Buy or bid on an orphan: https://www.phenomsff.com/leagues/orphans.php
When buying an orphan (or joining any dynasty/keeper type league) you do have to pay a one-time deposit, usually equal to one year's entry fees. What, why and how?
What? It's a one-time deposit held for as long as you're in the league, essentially keeping you one year ahead on your entry fees at all times.
Why? This guarantees a full prize pool for the league every year, guarantees the league won't fold, and encourages owners to not trash their teams on the way out.
How? When you decide to leave the league at some year in the future, your team will be sold just like the orphans for sale now. You get the sale price of your team back from your deposit, and any difference goes into the prize pool that year, keeping it full.
Example: In a $50 league, you sell your team for $40. You get $40 back from your deposit, and $10 goes into the prize pool. The majority of orphans do sell for full price, so most owners do get their full deposit back.
