Lyrics That Are Not Timeless (1 Viewer)

Tomorrow we 'spring ahead'

Every year on this day, I make sure that I listen to one of my favorite songs which is Husker Du's 'Celebrated Summer'

The lyric/verse, from this song, that inspires this thread is....

Love and hate was in the air, like pollen from a flower

Somewhere in April time, they add another hour

Now that the time change comes in March this, at least to me, loses a little something. It's no longer timeless. Someone, 10 years from now, will probably question what it means.

What other lyrics can you think of that have lost their meaning over time?

:blackdot:

eta* got Chapin's Cats in The Cradle, but I know there are much better. It just immediately springs to mind.

what lyric/verse?

Just thinking about the theme of the song, it's the epitome of timeless.
I was thinking of all the stay-at-home dads and how the theme of the overworked man ditching his son had been passed by, actually.

Oh, it's timeless, but out of time. Maybe? If not, hence the dot.

Love fathers caring for their kids, BTW.

Another example.

This might be my favorite song of all time, but no one ever uses the term 'Answering Machine' anymore.

The Replacements - Answering Machine

Try to breathe some life into a letter
Losing hope, never gonna be together
My courage is at it's peak
You know what I mean
How do say you're O.K. to
An answering machine?
How do you say good night to
An answering machine?

Big town's got its losers
Small town's got its vices
A handful of friends
One needs a match, one needs some ice
Call-waiting phone in another time zone
How do you say I miss you to
An answering machine?
How do say good night to
An answering machine?

I get enough of that

Try to free a slave of ignorance
Try and teach a whore about romance

How do you say I miss you to
An answering machine?
How do you say good night to
An answering machine?
How do you say I'm lonely to
An answering machine?
The message is very plain
Oh, I hate your answering machine
I hate your answering machine
I hate your answering machine...

Warning - Biggie:

Who the #### is this paging me at 5:46 in the morning, crack of dawnin, and I'm yawnin... He has the beeper sound going off in the background.

LL Cool J - I Can't Live Witouth my Radio...

When was the last time you saw a boom box?

Oddly enough, that's the video for Bastards Of Young that Answering Machine is dubbed over.

Rest assured that there still are, and will always be, bastards out there.

This is for the hetero 500k thread:

Doin' the butt, hey sexy, sexy

Ain't nothing wrong if you wanna do the butt all night long

No, no, no, I can't drive, (I can't drive 55)

I can't drive (I can't drive 55)

(I can't drive 55)

(I can't drive 55)

No, no, no, I can't drive, (I can't drive 55)

I was thinking Panama, but wotthehell, I don't get this game. I'm all thematic, and y'all are literal.

My blood runs cold

My memory has just been sold

My angel is the cernterfold

I suppose if anyone ever did a cover, they'd have to change it to "my angel was on BangBus"

The ad lib in the outro on 867-5309/Jenny saying "for the price of a dime I can always turn to you." Now outdated for two different reasons.

I'm going to party like it is 1999...

Kodachrome, you give us those nice bright colors

There's a club, if you'd like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go, and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home
And you cry
And you want to die

Emerson Lake & Palmer:

Do you wanna be the pillow
Where I lay my head
Do you wanna be the feathers
Lying on my bed
Do you wanna be the cover
Of a magazine
Create a scene

Every day a little sadder
A little madder
Someone get me a ladder

Among my favorite ridiculous lyric songs. Great tune though.

I'm at a payphone trying to call home
All of my change I spent on you
Where have the times gone
Baby it's all wrong, where are the plans we made for two?

My blood runs cold
My memory has just been sold
My angel is the centerfold
Angel is the centerfold

"And she’ll have fun, fun, fun
’Til her daddy takes the T-Bird away"

"You’re old enough to kill, but not for votin"
