Map of US redrawn as 50 states w/ equal pop. (1 Viewer)

Cool but I think they should have tried for some standard of borders. Wisconsin shouldnt have a huge lake cutting itself in half. If there could be a way to "fix" that, I'd like to see it.

Is there a huge pdf file of this?
Yeah I would live in Menominee and though I like some things about it that shape is ridiculous.

Also can't tell what state Lansing is in.

Looks like it is in Detroit.

Which cities are better off with the realignment? In other words which areas would be better off financially or culturally by being severed from some other areas of their existing state?

I know for sure southern Illinois would be absolutely fine with not being attached to Chicago for example.

As far as California goes it is tough to say.

I'm sure the SoCal and NorCal snobs would say that they're happy to be rid of us hicks in the Central Valley. But then again 3 of the 4 largest agricultural producing counties in the USA would be in Tule. Not to mention Kern county and it's oil industry.

Everybody in CT is trying to escape Williamantic already, and they went and annexed Western MA and RI. How wonderfully plucky of them.

Think it's Throg's Neck, but the whole NYC metro area needs more detail and thought

Should be LI including Brooklyn and Queens as a state, then Manhattan/Bronx with Westchester and Staten Island with Jersey.

Menominee at least has the Mackinac Bridge. There's be no way to get from the two halves of Throg's neck without going through a different state as the map appears to me.

What is this based on density?
:lmao:

What would the Senate look like with these borders?
I think I misread your question. I assume now, you mean in terms of republican/democrat.
Ed Zachary. Maybe one of our political wonks can take a guess. I look at Ogallala and see a loss of a bunch of seats that probably go Republican all the time. But that might be offset by gains resulting in Texas splitting up. This isn't one of my strong areas but would like to hear from the people who know stuff. Not jon_mx , though.

Elyria as the capital of Firelands? :lmao:
I don't think it's meant to be the capital. Just a city of 50-100k population. Which I also find astounding as any time I've been there it looks like a ghost town.

What was the reason for the new names?

Mesabi here.
Some details from the artist.

The capitals of the states are existing states capitals where possible, otherwise large or central cities have been chosen. The suggested names of the new states are taken mainly from geographical features:

The words used for names for the name are drawn from many languages, including many American Indian languages. While some etymologies are unclear, the root languages for the state names include Abenaki (Casco), Algonquian (Nodaway, Pocono, Willimantic), Apache (Chinati), Calusa (Tampa), Choctaw(Atchafalaya), English, French (Detroit, Ozark, Rainier), Greek (Philadelphia), Iroquoian (Shenandoah), Lakota (Ogallala), Latin (Columbia), Luiseño (Temecula),Mayaimi (Miami), Mamaceqtaw (Menominee), Miami-Illinois (Chicago), Mohawk (Adirondack), Muscogee (Muskogee), Nahuatl (Tule), Odawa (Maumee), Ojibwe(Mesabi), Potawatomi (Sangamon), Susquehannock (Susquehanna) and Wyandot (Scioto).

Keep in mind that this is an art project, not a serious proposal, so take it easy with the emails about the sacred soil of Texas. That said, if you have any questions, drop me a line.

I couldn't zoom in enough... did NYC finally ditch Staten Island?
Yeah, I wish it was more detailed. I'll look around.
You might have to buy the poster.

A poster version of the map is for sale. The poster has much more detail than the map here, including hundreds of smaller cities, an inset for the New York area and better elevation shading. The poster is 22″ by 28″ (56 x 71 cm).

The poster is $35 and ships first class to your door, safely packed in a sturdy tube.

I'd buy that in a Throg's Neck minute!
