MAD - Artist - Round 4 - Taking New Artists Never Used before. Deadline 10/13/24 for new artists, 10/20/24 11am MT for song list submission (16 Viewers)

As mentioned, going with The Bee Gees this round.
It’ll be interesting to see how you do this. Goodness knows, they have enough good songs for at least two lists. I don’t envy you whittling this one down (not a euphemism).
It's not going to be easy and will take some research. I'm sure there will be a lot from column A and a lot from column B. I'm sure I'll wind up leaving out several doozies.

As I posted in the other thread I will be taking us on a Journey for Part 4.

This is a band I knew about as much about as I did Oingo Boingo. Actually less, and I am fresher to the material as surprising as that might be for our age demographic. I actively avoided them due to the overplaying factor, especially the slower hits. Before about January of 2024 I thought: Steve Perry was always in the band before the 00s, I did not like their music, and until this summer I had not listened to a Journey album that had Perry as the singer.

As I posted, I fell hard for them so in that sense I as excited to do this one as I was Oingo. I also know people besides me are way more familiar with them and their songs, so we will see what the opinions are about the final product. I am down to 48 songs, and that was a huge struggle. There is just one song left from the 90s album, and nothing past that. I have a feeling this will be all 70s/80s Journey for the main 31 with a heavy 70s lean. 🎧 :headbang:

Why Whitney Houston?

If I were to say I have a favorite shirt that I keep on a special hanger in my closet, yet you never see me wear it, you may think I'm either lying about having that shirt, or I'm lying when I say it's my favorite. In a like manner, I have consistently said for at least 30 years that I think Whitney Houston's singing voice is my favorite female voice, and arguably the best I've heard regardless of gender, yet I own none of her albums and never saw her perform live, so you may wonder if she really means that much to me after all. I believe a big part of the reason for this dichotomy is that for as much as I love her voice, I didn't connect very strongly with the style of her songs and thus was never compelled to delve deeper into her catalog. I regret feeling that way, as I sold myself short by believing I didn't have room for genres that were outside of my comfort zone; plus, her voice alone demanded more investment on my part. Choosing her for my next artist is a small effort to atone for that past sin and exorcise yet another demon.

kupcho1Clash
First of all, it's The Clash (think: The Layer Cake, The Facebook). Let's get it right.

Their own site says it best:
Formed in 1976 in the vanguard of British punk, The Clash would soon become the most iconic rock band of their era, a symbol of intelligent protest and stylish rebellion in the turbulent years of the late ’70s and early ’80s. Just as importantly, they were to become unflinching musical pioneers, integrating first militant reggae, then dub, funk, jazz and hip hop into their music, which has helped to make them one of the most respected and sampled bands by modern DJs and dance musicians.

I guess no new frontiers for zegras.

I might have to pull the plug on this.
Most are right, its better suited to a themed draft. But no one has stepped up to run one.

Theres more than 31 great somgs that fit this theme too.
I still have thinking time and 4 other artists to call in reserve. 1 at very short notice.

Dont want to cause zegras any fuss. Give me a few days to think.

Bee Gees had so many phases to their career.
From Spicks and Specks as their starting point in Australia, through the depressing lates 60s stuff. Stumbling into disco and then their post Disco stuff.

I would have considered splitting it into “up to 1973” and next time “post 1973”

The discipline and strength to chop this to 31 will be tough. Good luck

Olivia Newton-John would be a fascinating one to do as well.

This isn’t fighting world hunger or anything that really matters but this is an “artists” countdown not a theme countdown - and the idea is 31 songs from same artist, not songs related by some random happenstance.
Just my .02

Was going to set this round out but what the hell.... Give me R.E.M.
I do have a list for them as well - so very interested to see how we match up (or don't).
Going to do my best not to be oversaturated with songs from Monster. It was in heavy rotation in my college years and honestly one of my favorite albums of all time
Was also in consideration for me. Will definitely be interesting to see your list as I feel quite a few of their post-Monster albums are underrated.

You mean you didn't do that on purpose? I thought you were very clever.

Lol. I thought the same thing when Eephus posted that. I figured i missed the funny pairing.

I would love to take credit for a stroke of genius, but this was like stumbling in the dark and tripping over a gold bar.
It didnt even register until Eephus posted it. Thats how unaware i was.
But its so funny.

And with that, Batman leaves us. There’s a few who dont like it. Publicly anyway. Im sure others privately are wtf. Fair enough. Its more a theme thing.
To his credit zegras isnt precious and accepted the idea wholeheartedly. I cant therefore have him in a position to have Batman be a negative on the draft.
Artist choice replacing Batman is Robyn

If we dont get to 35, I will add another unnamed artist closer to the deadline.
