Neal, Russell added to roster

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer

Friday, May 8th, 2009 at 10:45 am in Oakland Raiders.

A couple of updates to the roster by John Herrera on the field:

FB Lorenzo Neal is wearing No. 41, with Louis Rankin wearing No. 40.

RB Gary Russell, who has experience with Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, was signed and is wearing No. 23.

QB Danny Soutwick is in on a tryout basis.

More to come later . . .
Bump up McFadden in your rankings boys and Bush too.

You saying Fargas doesn't know how to follow a fullback?

Did DMC get many leadblocks last season? Signing Neal is obviously indicative that they plan on going that route and the Raider running game has always had potential, is this a sign of a change in how they run or simply a boost to the status quo?

Last year would not be a good indication because they had such injury problems at FB last year. I think they did less lead blocks with a FB last year than they wanted and now have one of the best, although getting up there in age, at leading RB's, will likely do more.

Even if he's done, it speaks some to what they want to do.

Lorenzo Neal is a completely one-dimensional player - lead blocker. You don't sign him unless that's the intended style of running game you want.

overrated at this point. He was done when he left the Chargers.
Didn't he contribute to McGahee's 1000 yd season in Baltimore in '07? You can obviously argue whether or not McGahee is done now, and I am not an expert on what Neal has accomplished the last two seasons, but it stands to reason that he has contributed to atleast Balt since leaving the Chargers.

He seemed pretty useful for the Ravens last year. Also, I think we can knock Leron McClain down the rankings a little bit as this leads me to believe he'll be spending more time at FB this year.

Good point. I had high hopes for McClain this year. I guess Rice is my guy by default. Did the article say that Gary Russell went to Oakland as well? Didn't Cincy JUST get him?

Cincinnati signed him and released him a few days later.

The amazing thing I didn't realize when seeing this on PFT is that the Raiders are Neal's 8th team. Quite a lot considering how good he has been over his career.

He played well when he was on the field in Baltimore last season. Obviously, he is well beyond his prime but I think that he can still contribute. The Raiders just can not play him every snap but pick and choose when you get the old man out there.

The NFL has more and more gone away from using FB's. In some systems, the FB is the least important position on the entire team- and that is when they use them. I dont think it is surprising when you put it in this context and the constant changing of HC's and OC's in the NFL.

Neal is 39 years old.
:goodposting: I was going to post this. I see this as having negigible impact on McFadden or any other Oakland player, at least from a fantasy perspective (not sure if Neal can provide some useful leadership).
Man, I had to look this up.
Negigible: Quantities so small that they can be ignored
Didn't they finish last season with Luke Lawton at FB? I think Neal's a pretty decent upgrade.

isn't Neal about 40 years old? I bump up the Oakland RB's like fishing for bullheads, about 1 inch off the bottom :goodposting:
