MIAMI (AP) -- The Miami Dolphins saw enough potential in Marcus Vick -- both on- and off-the-field -- to believe he deserves a chance as a free agent.

Vick, the brother of Atlanta quarterback Michael Vick, signed with the Dolphins on Monday, agreeing to a free-agent deal after his many problems at Virginia Tech cost him a chance to be selected in the NFL draft.

"As an organization, we did an enormous amount of research, including consulting with professionals in detailed, in-depth analysis to feel comfortable that giving Marcus an opportunity as a free agent is a risk worth taking," Dolphins coach Nick Saban said in a statement released by the team.

"I want to make it very clear that we will not condone any behavior issues in the future relative to Marcus Vick. Marcus acknowledges that he has made some mistakes, all of which has resulted in severe consequences for him. They have helped him learn that he will need to make much better choices and decisions in the future or risk similar consequences that could jeopardize his career as a professional player."

Vick, who participated in a three-day minicamp with the Dolphins earlier this month, completed 177 of 289 passes for 2,393 yards with 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, leading Virginia Tech to an 11-2 record and berth in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game in 2005.

But his career with the Hokies included many transgressions. He made an obscene gesture to fans during a game at West Virginia, and stomped on Louisville player Elvis Dumervil's leg during the Gator Bowl.

Vick was suspended by Virginia Tech for the 2004 season because of legal problems, then was eventually dismissed from the team after being stopped for speeding and driving with a revoked or suspended license.

The Dolphins are listing Vick as a "wide receiver-quarterback-specialist," clearly indicating that he could be tried in a number of roles.

During the recent minicamp, Vick spent at least one practice session at wide receiver, and probably isn't being looked at as a serious quarterback candidate -- not with newcomers Daunte Culpepper and Joey Harrington now at that position.

Miami signed three other free agents Monday: tight end Keith Heinrich, linebacker Keith Newman and cornerback Michael Lehan.

Heinrich was on Cleveland's injured reserve list for the entire 2005 season with a knee injury and has played in 18 games since being drafted by Carolina in 2002.

Newman has played with Buffalo, Atlanta and Minnesota in seven seasons, starting 76 of 92 games and recording 407 tackles, 23 sacks, two interceptions, three fumble recoveries and seven forced fumbles.

Lehan, like Vick, attended the rookie minicamp this month on a tryout basis. He spent the last three seasons with the Browns and made 32 appearances, including four starts.

Dont really understand this move. Too big of a risk for my likiing.

Im not a Vick fan by any means, but what is the risk?

I think Marcus already hooked up with Traylor, down in Florida, which seems to be the drug-gun capital of America now..... FLA was always a heavyweight, but it's the camp now.

I myself would have thought that the teams in the NFC South would have signed him if for nothing else just to the practice squad. Who better to play Mike Vick than little brother.... and know more running 3 different qb's around to simulate big brother.

Those two games a year don't neccessarily make it worthwhile.I do think he's a good practice squad player, but not just to emulate his bro.

He knows that one screw up = GONE. And with his past, it may only take one screwup to end his very brief NFL career. SoooOoOOooo... I don't see the harm in it. Punk, yes. But even punks sometimes get a chance in the NFL...

I don't see a risk. He'll come to camp, get cut, and that will be that. No skin off the Dolphins' nose.If he shows a lot of potential, maybe he'll even make the practice squad.

I can't see him beating out Cleo Lemon, though.

There's 80-90 players on teams now with maybe half that making the minimum NFL salary. If Vick weren't there someone else would be. It's a calculated monetary risk

The thread # on him is outta control I hope guys start searching before starting a new one.

I think the bold portion of this article explains why the Phins are willing to take the risk. Its the same reason Luke Walton is playing in the NBA; name recognition.

lmao @ ATL not even signing him as an FA. Guess big bro's pull is slipping a little

;)
That would of been my first guess after the draft. Ron knows any bad pub is just that.. bad pub. He certainly doesn't want anymore of that. In Miami, of all places, it's just a matter of time. :clyde:

Blank & the Falcons drafted the local College (Georgia Bulldogs) QB hero, DJ Shockley.Wayyyyyyy more popular QB, who will put many more butts in the seats than Marcus Vick ever would. Better business move than signing M. Vick, not to mention, Shockley is the better QB of the two.

