World Leader Pretend- R.E.M.
“World Leader Pretend” was the first R.E.M. song to have its lyrics printed in an album booklet. Which highlighted just how damn good R.E.M. was lyrically.
Star 69- R.E.M.

Imitation of life- R.E.M.
“Imitation Of Life” was the lead single for the album Reveal. Its a great song and really amazing that it was so good that late in the game (2001) for the band.
7 Chinese Bros.- R.E.M.
Stipe revealed during a 2008 interview that “7 Chinese Brothers” was about him breaking up a couple and proceeding to have relationships with both parties afterward, which was a bit of a shocker to anyone who’d long loved the song.

Finally, just want to say that I was only 9 when murmur came out so I don't have that visceral connection to the earlier stuff that some of you might have and that might reflect more in my rankings. But I've really loved listening to and reconnecting with R.E.M. the past few weeks.
Also, in full transparency... "Shiny Happy People" will NOT be on my list. I loathe that song lol.

I saw R.E.M. as an opening act (for The Suburbs) in 1982 and a couple of other times. All took place before the release of Reckoning. Mike Mills was also on-stage for part in that weird Jim Irsay show I saw a few years back. He sang "Superman" and played bass for some other artists.
I've always loved the band's entire catalog but the early stuff hits a little harder because I was young (I'm month younger than Stipe) and impressionable. Looking forward to see how you've done the impossible cutting it down to 31.

Piggybacking off the above idea I plucked out a song from their newest albums with the newest singer. I like that they didn't just try to find another Perry clone. I also like that I got hints of Queensrÿche, but now we are talking maybe 2 decades to late as far as what their sound is. Still, the albums were better than expected just not near good enough to make the cut for the 31. I think of the initial 80 only about 6-7 were from this era compared to the 50 from the first 5 albums.

As a fan, I can only imagine how challenging this list was. Like you, I don't have a super strong connection with the very early stuff. I love Imitation of Life, but I can see that being on the cusp. Shiny Happy People does not exist in my world.

I was into R.E.M. from ~85 until the Shiny Happy People/Everybody Hurts era, though I do like Stand. Sorry to hear 7 Chines Bros. didn't make the cut.
My favorite/only R.E.M. story was the one and only time I saw them in concert. I went with one of my closer friends and his girlfriend. Our seats were behind a pillar so they moved us down to the floor. My friend kept getting mad because the people in front of us were standing on their seats and blocking our view of the stage, so that his girlfriend had to keep calming him down. Now, he wasn't normally wound up so tight, so I attributed it to him being overprotective of his GF. He confessed to me years later that he had dropped acid that night and was actually tripping at the time.

In 2013 I did an R.E.M. song draft on another board and took Star 69 and Imitation of Life.
One drafter ranked Shiny Happy People as his 4th favorite R.E.M. song but waited until the 4th round to pick it because he figured no one else would have it anywhere near that high (Binky: low).
What I said when the pick was made:
There was another well-known song from the same album that went undrafted.

As previously mentioned, my Johnny Marr list is three lists in one: his top eleven solo songs plus top tens from The Smiths and Marr's other collaborations. They'll be counted down in rotation starting and ending with Johnny solo.
He's a fantastic guitarist with a distinctive style that I hope you'll come to recognize in the weeks ahead. But I think the collaborations are the thing that makes Marr's career so special. He's the consummate sideman who's been a member of more bands than just about anyone. The two contenders I thought of off the top of my head were Clapton and Aynsley Dunbar but Johnny has them both beaten.
While you can easily hear his contributions on guitar, it's harder to quantify what Johnny brings to the creative process of a group. Time and time again, he's helped to light a spark in the studio or rehearsal room. Maybe it's a riff, a rhythm or a chord progression or maybe his key contribution is a non-musical vibe but whatever it is, it's helped him enjoy a long career playing with great artists and few very burned bridges.
So my last/first five are all Johnny Marr collaborations that didn't make the final list (in chronological order)
Pretenders - "The Windows of the World" (1988)
Johnny's first gig after the Smiths broke up was to replace Robbie McIntosh in The Pretenders. He joined them in 1987 opening for U2 but Chrissie Hynde put the band on hiatus after the tour. Marr only played about a dozen shows with the band but says he learned one important lesson from Hynde in that brief time, namely that his job is to make the singer look good. The only released recording from that period is this cover of a Burt Bacharach-Hal David song.
Bryan Ferry - "The Right Stuff" (1988)
"The Right Stuff" is adapted from The Smiths' instrumental "Money Changes Everything" which was written by Marr. He also plays guitar on the track. The way he tells it, he wasn't supposed to appear on the record but the guitarist from Ferry's band couldn't play the part correctly so the producers called him. He hung around to play a few shows with Ferry including his appearance on SNL.
Kirsty MacColl - "No Victims (Guitar Heroes Mix) (1989)
Marr was good friends with with English singer/songwriter Kirsty MacColl and worked with her on a number of occasions. We'll hear from MacColl later but I wanted to squeeze in this mostly-instrumental outtake featurning Johnny and David Gilmour on guitars.

Edwyn Collins - "Come Tomorrow, Come Today" (2010)
Collins was the singer and primary songwriter for pioneering Glasgow post-punk band Orange Juice whose jangly guitar sound was an influence on The Smiths. Marr returns the favor co-writing and playing on this inspirational song celebrating Collins comeback' from a near-fatal aneurysm.
Noel Gallagher & High Flying Birds - "Pretty Boy" (2023)
Marr and the Gallagher brothers bonded over their mutual love of Manchester City in the 90s and he guested on a couple of Oasis songs. This song is from Noel Gallagher's most recent solo album. Marr's characteristically understated guitar part elevates a one-groove song into one of Noel's best post-Oasis efforts.

Morrissey has gone on to have a strong solo career with a number of fine guitarists and co-writers: Vini Reilly is a Manchester legend (and an influence on Marr) and Mozza's bands with Boz Boorer and Alain Whyte were particularly productive.
@titusbramble can differ if he ever does his rankings but I still think his time in the Smiths was Morrissey's career zenith. The same is probably true for Johnny as well but we'll leave that on the table for the purposes of this project.
