Margaritas (1 Viewer)

I normally make mine using the basic ingredients of tequila, triple sec, and fresh squeezed lime juice. Before I get crucified, by triple sec I mean any citrus liqueur that you desire. The possibilities are endless and its a matter of preferred taste. I think the fresh Mexican key limes make all the difference in the world, but that's just me. I digress.

Wife is taking a long weekend with her people to the beach in Alabama. I get to go mend fences at the ranch. Anyway, she is looking for a good commercially available margarita mix. I have no idea which way to steer her, so I thought that I would ask you cretins.

Any ideas?

The only decent one I've found is called Tarantula. It's bright blue. Mix some orange juice with it and the tequila and it's not bad in a pinch. The OJ cuts down on the sweetness of the mix

Yeah, I think you can get away with Rose's instead of fresh lime juice, but I think you're pretty much locked into to buy your tequila and orange brandy separately and mix.

If in a bind, go with this:

8 shots reposado

2 shots silver

5 shots rose's lime juice

4 shots triple/curacao/cointreau/whatever (or mix/match)

1 small can dole's pineapple juice

it can be bought anywhere, and all you need is a shot glass to measure.

Bypass the commerical margarita mix and use Rose's Lime juice. 1 part tequila, .5 part triple sec, 1-1.5 parts Rose's is a great margarita.

Also, your fresh lime juice margarita could benefit from a bit of simple syrup.

Simple syrup is totally a personal taste thing. Some people like the drink sweeter than others. Dale DeGroff's recipe doesn't use any simple syrup.

I also think a 1:1 Rose's to tequila ratio, much less a 1.5:1 ratio, would be way off for me. If I'm using Rose's, I'm generally making a 3:2:1 tequila, orange liquor, lime ratio. And I'm maybe watering it down a bit to make it less cloying. Obviously, I prefer using fresh lime juice and then sweetening to taste. I also prefer grand marnier. I don't think it's too strong for cocktails, and I think the brandy note is what I usually find I miss from other margaritas.

Lately, if I'm in the mood for margaritas, I'll make a pitcher of beer margaritas. Really simple, and way better tasting than most margaritas I've had containing triple sec.....

1 can (12 oz) frozen limeade concentrate

12 oz tequila

12 oz water

12 oz beer (Corona works)

Stir, add ice, and garnish with lime wedges. Add more water (or booze) to taste.

Why do people use Rose's Lime juice, bottled sour, or any other fake stuff for cocktails?

Anyone can go buy Lemons or Limes, honey, and hopefully they have water at the house. It is so simple and so much better than that crap off of a store shelf. When honey is in season you can buy flavored honey and make some different flavored simple syrups that can make unique margaritas

Sour mix is one part Lemon or Lime and two parts Simple Syrup (adjust if you like it a touch more sour)

This.

i mix it up a bit. i like using simply lime aide, agave, blood orange juice (or san pellegrino). rather have mine a bit tart than sweet.

Prickly pear syrup as your sweetener

1.5 oz silver Tequila

1 oz Cointreau

1.5 oz lime juice

Prickly pear sweetener to taste

Look for a brand called Freshies. That said, picking a best Margarita Mix is like naming MVP of a kickball game.

It woulda be easier to buy decent lime juice, not from concentrate, agave nectar or honey, a decent tequila, Sauza Blue is more than fine, and make good ones.

Use equal parts sugar and acid to start. .75 oz each.

Shake the hell out, of them.

The exact same recipe I use. So easy and tastes great. Can't beat it.

Appreciate the ideas, but the wife wants a no-brainer method. That's why I am seeking a good mix. Something that she can dump in the blender, add tequila, fill it with ice and go to town. All the mixes that I have tried are mostly crap. Too sweet. I'll probably just set her up with limeade, Grand Marnier, and a bottle of decent Blanco. After the first pitcher, she'll likely not care how they turn out anyway.

Seriously try the beer margarita recipe. I think she will like it.

That will probably work, just use ice instead of water. Her people like them frozen, which is sacrilege if you ask me, but what do I know?

Jose Cuervo mix is actually pretty decent. Make it last by adding a splash of OJ and a splash of sprite to each drink. I bartended and managed bars through the 90s including a tequila bar. Keep it simple. This isn't what we used of course, but it is easy. I think Cuervo tequila is crap.

Yeah, Jose Cuervo is like the Miller Lite of tequila. Great marketing, lousy product.

Of course Jose Cuervo is crap. If you want a decent tequila, at least make sure it is 100% blue agave. Jose Cuervo Tradicional is all blue agave and only a few bucks more. Gold is added caramel coloring.

Commercial margarita mix is fine IMO if you just use a small amount.

Rather than thinking of it as a "mix", think of it as a sweetener to balance out the lime juice.

When I make a standard shakerful of it (makes 2 drinks) I do something like: 3 shots of tequila, 1 shot of triple sec, juice of 2 limes, and 1 shot of mix.

Still add the water IMO. Tried it without water and was far too sour. Even with the ice, it will be fine. Or maybe try half the water.
