Looking for advice on DE/DT (1 Viewer)

Got smoked in my first IDP contest this weekend. Offensive issues mostly, but looking to upgrade the DL position. Its Dynasty, so there is the long term to think of too.

Current DL: Henderson (Jax) LaBoy (Ten) Ogunleye (Chi) Suggs (BAL)

Obviously Ogun and Suggs arent leaving the squad.

Options:

Chris Kelsay (buf), Ty Warren (ne), , Ebenezer Ekuban (min), Bryan Thomas (nyj), Anthony Weaver (hou), Bryant Young (sf)

I think I have ranked them in my own order of preference. Any comments?

Scoring:

Tackles=2, Assist=1, Sack=3, PD=1

I'd probably dump LaBoy for Thomas at this point as there's little recourse for leagues to move Thomas to an appropriate positional designation now if they haven't already. If you hear that the 49ers are serious about moving to a four man front (unlikely) and that Young will play end, I'd jump there but the evidence isn't strong enough yet. Kelsay is interesting too, but Henderson has good value in a system that gives 1.5 tackles per sack in the right matchup. If by some chance Tamba Hali is available -- get him.

No way would I drop Henderson in that scoring league. He is usually top 5 in tackles for DL every year. Last year, in one game he had 8 solos and 3 assists.

thanks for the feedback guys. What likelihood is a team to alter their core 7 mid year? (ie: Bryant Young). It would seem to me that is a major shift that isnt done often?

It's all personnel driven. Some teams have the flexibility in personnel and scheme to change easily (eg NE, WAS). Most don't -- the type of player you need to be successful in a 3-4 vs a 4-3 is often very different, the depth at each position on the roster often won't support it, and the non-vanilla blitz packages, run stunts and other scheme particular issues take a bit to install and play well.

The core group can change due to injury, or a need to look at the young guys, but that's the same with any position.

Henderson/Suggs/Ogunleye are your big 3. LaBoy is wire fodder compared to those 3. Realize that if it's dynasty, you may want Kelsay over thomas, as Thomas will likely be repositioned to LB next year in your league.

Went and got Kelsay and Thomas. Dropped Henderson and Laboy for better or worse, thats the decision. Dont like DTs when i only have to start a DL.

Question is now: do I start Thomas, who is listed as a DE, but is starting at OLB this week at home vs. a passing Pats team OR stick with Ogunleye at home vs Kitna and the Lions?

Other choice is Suggs vs Oak, so thats a no-brainer

I was just asked about the availability of Ogunleye. In a dynasty format, Ogun is top 10 DL I think.

What is someone like him worth? I need to start 2 DL and I need help at some of the offensive positions.

signed,

IDP noob still trying to figure it all out

That's a fine default but there are plenty of exceptions to the rule. Probably not going to backfire too much on you here, especially with Spicer dinged now too in Jax.

You must have an idea of the relative value of every position before you draft, before you trade, before you do anything in a dynasty league. You can't make educated decisions without it. I can't stress it enough -- it's the first step every dynasty owner should do in their league, IDP or otherwise.Learn how many points an average #1, #2, etc starter score in your league and compare that by position. Trends will immediately become clear. You'll probably find you're overvaluing some players and undervaluing others. Then get some idea of how the league values these guys. Do you have to "overpay" for a given position (developing rookie back like Brian Calhoun)? Can you get a stud rookie DE like Tamba Hali late in the draft because you're leaguemates are busy drafting Brad Smith in the 5th round and waiting three years to learn he's useless?

These are the kinds of things you have to ask yourself before anything else. Then, evaluating trades, waivers, draft picks, etc is much easier -- relatively speaking. You know the "correct" value based on your evaluation of the player, you just need to decide where in the space-time continuum you're team lies. Are you driving for a title and willing to overpay for a starting upgrade? Are you willing to sell a player a year early to get premium value?

If you think Ogunleye is a top ten DL over a three year window (I think that's optimistic but valid), then your study of relative value and league tendencies will tell you what you can expect to get. You may get more or less, but that's up to your negotiation.

But, really, you've got to have a foundation to work from or you'll never feel comfortable making dynasty decisions.

wow. thats a lot of homework Jene! Thanks though. Its a bit early in the league I suppose to figure this out (new league after week 1 after all :) )So that means I will hold off on the trade discussions entirely
