Mangenius stays (1 Viewer)

I think he should get one more year just to see what the heck he is trying to do. They weren't going anywhere this season with Winslow/Edwards so it'll be interesting to see how they rebuild.

I think they could have an 8-8 season next year but they really need to do something about the QB spot, way too much inconsistency.

 So, basically Holmgren was smart enough to see and admit everything was going well in Cleveland....He's basically saying, you guys really didn't need me.BUT.. IMO Mangeniuses greatest strength is analyzing talent and working the draft....Between Holmgren and Genius they have that down. Now they're supposedly going to hire a GM to put in the middle of all that - This part sounds crazy to me. Let the man get his groceries!!!!!

I thought if they kept Mangini they would take a hard look at bringing Weis in as OC with Quinn at QB. Does Mangini and Weis have a bad history while in New England?

A lot of optimism in this thread over this move. I don't know why.

Anything can happen in a league of parity, but an 8-8 season seems very far away.

Has to do with the late season surge I'm sure. But this team came out playing with nothing to lose when they know the franchise is about to take a new direction. That can mean that now that the players realize their jobs are in jepordy they decide they have something to motivate them to play, or they like playing for Mangini.

 Exactly my thoughts

Disagree. I think there are significant issues in marrying the Holmgren/Walsh tree/philosophy with the Mangini/Bellichick/Parcells tree/philosophy. There is a chance that it results in the creation of the uber-philosophy that combines the best of both worlds, but I think it's more likely to result in a mismatch of talent and philosophy. Like hiring a 3-4 coach to run a team with 4-3 talent, or asking a WCO coach to work within spread offense.I think this gives Holmgren an excuse for a bad season. If next year is poor, he fires Mangini, and then brings in his guy who gets to work with (presumably) a more-talented roster that he has built during that first year.

Or he coaches himself.

Holmgren is not a guy that wants or likes to sit down and watch film of college players hour after hour, day after day. That is one of the things that the GM does.

What are the chances they move to a WCO? This was the key reason I held onto Quinn so long in a 2QB league - the hope/chance he would do well in a WCO. If the OC is staying, does this mean no WCO?

I hope not. For the last forty years, people have been saying, "You have to be able to run the ball in December in Cleveland." Mangini accomplished exactly that and was successful. If the WCO is implemented, they had better be able to run it when winter hits!

The quotes a year ago, when Mangini was brought in, were all about changing the culture and the "country club" atmosphere. He has done that. They are a disciplined football team that worries about football. There is reason for optimism. That being said, they are still lacking in the talent department. Add to that the worst 2010 SOS (by my calculation)...

I disagree. He inherited his mentors team. It'll be interesting to see what Holmgren can do but, year 1 was just silly house-cleaning. Browns fans shouldn't have had to watch the team regress from one BB DC replacing his guys with another BB DC's guys.

Holmgren's former GM Ron Wolf is very tight with Parcells. There might be more common ground then it seems

The Browns won more games this year than they did last year. They also have 11 picks in the upcoming draft.

What was pointless about it? They got rid of guys that didn't want to be there and weren't going to be there for a little something. Seems like a good move to me.
