Manti Te'o's girlfriend who died... (1 Viewer)

Another layer to this is that Manti went to HS with Tuiasaopo right? This wasnt a complete stranger that duped(?) him.
Who better to dupe you than someone you really trust?
Edit: They didnt go to high school together, but did apparently know each other. And Manti is not the first person this guy duped.
Te'o and Tuiasosopo definitely know each other. In May 2012, Te'o was retweeting Tuiasosopo, who had mentioned going to Hawaii. Wrote Te'o, "sole"—"bro," in Samoan—"u gotta come down." In June, Te'o wished Tuiasosopo a happy birthday. How they know each other isn't clear. We spoke to a woman we'll call Frieda, who had suggested on Twitter back in December that there was something fishy about Lennay Kekua. She was Facebook friends with Titus Tuiasosopo, so we asked her if she knew anything about Ronaiah."Manti and Ronaiah are family," she said, "or at least family friends." She told us that the Tuiasosopos had been on-field guests (of Te'o or someone else, she didn't know) for the Nov. 24 Notre Dame-USC game in Los Angeles. USC was unable to confirm this, but a tweet from Tuiasosopo's since-deleted account suggests he and Te'o did see each other on that West Coast trip. "Great night with my bro @MTeo_5! #Heisman #574L," Ronaiah tweeted on Nov. 23, the night before the game. And there was something else: Tuiasosopo had been in a car accident a month before Lennay's supposed accident. Was this Lennay Kekua? We spoke with friends and relatives of Ronaiah Tuiasosopo who asserted that Ronaiah was the man behind Lennay. He created Lennay in 2008, one source said, and Te'o wasn't the first person to have an online "relationship" with her. One mark—who had been "introduced" to Lennay by Tuiasosopo—lasted about a month before family members grew suspicious that Lennay could never be found on the telephone, and that wherever one expected Lennay to be, Ronaiah was there instead. Two sources discounted Ronaiah's stunt as a prank that only metastasized because of Te'o's rise to national celebrity this past season.
Duped? Or used an account before as cover for relationships he was pursuing?

:goodposting: Fair point.

He also claimed in an ESPN interview that he would call her every night for 4 weeks(?) while she was in the hospital and talk to her for 8 hours until they went to sleep - if I'm running a catfish scam on him thats a LOT of work to continue on a nightly basis. As people are saying above - for what High fives and yuks?
This story is all anyone is talking about. That's plenty of motivation for a group of guys to come up with a gotcha scheme.Alternatively, I think not even the perpetrators of the scheme could have imagined it going on this long. They may have thought they would mess with Manti one night or week. Next thing you know they are like "holy #### this guy is buying this?..what should we say/do next?" Then here we are.
Hire a girl to sit for 8 hours a day, talking to him on the phone? Please  the guy is full of it.
Well they didn't talk for 8 hours from what I can tell but they'd fall asleep on the phone and he'd wake up listening to her breath. I guess this should have been the first indication of a scam. Whose phone wouldn't die in 8 hours of being on a call?

The Bears need a MLB now that Urlacher is done/almost done. I really hope they don't spend a pick on this kid.
Guys have had much worse character issues than this coming out of college. This is a weird story, no doubt about it. But I don't think it's one that will affect his ability to play at the pro level.

You're nuts. I would LOVE it if the skins drafted this guy. MOre stories. MOR MOR!
Seeing him bowled over repeatedly in the National Championship game, coupled with either low intelligence, questionable character, or a propensity for dongs (NTTAWWT) does not equal the right choice for the new face of the Bears defense. Just my opinion.

Maybe he's gay and Bears are his thing.

You've got to question how much the this contributed to the hype surrounding him and his subsequent Heisman run. Without this story, he may have never been such a high prospect in the first place. Certainly his performance against Bama suggests that he will not live up to the hype at the next level.

They did not go to high school together, but the Deadspin article indicated that they were "family friends". T'eo was from Hawaii, but Tuiasosopo was from California. The earliest confirmed connection between T'eo and Tuiasosopo is December 2011.

I'm not so sure about that. Apart from the Bama game he played extremely well this season. I don't think the girlfriend story had anything to do with the Heisman push. He was the best player on a Notre Dame team that went undefeated. That's all it takes.

So what are all the main theories?1) Te'o is behind the hoax to hide his homosexuality.2) Te'o is behind the hoax to boost his Heisman chances.3) Te'o is behind the hoax as a publicity stunt.4) Te'o was catfished and was the really the victim. He made up stories about meeting her because he didn't want his friends to know he had never met her. And, after finding out he was catfished, he lied for a few weeks because he was too embarrassed to admit he was catfished.5) Te'o is literally crazy and thought this was all real. His mind created all of this.
Would make a good FFA poll. Someone set it up. I'd do it but I am too busy texting my gf she lives in canada you wouldn't know her.

