CHARLOTTE – Free agent running back DeAngelo Williams said Monday night he hopes the Carolina Panthers will make him an offer he can’t refuse so he can one day retire as a lifelong Panther.

Appearing on video chat with fans on Livestream on the eve of free agency, Williams told listeners that he’ll meet with general manager Marty Hurney on Tuesday at Bank of America Stadium to discuss his future.

The Panthers can begin talking to free agents Tuesday but can’t sign anyone until Friday under new league rules established Monday.

“I honestly and truly want to stay a Carolina Panther and they’re doing their part of keep me a Carolina Panther,” Williams said. “So I’m very excited about that. Carolina gets the first stab at me. If everything looks great, then why entertain other offers? So that’s where we stand right now.

“There are possibly a few other teams I don’t know about right now, but I’m pretty excited about where we are going as far as me and the Panthers. Wish me luck. I’m going in (to the stadium) as a Panther and I want to stay a Panther. I want to retire as Panther. But at the end of the day it’s a business.”

Williams said he’s heard the rumors about him possibly heading to Denver to rejoin former coach John Fox, but cautioned, “I had countless people hit me up on Facebook saying that I’m going to Denver. Don’t believe what you hear.”

Williams said he has a conversation earlier this offseason with offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski that left him intrigued about how the Panthers will use him and fellow running back Jonathan Stewart, one of his best friends on the team.

One option in particular has him excited.

“Chud said he has a big role for me and Jonathan to play this year and I’m pretty excited about that,” Williams said. “They even have packages where they will put me and Jonathan in at the same time, so it’s going to be pretty cool.”

I've noticed from time to time, players change their mind, and don't always mean what they say. Don't know how much weight to put into this, honestly.

This sounds like a guy trying to say the right thing and putting Carolina on the spot. Do they have the finances to be the highest bidder for him?

I think its about a 10% chance Dwill stays. Maybe less. I really dont think he wants to play for a rebuild and he can go straight to a contender.

I personally think he is lock for either Indy, GB or NE. Dwill in Indy would be sick from a fantasy perspective.

As someone who gave up a bit to get Stewart at the middle of last season I'm hoping this doesn't happen. Views on his stats if it does?

I think it's fantasy wishful thinking that he leaves Carolina. 70% he stays. Carolina can spend more than any team that has a need at RB and has expressed a desire to keep him. Does he really want to uproot his entire family from a small media town with gorgeous wetather that can afford to pay him more than any other team?

None of those teams necessarily need a RB and bringing in high priced free agent RBs aren't their style either. Indy is the most likely of the three you mentioned, but they have pretty solid depth right now and would likely look to bring back Addai first since he knows the system.I'm not sure there are any contenders that need a RB - but as a Stewart owner I sure hope some one does lure him away from Carolina.

Why wouldn't he say that? He wants to get paid and if Carolina pays him a ton he'll be happy and retire a Panther. It's business.

The Panthers have never struck me as an inept organization, so I bet he goes. They'd be crazy to tie up that much cap space with Stewart on the roster.

1) LOL really?2) Not sure how much cap space you think he'll take up, but the Panthers are way below the floor, they have to sign a lot of money up in a hurry. DWill _ Stewart makes that offense go, I don't think it'd be crazy at all.

I agree for the most part - especially with Goodson and Sutton as solid depth behind Stewart and the ability to sign a decent veteran at a baragain rate. The only reason to really bring him back is the fact he's a fan favorite and the Panthers are coming off a poor season. I don't think they are a team that is guaranteed to sell out each week, so they may have to consider bringing him back.

I dont think they are inept at all as an organization. They are well ran and widely respected. You can say they have made some really inept draft picks but Richardson is looking like a genius for purging the roster last year and coming in almost 60 million under the cap. Thats a power play type move to secure their roster and maybe acquire a couple more top line players.

Can you point to where it looks like he will be staying?

The thread title says "looks" like he will be staying. The bolded are his views on staying with the club. Seems like a guy who wants to stay in Carolina and is not too worried about being "the man".There are moves each year that "do not make sense" when it comes to FF, but this is the NFL. Carolina is breaking in a new $35 million QB in 2011; I am sure they will do all they can to alleviate his need to make decisions out there in the first couple of years, even if it mean stacking the backfield beyond what is necessary.

That should get the Broncos attention
Yeah, I think this was a shot across the bow at Denver more than Carolina. Telling Denver to bring their A game on an offer to pry him away from his beloved Panthers. Notice that he said he loves the Panthers, but they have to make him an offer he can't refuse. It's not about love for anything but the Benjamin's.