Next stop: Minnesota?
I hate the idea of that. Right up there with Herschel for me. Thankfully young Vick isn't good enough to make the squad so he won't have the chance to hit a cop with his car and hire an agent that gets busted with 85 lbs or so of coke.

In a thread earlier this year, people were saying Marcus Vick has 1st round talent, but would slide because of his off the field issues. Now he signs as a wide receiver/qb/specialist. This doesn't sound like 1st round qb talent to me.

Signing an undrafted free agent is a low risk as it gets. The Dolphins have until the end of August to decide if he deserves a roster spot or a place on the practice squad, just like every other undrafted free agent on their rosters (most of whom we have never heard of).

I think Marcus already hooked up with Traylor, down in Florida, which seems to be the drug-gun capital of America now..... FLA was always a heavyweight, but it's the camp now.
Heck, look at Sean Taylor. Florida's even where OTHER TEAMS' screwups come to screw up.

or have homes where they grew up and went to college

Wasn't his big screwup during a camp Gibbs was staging in Washington? Wasn't there a whole big fuss about how Taylor was supposed to be in Washington, but instead he skipped the workouts and was screwing up in Florida?

Like many of the "U" players, they work out together down in Miami. That's what all the brew ha ha was all about. Also, Gibbs was aware of it and though they wished he was there, many of the old Cane players work out harder together than any normal NFL camp. That's why many of the teams care, but don't push it too hard for those players.

The Cleo Lemon bandwagon still rolling?I think people forget how good Vick was at Va. Tech. He was absolutely dominant at times for the Hokies - he single handedly beat BC, WVU, Maryland, and threw for > 300 yards against Florida St. with average WRs and an average running game. Mike had much better offensive talent surrounding him in college.

I think a lot of teams will regret not using a late flyer on Marcus. On pure physical ability, he's a lot like Donovan McNabb in that he's extremely accurate short and mid-range, and can beat linebackers one-on-one.

Sounds like a worse Woody Dantzler to me.Youre right that he has the ability to go on the late first day/early second day, but he has by far the most character concerns of any player in this draft, and no team is going to rely on a QB who is pulling guns on teenagers, or drugging up 15 yr old girls.

People are missing the point here. Vick will compete for the WR and punt returner jobs - and both positions have vacancies. Wes Welker is a Wannstadt guy and I wouldnt be surprised if he was jettissoned by Saban for a faster return man. As for the offense, the Dolphins usually carry five WR's - and right now they dont have five quality WR's on the roster.

1) Chris Chambers

2) Marty Booker

3) Derek Hagen (3rd rounder)

4) Wes Welker

5) Devin Aromashodu (7th rounder)

6) Marcus Vick

7) Kelly Cambpell (out of the League last year)

8) Fred Gibson (claimed off Waivers last year)

The top three guys are locks - that leaves two additional spots for the the bottom five guys. IMO Kelly Cambpell and Aromashodu will be vying for one spot - that of the burner that can make plays in the vertical passing game. I give the advantage to Aromashodu due to his size advantage and upside. Cambpell will get a look due to his previous relationship with Culpepper, but I think its a battle he will ultimately lose.

The last spot come will down to a battle between Welker and Vick in the slot. To his advantage, Welker is a very underrated receiver and a reliable special teams player. So Vick will have his work cut for him. But Vick is bigger and a much better athlete, having posted a blazing 20 yard shuttle (4.08) and a 36 inch vertical at the combine. And Nick Saban loves athletes. One more point in Vicks favor is that Mike Mularkey loves trick plays (think Randel El, Kordell Stewart, etc), giving Vick an edge in the gadget category.

Anyway, if he keeps his head on straight, I wouldnt be surprised to see Vick make this team as a WR/PR. Given the dearth of competiton at those positions, its a great, low risk move by Miami.

i see this as NO RISK whatsoever

this guy could have easily been a 2nd round pick, or at the very WORST first day choice if he didnt get into stupid stuff off the field

he's a kid and make some dumb choices, but im sure alot of that stuff was way overblown

i think the Dolphins are extremely smart for taking a chance on him, they have NOTHING to lose and a STUD athlete to gain