Hmmmm... Without knowing their relationship and how it started, I can see Tuiasosopo using this as a ploy to get close to Te'o and around the fame he carried with him. Tuiasosopo was always there instead of Lennay for the first "mark". Maybe the same thing was true here.

so Teo is going to lay the blame for this at Touiasisopo's (sp?) feet, it sounds like. its then up to Ronniah to tell his side or maybe negotiate a decent payoff to keep quiet.can't believe so many people are buying into the 'I was duped' version from Teo. this is 2013. you're 20 years old and in a LDR with the love of your life and you never once go to visit her in person? never skype with her? they are in a hospital with leukemia and you don't go to see her one time? I realize I'm not an all-american LB for ND, but before I profess my love for someone, I'd like to know for sure that they exist. If someone keeps avoiding a face to face, you'd think he'd just move on to the next POA.

The real issue for Manti now is likely a decision over whether he wants to say he was in on it, and risk the pushback, or to come out and risk the pushback. Sadly, if this was an elaborate way to hide his sexual preference, it's a horrible reminder of how pockets of our society -- sports like football included -- are still bigoted.

If he's gay and comes out, I think this could eventually work out for him. It's only a matter of time before a current player comes out. He will be the poster boy and this story will make more sense than it does right now. I'm not sure his image can drop any lower. Maybe I'm naive.

Wait, is this the play everyone was talking about? Bowled over? I was expecting Earl Campbell or even Jacquizz Rodgers running through Earl Thomas last week. How can someone be "bowled" over when the RB isn't moving forward and it looks more like he missed his dive at the RB and Lavy was easily able step aside and push him further to the side.
Not the right play in the gif....that's TJ Yeldon. Don't know if there isn't gif of anLacy play, but here is one pic that made the Hawaii paper and upset Sr. Teo:http://www.mail.com/sports/football/1805856-teo-sees-career-with-bcs-title-game-loss.html

I think 'shed' is a better phrase than 'bowled over'.

Best case scenario in my opinion.

I'll say it again...if he comes out saying he's gay and that he used this story to cover himself, he is then the person who used a girlfriend dying of leukemia to garner sympathy. That is completely vile and would be the one way to further drop his image.

:goodposting: It would be a great way to highlight the lengths some people are forced to go to please the masses. And he would completely turn public opinion in his favor.

Hi Jason, hey do you think Barrett Jones is still going to take Manti up on that trip to Hawaii? If so, should he bring his violin?

Most likely scenario seems to be that Teo was scammed, but that he willfully embellished large parts of the relationship/story.
The "he was scammed" theory requires that you believe Te'o to be a massive idiot and to rationalize away a bunch of lies in a very precise, just-so manner and to just ignore some plot holes. The "he was in on it" theory only requires you to believe that Te'o was dishonest all along and provides a simple, all-encompassing explanation of this entire story.

It seems to me that the second theory is more likely than the first.
Occam's Razor - among competing hypotheses, the one that makes the fewest assumptions should be selected.

Especially on the same day his grandma died.

Waiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit...now Reagan Mauia says that she existed, he met her, and was very close to her!

OK, now this is making a bit more sense. I'm guessing "Reagan" is a transgendered person that became close to multiple players, and at some point ended it. And when Manti found out "she" was a "he", he felt it easier to say she died and be done with it.
Odd use of the word "now".

Doubtful. There is still the leukemia aspect.

the NFL had a transgendered player? that would be a pretty huge story I think.

was discussed in this thread last night. not really new.

There's a way to respond to the story, keep Manti's confidences, and not vouch for him the way the AD did. You say that you've investigated, that you've confirmed that there was some hoax and that you were unable to find conclusive evidence that Manti is involved. And that you view the matter as closed on your end. You don't vouch for Manti. You don't choke up.I just don't believe the guy would risk his reputation if he didn't think it checked out somehow. Which doesn't prove anything, just that his investigators found the story consistent.
Not necessarily. Swarbeck could be out there trying to "defend the dome" as it were. The story of Te'o playing his heart out after two deaths would be another great story in the pantheon of ND mythology like Rudy and "win one for the Gipper." He has an extremely vested interest in seeing this story go away. That's why he's all in.

Oh, fair enough. And Ruds, I'm not saying Reagan was transgendered, I'm saying Lennay was a transgender and she actually did meet Manti (and Reagan).

I'm not following this. Walk me through when Lennay met Manti and when Lennay met Reagan and whether Lennay was dressed as a man or a woman in each of those encounters.
