Marcedes Lewis (1 Viewer)

I've searched the articles on Marcedes but there's not too much opinion on this guy. I drafted him as a rookie and I've had him on my team since.

I remember during his draft that Vernon Davis was #1 but I recall having read that Marcedes Lewis was a close second and would be touted the same but he fell underneath Davis' shadow.

He's not on a team that is at all pass heavy. I believe he also sustained a high ankle sprain? I believe this also hindered him this past year. While having had ample time to recover now I would expect him to show what he can this year....provided the gameplan is focused on him and he gets the touches.

I just STILL have a feeling he's a diamond in the rough....am I wrong?

I'm seeing most folks who do rankings and projections expecting Lewis to have a modest increase in business in his 3rd year -- receptions in the low/mid-40s and a ranking in the mid-teens.

TEs who make the big jump to elite status generally are on teams without large reception totals from the RBs or the WR3s and/or are more pass-happy. In JAX, however, MJD will get his 40+ catches, WRs Porter, Williams, and Northcutt will get their catches, and then there's also Mike Walker and Troy Williamson to consider (Mat Jones will be gone). As a team, they run the ball and play good D, and don't have to get into too many shootouts. They won't be among the league leaders in pass attempts.

So, it's pretty hard to look to Lewis to crack 50 catches, let alone the 65+ which would start to get him into elite territory. Probably 40-45 catches for 450-500 yards and 3-5 TDs is about all you should expect.

I liked him a bit coming out, but I'm not sure he'll ever be more than a fringe TE1. He's a dangerous weapon in the red zone and he has the potential to make an impact there. Unfortunately, he suffers from a little bit of the tall man's disease and is probably a bit too rigid and immobile to be elite. The best TE's in the game today are good open field runners (Winslow, Gates, Gonzo, Witten, Cooley). Lewis can't match their mobility. He's more of a catch-and-fall type of receiver. I think he can improve his stats and possibly put up vintage Bubba Franks type numbers, but he's not a guy I'd be looking to acquire.

The young TE I like to potentially become a top 5 type is Dustin Keller. Grab him cheap while you still can.

I disagree. He actually makes the first tackler miss as often as any of the guys you named, and he's as athletic as any of them. His ball skills are WR like and he is not stiff or tightly wound by any means (unlike say, Leonard Pope). The main thing holding Lewis back is what CP pointed out, the limiting nature of Jacksonville's passing game on any one receiver's stats. I just wrote up Lewis in my Buy Low Sell High - TEs and his faceoff this week. He's a player on the rise, and I think he'll be a low TE1/high TE2 this year.ETA:

is a lot more MJD than Lewis, but you can see from Lewis's catches, especially the pair around the 3:50-4:00 mark, that he is very athletic and coordinated.

He's definitely athletic and coordinated. But is he explosive? I don't really think so. I see him roughly in the middle on a scale from Winslow to Pope. I can imagine a substantial bump in his numbers, but I don't think he has a top 6-8 ceiling.

I agree with everything you said except your last sentence.

I dunno. Prospecting TEs is kind of like Dodds wheat penny scheme. A lot of work with very little reward. I mean a top 5 TE still goes in the 8th-10th rounds. Filling this pick is kind of ...eh?

Now if you prospect a WR/RB thats where you make your 'value'. Plus the 4-15 TEs are like w freaking merrygoround evryy 2-3 years
