BEREA, Ohio (AP) -- Browns coach Eric Mangini has returned to his secretive ways with his starting quarterback.

Mangini said Monday that he will wait until Wednesday to announce whether Derek Anderson or Brady Quinn will start next Monday night against the Baltimore Ravens. During Cleveland's bye week, Mangini said he would reveal his starter early this week.

Mangini said he knows where he is headed on the decision but has not yet spoken to his two quarterbacks.

Anderson's 36.2 rating is last in the league. He took over as Cleveland's starter in Week 3 after Quinn, who won a long competition between the two during training camp and the exhibition season, was benched after 10 quarters.
:lmao: Not that I'm surprised, and not that anyone cares...

10 years from now, when everyone is mimicing this shark strategy, you will look back and say, MANGENIUS!!!Hey are you starting Matt Ryan or the rookie from Rutgers this week coach...

You'll find out sunday guys. THis press conference is over!

It boggles my mind why he won't give Ratliff a chance. Does he think he'll do worse than Anderson or Quinn?

Quinn wasn't that bad looking back on it.
Perhaps that's just a relative comparison to Anderson.Kinda like Gradowski looking great!
Exactly. Quinn did look that bad. He's not nicknamed Captain Checkdown for no reason. Both QB's stink. If Ratliff can't play any better than Quinn and Anderson, then I wonder why he's even on an NFL roster? Seriously, can it get any worse?

The way I figure it, he hasn't announced his starter yet because he's trying to work out a trade for Peyton Manning, but doesn't want to blow the surprise. Never mind that the trading deadline is already passed, he's looking for a loophole.

If anything, you'd think he would name his starting QB just to avoid the derisive criticism he received last time he pulled this tactic. At least the last time the commentators/fans didn't KNOW that Quinn couldn't really throw deep and Anderson couldn't throw at all.

It will be Anderson. Quinn won't start until Cleveland is safe from paying his last performance bonus.
I don't know if they were correct or not but I remember the announcers talking about that last game and they said he could start after the bye and not reach 70% of the snaps or whatever it was that he needed...

Quinn certainly isn't as bad as he has looked in 2009. He has seriously regressed, and I blame the coaching.

This article says that Quinn gets a $1.32 million bonus at 45% of the snaps, then a $5 million bonus if he hits 70%.It's no longer possible for Quinn to reach 70%, but he could still reach 45%. I guess $1.32 million is small potatoes in today's NFL, but if the team is going to lose no matter who plays QB, then they may as well save some money while they're losing. Plus, there's still time to evaluate Quinn if he plays the final 4-5 games of the season and finishes at 44.9%.

The Browns are on pace for 926 offensive snaps, which means that Quinn must play fewer than 417 snaps to avoid paying his bonus.

So far, he's played 140 snaps, which leaves him with 277.

At their current pace of 57.9 snaps per game, Quinn would reach 277 in 4.8 games.

I don't think we'll see Quinn before Week 13 unless it's an emergency situation.

to be fair to mangina, maybe he just doesn't want to say the words.

it would be hard to say something like that in front of the entire world --- "DEREK ANDERSON IS MY STARTING QUARTERBACK!!!!!"

Opposing defenses are trembling now, "Who will have to prepare for? Anderson or Quinn?" I'm sure it's keeping them up at night.

Doesn't Mangini realize that he's the only coach that does this so it makes him look like even more of a buffoon than he already is? Other coaches do it with backs and injureds players, but how many do it with their starting QB?

And I wonder if this lays any credence to the theory that the Browns were sitting Quinn because he's due a $5 mil escalator bonus if he takes 70% of the snaps? Now they can play Quinn when he doesn't have a mathmatical possibility of reaching 70%. Seems like he still would have a possibility, though.

someone who knows more or has more time, what chance does quinn have at hitting 70% of the snaps (i think that is the number) if he plays the rest of the season?

If my math is correctif he plays all of the snaps, round up he'll be around 60870% of 926 is 648so, this REALLY seems like they held him out just long enough to ensure he cannot hit 70%one game earlier and he may have hit it (if he plays all the rest)

The only way he can hit 70% is if the Browns go to a no-huddle offense and run 80 offensive plays per game (which has never happened in the history of the NFL).
