MA-D Round 4: Candlebox
History
Candlebox is placed into that 2nd tier of Seattle-area 90s grunge acts. Led by singer Kevin Martin, the original lineup (guitarist Peter Klatt, bassist Bardi Martin, and drummer Scott Mercado) produced a phenomenal debut album in 1993, also named Candlebox that finished 4xPlatinum and had three songs that hit the Top 10 in the Mainstream.
Of course, life past that first album may be fairly unknown to many of you. If not then, then almost certainly their career arc after 1995’s Lucy and 1998’s Happy Pills. Mercado left the band between those albums (replaced by Dave Krusen very briefly) and Bardi Martin left to earn a law degree in 1999. Not too long after, Candlebox was disbanded, and there was a chance that this was the end of their story.
In 2006, Rhino released a “Best Of” album for Candlebox, which prompted the (original) band to come together again, adding Sean Hennesy on rhythm guitar. The five would only be together briefly, as Bardi Martin left again to continue his education, replaced by Adam Kury. After a few delays, Into the Sun was released in 2008, exactly 10 years and 1 day after their previous album.
Thanks to tours and side projects, it would be a few years before we heard from them again. In 2012, they released Love Stories & Other Musings, featuring 9 original songs and 5 re-recordings of some of their biggest hits. Naturally, only the former was considered for this countdown. This time, between albums the band split ways with its label. Klatt and Mercado left again to focus on the band Lotus Crush, though the parting was seen as mutual. Hennesy also left, meaning two new members plus Krusen returning on drums.
Eventually things clicked enough, paving the way for 2016’s Disappearing in Airports. A live version of (mostly) that album followed later in the year. The original lineup did a “one-off” reunion in 2018 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Candlebox. For 2021’s Wolves the lineup was Kevin Martin, Kury, Brian Quinn on lead guitar, Island Styles on rhythm guitar, and Robin Diaz on drums. Diaz left afterwards, replaced by BJ Kerwin. That stayed for what the band have called their final album (thanks to lack of support and the cost of touring, according to Kevin), The Long Goodbye, released in 2023. This was followed in June of this year by A Little Longer Goodbye, with the 10 songs from The Long Goodbye, 2 new live versions of songs from that, and 3 new tracks. Currently they’re still touring, but from what I can tell, only a few dates remain.
Style
Though there’s certainly grunge in their catalog – especially early on – overall they fit more comfortably into hard rock. Naturally, there’s a wide array of influences here too. Blues, alt-rock, even a little glam. There are tracks that’ll definitely remind you of other bands. A few should make you wonder if I’ve snuck in another band until Candlebox goes their own way with the song. I’ll still say that their first album was strongest from top to bottom (and thus will have the most representation), but I’m looking forward to showing you some songs you had no idea existed. I’ll get to the full breakdown when I submit (hopefully today, but looking more likely to be Wednesday), though as a teaser I’ll say I’m planning on 32 tracks. You’ll see what I mean.

Whereas Annie Lennox only has one cover that I included, despite having three albums of covers. I just didn't care for any of them. They didn't seem to add anything to the originals, much to my surprise. I must have been channeling my inner KP.Oh, and both my playlists have a cover!
I listened to your last 5 out and yeah, probably not going to like Lord HuronHe has posted he doesn't like folky/singer-songwriter stuff much. Just joking with him (and seeing if people read posts).“At least RW will have the Journey playlist.”

Damn - this might have been top 10 for me. That solo...Triumph list in. Here are the Last 5 Out:
33. All the Way
Album: Never Surrender (Canada 1982, US 1983)
Writers: Rik Emmett, Mike Levine and Gil Moore
Lead vocals: Rik Emmett
Chart History: US Mainstream Rock #2
Video?: No
Lyrical category: Inspirational/hockey coach
All the Way charted higher on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart (known at the time as Top Rock Tracks) than any other Triumph song, but its popularity must have varied greatly by market. It did not have a video and the FM stations in Philly didn't play it, so I never heard it until I got Never Surrender on cassette.
But I can see why it caught on elsewhere. The riffs come hard and fast, the chorus is instantly memorable, and Rik Emmett's guitar solo boasts some really fast fretwork. And it may be the only track on Never Surrender that doesn't have any bitterness in its lyrics.
Despite its chart success, All the Way was rarely played live (only a handful of appearances on the Never Surrender tour) and does not appear on any of Triumph's compilation albums, so the band does not seem to consider it one of their greatest hits.

The covers on the first two albums are mostly awesome. As is the one they recorded in 1972 but didn't release in the US until 1975.My Yes list has FOUR covers.

That IS an amazing solo. But there is plenty more where that came from in the top 31.Damn - this might have been top 10 for me. That solo...Triumph list in. Here are the Last 5 Out:

I’ll try - if I limit it up until Saturday Night Fever, maybe I can put something together. Just don’t want to throw something out there without doing sufficient due diligence. No promises though despite Zegras threatening to paddle me.I might have to defer this until the next one. Zazale is my son. I'm going to let him do a little theme here because he said he doubt he could get 31 songs from one artist and I want to hear these LOL.
I am seriously working on a metal version of some sort.Which round will be the all @KarmaPolice round? And how many playlists will it be?

My Built to Spill playlist has 2 covers and technically they’re “semi-covers”.I have two covers on my list - one at 30 and another at 9. One I didn't know was a cover the first time I heard it.

I expected that one to be on your list for sure, but can understand eliminating it due to the length. It's awesome though, no question.I didn’t select their great cover of Neil Young for this list because I did that for the covers draft from a few months ago and because it’s 21 minutes long.

OK it's on - just need to narrow down to 31. May not be my best work, but I think it will be a good representation of the Bee Gees' 1966-1979 eras.I’ll try - if I limit it up until Saturday Night Fever, maybe I can put something together. Seriously, I hope you can find time.
You’re doing El-P / Run the Jewels right? I’d be looking forward to that for sure. Love me some RTj.I’ve been side-eyeing this. I don’t know if I’ll be able to do it, but I’ll certainly follow along a bit. I just don’t know if I am going to have the time I want to dedicate to listening at least to a bunch of songs from each artist. I also don’t know how cogent or coherent my own list is. I keep changing it and I’m not even sure what to say about the artist to our demographic.
Oh well, if it’s there it’s there and if it isn’t you all have been spared the boom-bap of electronica rap. Peace.

After another listen I've re-ranked my list. Overthinking this for sure... but its set now. stummbled across this cool video on youtube of R.E.M. on Letterman in 1983 playing Radio Free Europe and a song so new it didnt even have a name yet (So. Central Rain) If you have not seen it... Its pretty cool nostalgia.R.E.M. list is in... I'm not even sure I like my rankings... but it is done. Should lead to some good debate!
I think Maia and the Parliament Funkadelic can work well together, as Maia’s got some funk to some of his songs. This should be a fun trio for those that listen in order
