MA-D Round 4: Candlebox

History

Candlebox is placed into that 2nd tier of Seattle-area 90s grunge acts. Led by singer Kevin Martin, the original lineup (guitarist Peter Klatt, bassist Bardi Martin, and drummer Scott Mercado) produced a phenomenal debut album in 1993, also named Candlebox that finished 4xPlatinum and had three songs that hit the Top 10 in the Mainstream.

Of course, life past that first album may be fairly unknown to many of you. If not then, then almost certainly their career arc after 1995’s Lucy and 1998’s Happy Pills. Mercado left the band between those albums (replaced by Dave Krusen very briefly) and Bardi Martin left to earn a law degree in 1999. Not too long after, Candlebox was disbanded, and there was a chance that this was the end of their story.

In 2006, Rhino released a “Best Of” album for Candlebox, which prompted the (original) band to come together again, adding Sean Hennesy on rhythm guitar. The five would only be together briefly, as Bardi Martin left again to continue his education, replaced by Adam Kury. After a few delays, Into the Sun was released in 2008, exactly 10 years and 1 day after their previous album.

Thanks to tours and side projects, it would be a few years before we heard from them again. In 2012, they released Love Stories & Other Musings, featuring 9 original songs and 5 re-recordings of some of their biggest hits. Naturally, only the former was considered for this countdown. This time, between albums the band split ways with its label. Klatt and Mercado left again to focus on the band Lotus Crush, though the parting was seen as mutual. Hennesy also left, meaning two new members plus Krusen returning on drums.

Eventually things clicked enough, paving the way for 2016’s Disappearing in Airports. A live version of (mostly) that album followed later in the year. The original lineup did a “one-off” reunion in 2018 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Candlebox. For 2021’s Wolves the lineup was Kevin Martin, Kury, Brian Quinn on lead guitar, Island Styles on rhythm guitar, and Robin Diaz on drums. Diaz left afterwards, replaced by BJ Kerwin. That stayed for what the band have called their final album (thanks to lack of support and the cost of touring, according to Kevin), The Long Goodbye, released in 2023. This was followed in June of this year by A Little Longer Goodbye, with the 10 songs from The Long Goodbye, 2 new live versions of songs from that, and 3 new tracks. Currently they’re still touring, but from what I can tell, only a few dates remain.

Style
Though there’s certainly grunge in their catalog – especially early on – overall they fit more comfortably into hard rock. Naturally, there’s a wide array of influences here too. Blues, alt-rock, even a little glam. There are tracks that’ll definitely remind you of other bands. A few should make you wonder if I’ve snuck in another band until Candlebox goes their own way with the song. I’ll still say that their first album was strongest from top to bottom (and thus will have the most representation), but I’m looking forward to showing you some songs you had no idea existed. I’ll get to the full breakdown when I submit (hopefully today, but looking more likely to be Wednesday), though as a teaser I’ll say I’m planning on 32 tracks. You’ll see what I mean.

Candlebox were the halftime entertainment at the Thursday night 49ers-Seahawks game

ETA: better-ish video with worse sound

Tim Maia is submitted. As I mentioned in my intro, I did start at the bottom of the countdown with a couple of his English songs to try to ease into him. It will then be a mix of both Portuguese and English songs. I also favored his soul songs over some of the disco songs, but will still be some of those.

I won’t post a full last five out, but will post a couple to give a feel.

Lamento - The title translates to “I’m sorry.” Lyrics are about a woman who left him and feeling of loneliness. I left this one out for a reason that will indicate at the relevant spot in the countdown, but do think the sounds are among my favorite of his.

O Descobridor dos Sete Mares - I mentioned that I did not favor his disco songs in my selections, but this is one of his more famous disco/dance songs. YouTube link is to a live performance of this song by him.

Bonus: Not a Tim Maia song, and not really a last five out for him. But thought I’d share Jorge Ben Jor’s W/Brasil, which is his tribute song to Tim Maia.

“At least RW will have the Journey playlist.”

RW doesn’t like Lord Huron?
He has posted he doesn't like folky/singer-songwriter stuff much. Just joking with him (and seeing if people read posts).
I listened to your last 5 out and yeah, probably not going to like Lord Huron
Looking at the list maybe there is 3-4 that might grab you, probably from Strange Trails or Vide Noir.

8 covers here. Song 31, then later on there are seven in a row “themed”. 🎄
That might be a lot but I think they’re different enough from the originals and make great additions to anyone’s music library.
FWIW, they’re all among my daughter’s preferred music to listen to while we’re playing cards or a puzzle.

The Pretty Reckless
Last 4 out and an oops.

