Mack Brown stepping down (1 Viewer)

Harbaugh, Franklin, Fisher, Strong, Malzahn, Tomlin, Gruden will probably be the names to start...throw in a wild card like Cowher...and my personal choice who ive been touting for months...Mora.
Mora, Franklin and Art Briles have been my personal favorites for a while.

Why the #### would Harbaugh be interested? What are these people smoking?
It's all about timing...catch a big name who's not happy with his situation...management issues, family issues, realizes he prefers coaching amateurs....etc.

I really don't get CFB. So much drama and hand wringing over this. It's like picking a new pope.
Interesting comment since once of Texas' big boosters said just this week that the Longhorns had all the money that wasnt currently being held at the Vatican.

Good Sunday morning chuckle from the UT boards, who have brought up the possibility of the Harbaugh BROTHERS taking over for Mack.

We should link them to the Houston rockets forum i frequent. Over there they are discussing the VERY REAL possibility that Lebron and Bosh are planning to sign with the rockets this offseason.

As for Texas, I think David shaw will be the name you start hearing soon. They aren't going after briles because the mere chance that he would turn them down would be too much. I think it will be shaw.

Here's Schad's list...hadn't thought about Dabo:

JImbo Fisher, Gus Malzahn, Jim Mora Jr, Dabo Swinney, Mark Dantonio, Charlie Strong, James Franklin and David Shaw

That list is terrible. The first three guys aren't going anywhere, Morris is the more likely Clemson hire than swinney, dantonio mayne, strong isn't leaving Louisville. That's a "here are some good coaches!" List

Morris is too inexperienced. We'll hear some talk about them targeting 'proven winners'.

I still don't get why they pushed him out with nobody to introduce right away? Seems that this would disrupt recruiting quite a bit, and cause needless distractions.

A lot of the donor community wanted blood. And they weren't going to have Major Applewhite or Gregg Robinson coach the bowl game. Making no decision and letting them go get curb stomped by Oregon in SA would have been an even worse result as then they would have had to "FIRE" him, which is not deserved. I actually think this is probably the best path out of it for everyone. I don't think there is any coaching candidate that they would be interested in that is somehow available now but won't be available in three weeks.

I still think the early buzz will be David Shaw. I think James Franklin would be a huge mistake. I think Bobby Petrino would get them winning right away but there is no chance on earth he gets the gig. I think Briles won't be discussed at all. And I think ultimately Al Golden will be the hire.

Does the LHN hurt or help the coach search? Sure the extra $ is nice, but it also may require a CEO vs. Xs and Os type.

Its a very CEO-ish job, which is one of the reasons that people around here never thought Chris Peterson would be a good choice. For some reason the talkers imagine that the coach must be a more executive type that hobnobs with alums and hosts a TV show compared to a guy that actually coaches. I'm not sure why a coach can't do both, but I do think that Texas fans are going to soon learn how much Mack did for the school's coffers when the new guy comes in and falls short.

It's possible to find a coach who is both...but they're rare.

I don't know Shaw personally or anything, and obviously Texas is a better football job than Stanford, but why do you think Shaw would be interested?

He's a California native (San Diego and then Bay Area), Stanford graduate and Stanford can pay him plenty (not Texas plenty, but more than enough). He might really want the Texas job for all I know, but Shaw and Stanford seem like a perfect match. He played football, basketball and ran track at Stanford.

I could be wrong, but it just seems like that's the college job he'd covet and stay at until he leaves for the NFL.

As an aside, many Stanford fans weren't real happy with him this year and think his play-calling lost them the Southern Cal and Utah games this year.

Is Lane Kiffin available?
No, he's an offensive consultant with Alabama now.
One think Lane and Saban have in common is that they were both perceived as failures on the NFL level due to them being forced to play QBs they didn't want. Culpeper & Jamarcus. Maybe Saban feels for Kiff a little.

Burton is adamant that Texas is going to pursue Harbaugh, Fisher, Malzahn, and Meyer first...then will go to Plan B if needed.

He also says that Shaw will not leave Stanford for another college job.

My guys at UT are telling me this is the most current / realistic list:

Lane Kiffin

Wade Phillips

Gary Kubiak

RC Slocum

Dave Campo

Bo Pelini

Ken Norton Jr

Mike Singletary

Cliff Kingsbury

If Harbaugh didn't take the Michigan job, he's not taking the Texas job. Meyer doesn't seem logical for him, Fisher and Malzahn don't seem logical because they're not leaving before the BCSNCG (not sure Texas would wait that long)

So on to Plan B!!!!

They seem to be OK waiting...assuming recruits will not bail due to the assumption they'll spend a lot of money to make a great hire, so the program will be headed up. So just having a month prior to NSD would be doable.

Update from Burton:

- no truth to Morts report of McCarthy, Carroll, or Kelly

- Mora was rumored to be meeting with someone regarding Texas last night...not true.

- Mora apparently did tell a HS coach last week that UT was the best job in football

- neither Malzahn or Fisher have signed their extension

Also the Vegas odds for Strong jumped up considerably overnight.