Exactly, he'll love Carolina if they show him the love (money) or if they don't he love another place that will. I don't blame him at all but this article changes nothing IMO.

But he publicly stated his love for Carolina. Per my wife that is a sign of true love which cannot be broken.I'm pretty sure this is proof he is staying in Carolina. Adjust your draft boards accordingly.

:goodposting: Williams said to DEN in essence: Really, I'm reluctant to leave Charlotte. I just love it here, and so does my family. It'd HAVE to be a very enticing offer to pry me away from my beloved 2-14, breaking-in-a-new-project-rookie-QB-Panthers. The offense is SOOO interesting to me here, I'm going to be sharing time with Jonathan Stewart. Maybe if I were to be FEATURED somewhere, I'd go there...It's the beginning of the wooing period here, folks, not the end. Offers start flowing today, and Williams will find MILLIONS of reasons to depart his beloved Carolina.

Yea there's a difference between saying you want to retire as a panther, and saying you want to retire as a panther so you hope they make you an offer you can't refuse

it's a win win statement for him. if CAR really ups the ante maybe he stays if it's more then other offers. No way he takes say 3 million a year instead of 6 or 7 if he can get it.

if he leaves, it's because the organization didn't pay him. so he isn't the bad guy. it also gets the attention of say DEN, MIA, NYG

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that the bidding for free agent DeAngelo Williams appears to have become a two-horse race between the Broncos and Panthers. The Dolphins no longer look to be in serious contention. The Panthers have the ability to offer more money than Denver, so based on that we'd give Carolina the slight edge. In terms of fantasy value and production, we'd still like to see Williams sign with the Broncos. Jonathan Stewart is going to miss out on a big opportunity if D-Will returns, probably never becoming a true featured ball carrier before his rookie contract expires

The Miami BS was a beat writer named Omar Kelly who did a nice fluff piece or a wish list back in March/Apr and that became the mantra for Miami wants DWill, but they drafted a RB fairly early so I never bought into them getting DWill. The Bucs not getting DWill is going to be a low down dirty shame...pair him with Blount, Freeman/Williams/KWII, good stron gOL, perhaps signing Logan Mankins and I'm telling you the Bucs would become a powerhouse on offense.

He also said thisDeAngelo Williams - RB - Panthers Free agent DeAngelo Williams has told friends that he would be interested in playing for the Giants if they don't retain free agent Ahmad Bradshaw.Williams is going to give the Panthers the first crack at re-signing him, but he'll have plenty of suitors. Bradshaw recently said there's a 75 percent chance he'll be back with the Giants, but other reports have that closer to 50-50. Williams' landing spot -- which we should know withing a few days -- is the most significant fantasy story of the free agency period.

A team that really really needs a RB might make an exception for a guy in his prime, but for the most part good teams don't spend a lot of money on FA RBs. And the Bucs front office gives every impression lately that they have got their act together.

Omar Kelly is a clown. Guy was so sensitive about everything on twitter. I finally had to unfollow him.

This is the second post where I have read the bolded, but nowhere in the original story does it state this...

We play fantasy football and want these guys to both be stand alone RB1's. I don't think DeAngelo cares about being 'the guy' or getting top dollar - as long as he is treated fairly. He and Stewart like each other and sharing the load, and he loves being a Panther. I think people are in denial. Unless Carolina doesn't want him, he will be perfectly happy staying.

Unless he can go to a contender i doubt he leaves.

Everyone is screaming Denver but they are arguably worse then Carolina.

Getting top dollar = getting treated fairly and every player is in search of that or close to it. I've not heard anything to suggest Deangelo is offering any kind of a hometown discount. Now the part about him not being "the guy". If I'm an NFL RB and the pay is equal whether I'm "the guy" or splitting carries with someone else give me the latter every time. Careers for NFL bell cow RB's are incredibly short and any team that was willing to pay me "the guy" money to be "one of the guys" I'd consider to be a major plus.

I agree completely. He's gone.

I have no clue why he'd want to stay in Carolina. Last year's offensive playcalling was some of the most inept I've witnessed. Having both DWill and Stewart on the roster and what do they do? Let Moore and Clauson throw ducks or let Goodson carry the load. It was as if they wanted to lose. All they had to do was give both DWill and Stewart 250 carries each, and they could have been .500 or better. Instead, they threw in the towel and went 2-14 and disappointed every fan who bought tickets to see their games.
