A man attending the Bears-Eagles game died after falling 50 feet inside Soldier Field on Sunday, according to Chicago media reports.

The 27-year-old man, who had not been identified Sunday night, landed on a roof inside in the stadium. His fall occurred about 4:55 p.m. Central time, during the game.

He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead within a half-hour.

It wasn’t immediately clear what caused his fall. Police are investigating the incident.

The Sunday night pregame stuff made it sound like he fell from the upper deck down to the street ... really sad scenario

"Witnesses told emergency personnel that they saw the man run up to a ledge and jump."

Possible suicide?
When Three Rivers Stadium first opened there was a kid that died from trying to jump from one ramp to another. The Pirates & Steelers never anticipated that anyone would try this but they installed fences on top of the ramp railings to prevent it from happening in the future. Maybe it was someting similar? I've never been to Soldier Field so I don't know...

The report from Flanagan last night was that the kid fell from the upperdeck. We then hear that it was a 50 foot plunge. The article in the Chicago paper says 35 feet.

He must have landed on his head. 35 feet isn't that high.

One quote from the paper that had me...

"He was a skilled climber who enjoyed scaling up the side of buildings and trees."

It isn't? That's basically falling off a 3 story building. It certainly won't kill everyone every time, but that's plenty high to sustain life threatening injuries without landing directly on your head.

Sad story but I'm going to guess there was some alcohol involved.

I realize stadiums don't get built with the hope some moron will throw himself off the ledge for whatever idiotic reason, but I'm shocked this kind of thing doesn't happen more often. There are a lot of "daredevils", morons, and drunkards out there and most stadiums I've been to have nothing in the way of a railing to stop these tragedies.

I guess you could chalk it all up to Darwinism but it'd be easier if we just put some barriers along the back walls.

3 basketball hoops high plus a little extra. Maybe equates to a standard roof height of a two story house...?Still, doesn't seem high enough to result in death. He must have landed on his head/neck which tells me that something was up...most coherent individuals would try to break their fall from any distance.

:) Easily high enough to result in death. Probably would result in death more often than not. You ar sadly mistaken.

People sometimes do crazy things at games. At a Michigan State game about 15 years ago, on the upper tier, two guys thought it was funny to pick up the girl they were with and hang her by the ankles over the over the outside wall of the stadium. One, thought it would be funny to let go of the ankle he was holding. They pulled her back over but it could have ended way worse than security being called and taking them away.

Ignoring friction, a fall from 35 feet will result in impacting the ground at approximately 32 miles per hour. Do you want to stand in front of that bus?

Right, but did you take into account the roofing material he landed on? I would think its a bit more forgiving than concrete. Plus, if he used his arms to break his fall or did the old paratrooper roll, he would have been significantly injured but not killed. They say he was an experienced climber - who probably had a fall or two in his past and knew how to land. What I'm driving at is that something doesn't sound right.

Why are people arguing if the fall was high enough to kill him? He's dead, so obviously it was.
The height has alot to do with whether there was foul play involved. If he was knocked out and pushed...most heights could kill you.An experienced climber falling from 35 ft to his death just doesn't sound right to me.

Why must there be some :tinfoilhat: explanation? He got drunk and did something stupid. Sometimes the obvious answer is actually the correct answer.
