Mardis Gras and a trip to McClures! (1 Viewer)

My family and I have been living on the road in our RV for the last couple years (http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=699558&hl=) and the week before last we made it to Mardis Gras! We absolutely love Mardis Gras, we caught two of the super Krewe parades (Endymion and Bacchus) and then a smaller parade up in Metairie. My trailer is filled with beads, nerf balls, stuffed animals, dubloons, cups, and all manner of bauble tossed to us down on St Charles St.. My kids had a ball, Mardis Gras was one of the highlights of our trip a couple years ago and I'm so glad we made it again.

I also finally got to bring the family to Preservation Hall. We got to see my favorite trumpet player, Will Smith (not THAT Will Smith), lead the PHall Brass Band. It was special to be able to expose the kids to such a cool and authentic night of music. There's always music in the streets down in the quarter but it's actually a bit difficult to find a place to bring kids to hear some old school jazz, but Prez hall has no food, no drinks, and no bathrooms. Just a tiny room and music and we absolutely loved it. No pics or video allowed during the performance but I was able to snap a shot of the family up front before the band came on. Kids hung in for all 3 sets and really dug it. My son's only complaint was that they were so close that they got spit on a few times by the trombone player.

The main reason for the post though is to sing the praises of our own tipsy mcstagger and his BBQ joint McClure's. When I told my family on the last night of our time in NO that we weren't going to get any more Gumbo or Beignets and instead we were going to a BBQ joint they were less than thrilled. When I tried to explain how great it was because "I know this guy from my fantasy football message board" it wasn't exactly met with the applause I anticipated. Well, any and all whining and complaining stopped when THIS came out...

This is the All Meat & All Sides platter. Actually it's two of them smacked together. It's some of every meat and side on the regular menu (minus the sausage, we were there a bit late and they had run out but they threw an extra side of pulled pork down for us instead). A classier man may have been embarrassed by the spectacle my brood put on attacking that plate, but I couldn't help feeling a little proud of my little culinary adventurers. I'm just glad they left some for me. This was the after...

I know most of us would like to support and say nice things about a fellow FBG realizing one of his dreams and making good on a risky business venture. If it sucked I'm sure I would have said something nice or not said anything at all. However, this was seriously the best BBQ I've ever had. Now I grew up on the East Coast and lived in SoCal so I'm more of an expert on Cheesesteaks, Italian, Pizza, or Mexican, but I've done a fair amount of travelling and I've had some really excellent BBQ all through the South and through some of Texas. I can honestly say, even if tipsy wasn't someone I kind of "cyber-know", that this was the absolute best BBQ ever. My wife and kids loved it just as much as me, they were actually eating Collard greens and enjoying them, not an easy undertaking. But the sauces were out of this world, all the meat was juicy, smokey, and perfect, and the sides (often the downfall of many BBQ places) were just as good as the meat. I couldn't give it a higher recommendation. Everyone was pretty blown away.

Got to meet tipsy also, really nice guy. I wish him the best and hope he is a wild success so his restaurant is around the next time we roll through NO, we definitely wont miss it.

If you're anywhere nearby, GO!