This song is the oops as it should be in my list at 25.
Cold Blooded

This song was written for and to Taylors friend and producer Kato Khandwala who died in a 2018 motorcycle crash.
Harley Darling

The first single to be released by the band. Was played during the credits of the movie Kick *** and on TV in episodes of Gossip Girl,The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural.

Zazale is my son. I'm going to let him do a little theme here because he said he doubt he could get 31 songs from one artist and I want to hear these LOL.

Triumph list in. Here are the Last 5 Out:

33. All the Way
Album: Never Surrender (Canada 1982, US 1983)
Writers: Rik Emmett, Mike Levine and Gil Moore
Lead vocals: Rik Emmett
Chart History: US Mainstream Rock #2
Video?: No
Lyrical category: Inspirational/hockey coach

All the Way charted higher on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart (known at the time as Top Rock Tracks) than any other Triumph song, but its popularity must have varied greatly by market. It did not have a video and the FM stations in Philly didn't play it, so I never heard it until I got Never Surrender on cassette.

But I can see why it caught on elsewhere. The riffs come hard and fast, the chorus is instantly memorable, and Rik Emmett's guitar solo boasts some really fast fretwork. And it may be the only track on Never Surrender that doesn't have any bitterness in its lyrics.

Despite its chart success, All the Way was rarely played live (only a handful of appearances on the Never Surrender tour) and does not appear on any of Triumph's compilation albums, so the band does not seem to consider it one of their greatest hits.

Damn - this might have been top 10 for me. That solo...

That IS an amazing solo. But there is plenty more where that came from in the top 31.

I did say that I have like 40 Triumph songs in my top 10.

I might have to defer this until the next one. Up until today have been really swamped with work - may have some time the rest of this week but not sure. Will let you know by the end of the week.

Oh noooooooo!!!! This is the one I was most excited about!

But then again, given my general lack of participation in these threads recently, I can't complain.

I’ll try - if I limit it up until Saturday Night Fever, maybe I can put something together. Just don’t want to throw something out there without doing sufficient due diligence. No promises though despite Zegras threatening to paddle me.

Ahhh, just take your time and do it next time if need be. It will be fun!

We have 28. Room for more if anyone wants to jump in. Just need your list on the form by Sunday, 11am MT. 1pm ET
I do have 3 more playlists that are completed. ;)

Well 4, but I don't think y'all would appreciate King Diamond making an appearance in this format.

Still working on it. I think I have nailed down my top 41 songs, but still nailing down the order...

I’ve been side-eyeing this. I don’t know if I’ll be able to do it, but I’ll certainly follow along a bit. I just don’t know if I am going to have the time I want to dedicate to listening at least to a bunch of songs from each artist. I also don’t know how cogent or coherent my own list is. I keep changing it and I’m not even sure what to say about the artist to our demographic.

Oh well, if it’s there it’s there and if it isn’t you all have been spared the boom-bap of electronica rap. Peace.

Seriously, I hope you can find time.

OK it's on - just need to narrow down to 31. May not be my best work, but I think it will be a good representation of the Bee Gees' 1966-1979 eras.

R.E.M. list is in... I'm not even sure I like my rankings... but it is done. Should lead to some good debate!
After another listen I've re-ranked my list. Overthinking this for sure... but its set now. stummbled across this cool video on youtube of R.E.M. on Letterman in 1983 playing Radio Free Europe and a song so new it didnt even have a name yet (So. Central Rain) If you have not seen it... Its pretty cool nostalgia.

REM on Letterman

There's nothing wrong with not getting your list the exact way you want it, but think about this.... right now, I have ONE list in chronological order, and TWO lists "some other way" . I bet if nothing was said about those in advance, and I started posting the countdown, no one could figure out which artist it is on those three lists, because we all have different music tastes.

Last round, I didn't have much time to make my list. I have two in the 20's that would be in top 10 now. So what? Who cares? There are too may artists to remember anyone's order in the long run.

I never have time to do many writeups and I suck at writing anyways. So what! I do greatly appreciate all of you with 100x more music knowledge than I have.

If you don't have enough time. So what! Post your 31 songs. We aren't going to enjoy your list any less. I just want to hear a lot of new, good music. That's the goal here.

I'm not ranting on anyone in particular. here, and I get that we all would like to have our lists as perfect as possible, but just posting them is more important IMO.

OK, because I know he can take it, I would love to hear the Doobie Brothers. Heck, just take there top 40 songs, throw them in a randomizer and post the Top 31 that come out. I just want to doobie to them LOL.

Haha, that just gave me an idea... you give me your top 31 and I randomize all your 1-31 lists and I post that way.
