NCAA | M. Williams interviews at the NFL Combine

Sat, 25 Feb 2006 14:16:00 -0800

During his NFL Combine interview, North Carolina State DE Mario Williams said he measured a height of 6-7 and a weight of 295 pounds. He has selected Ben Dogra as his agent. He added he's honored to be compared to Carolina Panthers DE Julius Peppers.

I thought he looked alot like Javon Kearse in game highlights. Turns out Super Mario has 3" and 30 pounds on Kearse.

Fortunately the Packers don't use the 3-4 so he should be FAR better than merely "solid".
If you are saying the Packers are going to draft Williams, who's headed to the bench - KGB or Kampman?RAPTURE

GB is trying to reduce the amount of snaps per game for KGB because he is more of a pass rusher than a every down DE. The more downs he plays, the more he loses his effectiness.GB wants Kampman back, (assuming they sign him) so probably there will be some sort of rotation system between the three if GB drafts Williams.

Makes sense.I may be wrong, but it seems to me that the Packers could use AJ Hawk more than Mario Williams. I've seen more of Hawk, and am truly impressed with him. Is Mario better?

IMO, Mario is more of a imposing physical speciman. Quite simply, the world is not filled with 6'7" 295lb guys who have Williams' potential.Hawk, on the other hand, is more NFL ready than Williams. He was blessed with amazing intincts, plus he has blazing speed and tackling ability. He should be starting Week 1 for any team who drafts him.

It's very difficult to say one is better than the other. Hawk will give you more bang-for-buck now, but I believe Williams has more upside potential.

I expect Williams to be a Niner uniform and Hawk in a pack uni come April 29 unless Kampman signs elsewhere. Williams is the rare DE that can handle himself in just about any scheme and role. I think he's a prototype 3-4 or 4-3 end, his skills/physical package combo is that rare.

The reincarnation of Julius Peppers just ran a 4.69/40 at the Combine.

For comparative purposes...

M Williams: 6'7" 295lbs with 4.69 speed

J Peppers (coming into the NFL): 6'6" 285lbs with 4.73 speed

If I had any say with the Pack I would be all over Williams. DE's like that don't come around very often and this is a very deep draft at LB.

Its looking like the pack is not going after Kampman, so Mario's the pick unless he goes off the board at #4 to the jets.

He looks like he has the credentials to be a solid 3-4 DE.

That's exactly why part of me thinks they won't draft him. Pack just cut Digg's on Friday. I'm hoping that they have their eyeballs on Hawk in the draft.
