Lovie's back in Tampa (1 Viewer)

Thought for sure he was going to be given an opportunity to ruin the Lions offense.

He'll actually have an opportunity to succeed in Tampa. Good running game, some nice pieces on defense, and a high draft pick.

Good luck to Tampa and to Lovie. I'm not a fan of his coaching skills, but he's one of the truly nice guys in the sport.

Yes! Pretty happy about this.
Why?

I think he'll restore some dignity back to the Bucs but when have these kind of hirings worked out? Jimmy Johnson, Joe Gibbs, Mike Shanahan, 2nd time around doesn't seem to work very well, Vermeil might be an exception.

For selfish reasons I would love to see him do well with Tampa and win a title there, full circle for Lovie, we all were fans during his time there under Dungy. I think there is a higher likelihood that in 3-4 years if not sooner, the fan base will be treating him the same way it has others and the offense has been a struggle for quite some time, not sure that is gonna get better with Lovie Smith.

Thoughts on Michael Vick starting 10 games next season?

Just to play the other side of the fence.

BB and Carroll went thru a process before they got another team. Carroll showed success for almost a decade in college football, BB went back to unite with Parcells IIRC. Parcells did not win another SB after leaving NYG although he went with NE to a SB, he did alright in NYJ and Dallas was hit n miss, no playoff wins as I recall.

Coughlin, yes agree.

It's hard to dislike Lovie. Class guy, players love him. But a defensive minded coach seems to be the reverse of where the NFL has been heading.

Couple more that just popped into my head

Andy Reid - I know too small of sample size but he is trending the right way

Mike Holgrem - He was a wreck in Cleveland but did well in Seattle

Tony Dungy

Andy Reid seems to be doing ok too.

Vick isn't coming here. That doesn't seem likely.

Vick is UFA so he can sign anywhere. Why would Lovie want him though?

What's with the Tedford love?

I like the hire. We had to go with an established guy after the last 2 swing & misses. My only gripe is that I would of rather had an offensive guy, since that is the primary problem. Tedford sounds like he can be a good OC, but he isn't going to have much to work with here. The O-line is horrible, and Glennon is hard to get excited about.

I'm also a little concerned about not letting the GM pick his coach, so I assume Lovie is going to get final say. I don't really think that is a bad thing as long as they get along.

I don't see Dallas letting Marinelli go as long as Monte is there.

I'm excited to see what transpires in these next few months with the rest of the coaching hires, and free agency.

I don't see Dallas letting Marinelli go as long as Monte is there.
I'd expect Kiffin isn't long for Dallas at all, so Marinelli should be looking for a gig pretty soon.
Rumors here in Dallas were that Kiffen was going to be offered a retirement package and Marinelli the DC job.

Lovie's hiring throws a curve into that.

I suspect Jerry will throw big money at Marinelli to stay. Sounds like Jerry's MO.

Wondering how this hire plays out for Revis....I've read that it helps as Lovie wants a big time defense and have also read a big time big priced CB is not needed in Lovie's Def.....Revis is $16M but can be cut without any hit....TB has a ton of cap room still and it would look pretty bad to deal a 1st and mid rder for a one yr rental...any thoughts or info?

Bucs are not cutting Revis. He was a top-3 corner this year and isn't 30. That would be completely insane.

Not even sure how a rumor like that takes off. Team doesn't even have a GM.

He took over a 1-14 Jets team, brought them to 9-7 his first season and had a 10-0 halftime lead in the AFC championship game in year 2.

Think it was mostly speculation on whether Lovie's defense he runs truly needs a top CB making $16M....since TB has a lot of $ I would also be shocked if they cut him but since it is essentially non guaranteed $ it will be discussed....plus if Im correct TB owes the Jets a 3rd rder if he is on the roster by a certain date...perhaps they do a little wink and handshake deal with him to release then re-sign a few days later to lower the compensation to the 4th rder....Saints did that a few yrs ago with Vilma.

Bucs are not doing a wink and shake deal with Revis. He's not being cut at all. Dropping 30 spots in the middle of the draft is not a big deal.

Guy was one of the highest graded CBs in the league this year. Lovie ran a lot of cover 1 and some man in Chicago. He can figure out how to use Revis. In fact he was probably part of the sales pitch the Glazers used to lure Lovie here.

Welcome to a bunch of 8-8 seasons!
He's something like 18 games over .500 for his

career, but yea sure ok.
I stand corrected. Get ready for a bunch of 9-7 years. Same difference.
The Bucs haven't won a playoff game since the Super Bowl, so I'm sure their fans would happily

take a few winning seasons.
Fair enough. 3 playoff wins in 9 years playing in what was one of the weakest divisions in football. Now going to one of the toughest. Prefers the Tampa 2 defense which will get smoked by passers like Brees and Ryan. Good luck!

The 16mil per year is pretty crazy, but not if you consider he didn't get a signing bonus, and has no guaranteed money. I think they hang onto him for another year at the 16 mil, then try and restructure next year. I'm surprised people in the league don't complain about the Revis contract, as it screws up the tag numbers for other teams. The top 5 CB salaries after Revis are 10mil. At 16 mil Revis makes the average about 1 mil higher. I doubt a guy like Grimes gets franchised due to this high number, and he has already been tagged so I believe it is higher due to the new CBA.

Thank god we didn't hand Josh Freeman 60 mil. I see them extending McCoy this off-season, and making some big changes on the O-line. Nicks will probably get cut. No other team is going to guarantee a guy with a bad foot anything. Penn and Joseph will be asked to restructure, and could be cut if they don't. You can't pay 6-7 mil for average linemen.

He ran almost no Tampa 2 the past few years. No team runs the T2 primarily. It's not 2003 anymore. Maybe you should watch some of these games? Or at least learn what the different defenses are? You kind of sound dumb here.

I think Joseph is 100% to get cut. Or at least restructured to a very team friendly deal. I do think they find a way to restructure Nicks.

I like the hire, congrats TB fans. Love gets kicked around a lot but I think his coaching style meshes well with the talent in TB already. He will get that defense playing better for sure. Curious to see what they do with their top pick in the draft. Glennon should have done enough to warrant the starting job with no competition IMO.

Who were the other options? It's not like there are a plethora of coaches with .700 winning percentages available.

I understand the game of football, but I do appreciate your attempt at embarrassing me.

They play cover 2 and switch to single safety or cover 3 as the situation demands. Ask any reasonable person out there what defensive philosophy Lovie runs. Then tell them how "dumb" they are.

Yes, they are no college coaches with a .700 available. Better to recycle.

Vick isn't coming here. That doesn't seem likely.
Again, why would you say that? Dungy worked hand in hand with Vick when he first got loose from prison and helped him land a job. Lovie Smith a Dungy disciple is hired by the same organization where he started under Dungy.

I think Vick is a strong candidate to land in TB with some veteran leadership and chance to start. I'm not saying I support it mind you but I seem to be able to connect the dots on this. I think it has a better chance than you think it does. Where you gonna find a veteran QB? Gonna hitch your wagon to a rookie? Mike Glennon the answer? You tell me what you see happening.

Where is our Brad Johnson?

I once worked under a manager that liked to hunt and went all the time. I've never been hunting and don't plan to ever go.

Did I just blow your mind?

Hint: Dungy wanting to help Michael Vick be a better person has absolutely nothing to do with who Lovie Smith thinks would be the best QB to run his offense.
