Mangini questions Lions’ injuries

By TOM WITHERS, AP Sports Writer 8 minutes ago

BEREA, Ohio (AP)—Browns coach Eric Mangini is questioning whether the Detroit Lions faked injuries to slow down Cleveland’s no-huddle offense.

Mangini, who bemoaned the final, chaotic seconds of Cleveland’s 38-37 loss Sunday, noted the Lions had several players leave the field injured, only to return. Mangini was asked if he was accusing Lions coach Jim Schwartz, whom he worked with previously in Cleveland, of having his players fake injuries.

“I’m just saying there were a lot of them,” Mangini said Monday.

Mangini also feels the officials made an incorrect pass interference call at the end of the game, which gave the Lions an untimed down on the Cleveland 1-yard line. On the extra snap, Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford(notes) threw his fifth touchdown pass.
seem to be the words of a sore loser.

Does anyone know the rule about the QB being out of the pocket?

Can you hit receivers until the ball is in the air? I know there is a change to contact once he leaves the pocket.... which is his argument

Schwartz was surprised Monday when told Browns coach Eric Mangini suggested that the Lions might have faked defensive injuries in order to slow down Cleveland’s no-huddle offense.

“He’s way out of bounds on that,” Schwartz said. “That couldn’t be further from the truth. Both teams were running no huddle, and the officials did a very good job of standing over the ball, so there was no need to do that.”

And the coach was dismissive of Mangini’s claims that pass interference shouldn’t have been called at the end of the game.

“If they are saying that you can’t have pass interference because the quarterback was out of the pocket, they don’t know what they are talking about,” he said. “It’s clear. There were more flags thrown than officials, I think. They didn’t only interfere with Bryant (Johnson), they were interfering with Calvin as well.”

Lions linebackers Larry Foote(notes) and Julian Peterson(notes) both joked that the short-handed Detroit defense had too many real injuries to waste time faking more of them.

“We’ve been getting banged up all season - it doesn’t matter if teams play the no-huddle or not. I don’t know what is going on - maybe we need to drink different water,” Foote said. “Coach Mangini just needs to stop making comments about our team.”

Schwartz also said safety Ko Simpson(notes) was “highly unlikely” to play against Green Bay, and that he could miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

Whatevs...I just want to thank Mangenius for calling the time out that allowed Stafford to get back on the field and throw the winning TD (with a separated left shoulder, TYVM).

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

will someone quiet that baby down please?

The PI call was correct. The Brown DB had his back to the play and pushed the Lion WR out of the back of the endzone while the ball was in the air. A no-brainer.

does this moron really not know the definition of PI?!? Really, talking about qb being in the pocket?!? really?!? Holy moly, this is far worse than I ever expected. As a jets fan, I endured a decent amount of his stupidity, but this takes the cake. A NFL HC doesn't know the definition of PI??!?!?!??! WOW!

PS: The injury stuff really is out of bounds. That was a great game, one of the best of the season, and to dilute that with some stupid comment about faking injuries is insulting to his own players that fought hard, not to mention the other team. What a jack###. I hope he's never seen or heard from again after this year, even at the college level. I don't even want to see him as a DB coach for Monmouth college...

I would think Mangini has to realize that this will place even more scrutiny on himself. Indicates he really doesn't care what people think about him, which he probably gets from Belichick.

As a NY Homer.. I'm so glad this guy isn't controlling one of my teams anymore. He's the definition of a team cancer, he's worse then any Terrell Owens-type player. I fully believe if you inserted him as the head coach of the Colts tomorrow, he'd make them lose every game from here on out. He's just that bad and doesn't belong anywhere near an NFL sideline. I'd take Jim Zorn over this guy...

So tired of everyone blaming all bad things on Belichick. Clearly Mangini didn't pay attention in class if he's caught out saying something stupid like this to the press.

I have always wondered why more teams don't fake injuries to slow down no huddle offenses.
I seem to recall that this was tried by a few teams to slow down the Bills in the early 90's, for example, and I believe that there are penalties for that if the officials catch on. The rule that you lose a timeout in the last two minutes due to an injury stoppage comes from that era IIRC.

I thnk after you are charged all your time outs, after the second injury (after your time outs are gone) they start giving/taking 5 yards per.I could be wrong.

If you're a Vikings fan: "Hmm...maybe Mangini spent a few off-seasons studying under Packers fans in Green Bay and Milwaukee?!" ;)If you're a Packers fan: "Hmm...maybe Mangini spent a few off-seasons studying under Vikings fans in Minneapolis?!" :wolf:A little something for everybody East and West of the Mississippi/St. Croix this morning...lol.

Marv Levy actually did it first against the Bengals no-huddle in the late 80s. Levy had a lot of complaints about the no-huddle before he started using it. I don't think there's any way for refs to assess whether a player really needs to come off the field or not. They'd be getting into dangerous territory if they tried.
