Childress steers blame away from system
As his players chose their words carefully Tuesday, Vikings coach Brad Childress said he released receiver Marcus Robinson to open up playing time for other receivers.
"You know what?" Childress said during his weekly appearance on Sirius satellite radio. "We're going to look at some other guys. I think, just physically and talent-wise, that's the whole point. We've got some other guys with fresher legs. It's really a skill and ability thing."
Robinson officially was put on waivers Tuesday, but the Vikings informed him Sunday of the impending move. The decision came a day after he acknowledged his frustration with his season in a published report, but Childress made no mention Tuesday of the role that interview might have played.
Without Robinson, the Vikings will have four veteran receivers -- Travis Taylor, Troy Williamson, Bethel Johnson and Billy McMullen -- on the roster for Sunday's season finale against St. Louis. Former practice squad receivers Jason Carter and Martin Nance could also see action.
Players in the locker room Tuesday all expressed their surprise with the release but were not ready to accept it as a team-wide message.
"I was surprised not just because he was a veteran and a guy that some guys look up to," linebacker Ben Leber said, "but also because of the time of the year. It's so late in the season. I don't think I've ever seen a guy get released with one week to go. I don't know what happened with it."
Asked if he thought the move was an isolated incident related to specific circumstances, Leber said: "I don't know. The way I look at it, I think it's an isolated incident. I don't know everything that went on between he and the coaching staff or whatever. I heard there were times when he was not suited up for games, but he was healthy to play. So I think there was more to it than what we know."
Robinson, meanwhile, will find out today at 3 p.m. if he has been claimed by another team. If not, he is free to negotiate a free-agent contract with any team.
Woods works out
Wide receiver Rashaun Woods, a first-round pick of San Francisco in 2004, was among seven players the Vikings worked out Tuesday. The Vikings were among the teams interested in Woods after he was waived in August by San Diego in part because receivers coach Darrell Wyatt was Woods' position coach for a season at Oklahoma State.
Woods, who spent the 2005 season on injured reserve because of torn ligaments in his thumb, was claimed off waivers by Denver but failed his physical and has been on the free-agent market.
He could be a candidate to replace Robinson. The Vikings also worked out receivers Davon Fowlkes (Appalachian State) and Jovan Witherspoon (Central Michigan).
The Vikings also took a look at defensive backs Chip Cox (Ohio), Wally Dada (Washington State) and Stanford Samuels (Florida State) and running back Kenton Keith (New Mexico State).
Pretty sure that was Gary Crowton's offenseStill not a bad ideaThe Bears should claim him. He had a nice run in Ron Turner's offense last time he was in town...and from what I recall, he was a pretty good guy as well...Can't hurt right?
This sounds like stats my son sometimes gives me. Last season he went to 10 Pittsburgh Pirates gamesand they were 9-1. He wants the Pirates to pay him to go to all their games so they can win 145 games next season.Interesting stat of the day:Vikings record this season when Marcus Robinson plays: 6-4Vikings record this season when Marcus Robinson does NOT play: 0-5Sounds like he was a BIG problem for them!!![]()
Does your son wear a uniform and participate in the game? Because if not this is a useless and inaccurate comparison. This sounds like stats my son sometimes gives me. Marcus had marginally more effect on the Vikings winning than Godsbrother's son had on the Pirates winning. It's very accurate.Does your son wear a uniform and participate in the game? While I wasn't trying to compare Marcus Robinson to LT, the fact that he was their ONLY deep threat and played pretty well this year (while leading the team in TD receptions) can't be ignored.Marcus had marginally more effect on the Vikings winning than Godsbrother's son had on the Pirates winning.
