KIRKLAND, Wash. -- Seattle's longtime fullback Mack Strong has a neck injury that will end his career.

Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren said Monday that Strong woke up Sunday feeling tingling in his hands. After getting hit hard twice early in Sunday's loss to Pittsburgh, Strong felt his hand and arm going numb, Holmgren said.

An examination determined he has a pinched nerve in his neck. It won't require surgery, but Strong told reporters at Seahawks headquarters here that it will end his career.

The two-time Pro Bowler turned 36 this month, and has spent 15 seasons with the Seahawks.

Holmgren also said wide receiver and former Super Bowl MVP Deion Branch will miss two games because of a foot sprain. He hopes to have Branch back for the Nov. 4 game at Cleveland after the Seahawks' bye week.

HOW BADLY DOES THIS AFFECT ALEXANDER?

I can't imagine what he's going through right now. That's got to be the scariest kind of injury, and then to suddenly realize it's all over, and you'll never play again. One of the really good, tough players. All the best in the back 9, Mack.

As a nonpartisan observer...how long has Strong blocked for SA? WHo is his replacement? And on a general note, how many true fullback blocking schemes are there in the NFL? It seems, if I understand correctly, that the true full back is a dying breed-- Strong and Neal come to mind. I think most teams now are going to the H back, Alstott role.

Now, as for value shot to SA, does anyone really know? I would imagine some homers would really be able to give us a good idea of how they have seen SA play when Strong is not in there, how many times that has happened, etc.

Just my two cents.

SA sucks anyways
Quality material here, as always. Useless post and an insult to anyone with a brain.
I have to agree. I mentioned The Scientist yesterday as a member of the rational and objective Seahawk fan base that populates these boards. My apologies. Doc Detroit, Proninja, and Mad Sweeney are much better representatives.
Just search for The Scientist and Alexander. You will see my many opinions on SA. I just felt like I would sum it up in under 5 words. Easy on the eyes.

Thanks for the ups, but I agree a lot with Scientist on this. I was on record as SA being a good but not great back behind an insane line and that once he got his payday he would be near useless. Only in his 2 contract years was he a worthy back. Every single player that touched the football this weekend in football, college or pro, ran the ball harder than SA has the last 2 weeks. And that includes punters. He not only can't make something from nothing, he can turn nothing into less. He plays with no heart, no guts and no drive. His feet stop before contact, he scruches up his shoulders and drops to the ground as soon as he sees no gaping hole. I watch every single RB and get jealous of that team. To see him get the glory while a man's man blocking for him, Strong pulls in his 1.5 mil a year and doesn't get to the ProBowl for 12 years makes me sick. Strong was an undrafted FA and turned himself into one of the best FBs of the modern era, blocking for 1000 yarders the OG Curt Warner, John L Williams, Chris Warren, Ricky Watters and primadonna Shaun Crumpler. One of the best Seahawks ever, gave it all every down and did it without complaint. We'll miss him, hopefully he stays around the team to provide his vast leadership.

I share the opinion that Alexander is beyond done. My exception with Scientist is his consistent lack of tact. In the other thread I was trying to defend the Seahawk fans on this board when it was mentioned that many were whiners and complainers (Super Bowl XL). I pointed out that it wasn't true around this board. Scientist would be the exception to that.

:) He was a very hard working player who opened a lot of holes and occasionally got an important first down. One of my favorite players for sure.

Thanks. Also Seahawk 17 is the man but he hasn't been around this year which makes me sad. The injury doesn't hurt Alexander though. Like Mad Sweeney said he just doesn't run hard and he needs space to be effective. A lot has been made of the line and losing the best guard in football in Steve Hutchinson hurts, the line this year has gelled and is playing well. This was evident in the Tampa game and will be from here on out when the Seahawks get a ten point lead in the second half. But Alexander isn't going to find a hole to hit if he comes off the ball so slowly and Weaver who will replace Strong, even if he is an improvement won't help Alexander's numbers. He isn't gonna hurt them either. What the Seahawks need is a RB to challenge SA for playing time and maybe light a fire under SA's ### but that probably isn't gonna happen this year. Alexander not running well also hurts Hasselbeck and really the entire offense.

Now this affects SA even longer since Strong has decided to retire according to rotoworld. I wonder what benefit there is to retiring vs going on IR for him.
