT. Either they aren't completely sold on Alabi, or just paid a lot for depth at tackle...

I agree Miami has major issues on their OL, and it would not surprise me if the moved Shelton to guard instead of his traditional tackle position in order to solve it.

If he's there for depth than this is fine. If they think he's going to be a starter they're stretching. The guy has not lived up to his potential and right now I don't see him ever being anything more than decent at best. This really doesn't help Miami's O line other than giving them another piece to work with.

This is a huge pickup for Miami it gives them their first true LT in 10 years. Shelton is not a pro bowler but with what LT's are going for these days I think it is a good deal. Solid pickup, with Carey at RT they are looking better and better on offense. Just need to bring in Brees and Arrington, get err done. :excited:

Cleveland tried to re-sign him and couldn't come to terms. Shelton played pretty well for Cleveland last year. He is not a star, but he is solid and has tools that Houck can work with. The money will be the tell tale sign whether the signing makes sense or not, because if they gave him 5 mil a year than at best it is a mediocre move. Regardless, it is an improvement for the Dolphins and they surely want to cover Brees' blind side ;)

 If that's the terms, the Fins did well b/c that is a below market deal for any starting tackle at this point [given the new cap level].

At that rate I think its definitly a steal.

MIAMI -- Miami Dolphins offensive line coach Hudson Houck likes them big on his offensive line, so it was only natural for former Browns left tackle L.J. Shelton to be on his radar screen.

Monday, Houck and the Dolphins got what they wanted. Shelton, a former first-round choice who is 6-6 and 341 pounds, agreed to a four-year, $15 million contract that includes a $3.5 million signing bonus, according to ESPN.com's John Clayton.

Shelton will be the Dolphins' starting left tackle.

:goodposting: Tom Donohoe may have made some mistakes as the Bills GM, but passing on a Henry for Shelton trade, widely panned on this message board, was one of his good decisions.

 Low-risk, high reward signing. Shelton was pursued by Cleveland earlier in the offseason, which tells me the team wanted him back. At this price, hes certainly worth a try. The Dolphins have made due at LT with far less talent. Lets see if Hudson Houck can whip this guy into shape.

Not accurate.Romeo said he was just fine and that they wanted to re-sign him but weren't sure if they could handle the $. Ts=big$ usually

I'll try and find a link later

We are presently trying to keep our left tackle, L.J. Shelton. If he goes on the market then we have Plan B and Plan C and all those things we need to have ready. We've identified some guys we may be interested in if they become available.

good call by Tony Grossi back on Feb 28th

Meanwhile, negotiations with offensive left tackle L.J. Shelton heated up as the club sought to lock him up before Friday's anticipated free-agent deadline.

The Browns and Vance Larimer, Shelton's agent, met at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis at least three times. They are supposed to resume talks via telephone today.

Shelton, who turns 30 next month, would be an attractive player if he hit the open market. Larimer said Shelton would be agreeable to returning to the Browns even if he is not re-signed by Friday. But all it would take to lose Shelton in free agency would be one interested team, and the Miami Dolphins could be it.
