I heard on a local sports talk radio show this evening that Mario Williams was not even in the top ten for the Lombardi Trophy in 2005.

Does anyone know if this information is true or where to find it, I googled but could not find that.

I know AJ Hawk won but that is all I could find.

If this is true then this makes the #1 draft pick even more disturbing than it already is.

I'm pretty sure that nobody in the '06 draft class has won a Lombardi trophy.

It's the Lombardi Award, not trophy. And yes, Hawk did win. The other finalists were: Elvis Dumervil of Louisville, Paul Posluszny of Penn St and Rodrique Wright from Texas.

Mario Williams was also 4th in voting for ACC Defensive Player of the Year.

And was one of three NCState defensive linemen drafted in the first round from a team that only won 3 of 8 conference games and had a middle of the road ACC defense. Red flags anyone???

As much as I can't stand Peter King, he had an eye-opening stat when he was on the Dan Patrick radio show today. Mario Williams and N.C. State played three games against non-Division 1 opponents while he was a starter. In three games against those awful teams, Williams got exactly zero sacks. How is that possible?I forget exactly which teams they were.

He said he mentioned that "in his column today" as well, but I can't find a link. :(

NCState dlinmen were the most overrated thing going in the 2006 draft.

:goodposting: And Penn State had exactly one player taken on the first day. I like Tamba Hali to have a better career in the NFL, he's more the new style DE/LB that is popular these days. Big lazy lug like Williams is gonna find himself on his rear end alot.

I think Mario is faster, quicker and more agile than Tamba Hali.

I think they are close in speed. Williams is way bigger and (obviously) plays higher. Ideally that is preferable, but the problem is if he doesnt attack and use his strength he's going to get muscled out of a lot of plays, and the big knock on him is that he takes plays off and doesnt have the innate aggression of a Jason Taylor/Reggie White/J Peppers to get after it. His size will be a detriment if he doesnt play hard. Place holders dont fare well in the NFL.Hali is a littler guy with quicker game speed. More importantly he's got a motor, i think he's more of a disruptive force over the course of a game. Williams will make big plays, but he will also disapear for long stretches. Tamba Hali is one of those guys that tries to have some sort of impact every down, plus you can move him around in a 3-4 defense and really confuse matters.Obviously the systems these guys play in is a critical aspect.

from Peter King...

Mario Williams' Division I-AA Foes

Opponent Season Tackles Assists Sacks

Western Carolina 2003 5 1 0

Richmond 2004 3 0 0

Eastern Kentucky 2005 0 1 0

A bit of a cherry pick on his stats but still a little  for a top pick

Hopefully NO doesn't play the NFC Central this year.

NC State's defense ranked 14th nationally in 2005 & 1st in 2004. Anyone who watched NCSU regularly the last 2 years knows the defense was not the problem. BTW, FSU had 4 1st round draft picks on defense and finished behind NCSU in total defense.

Yes, all those professional scouts who graded these guys as first rounders obviously forgot to check N.C. State's record last year. Morons. If they were smart they'd check in on this board for some real insight before the draft.

God knows the scouts have never been wrong. Guess thats why Tony Mandarich has been anchoring Green Bays line for the last 15 years.
Now there's an enlightened argument. Your scout buddies teach you that one?

If they were smart they'd check in on this board for some real insight before the draft.
I guess only dumb ones check on this board... wait a minute you're reading this board... :excited:

It's fine to question players. Scouts obviously miss on guys. But to lump 3 players together to all bust because they played for one school that had an average record, despite a great defense, is not justifiable.

I don't think any of them will really bust. The NCState team was very talented on D and I was not surprised to see so many get drafted. I just think they were drafted too high and overranked because of potential.

How often was Mario double-teamed? For a guy to go #1 a lot of scouts have to be high on his ability and even if it didn't show up in the stat column he must have made a huge impact on the field. I heard a lot about him taking plays off but if offenses are focusing on shutting him down it would make a lot of players look like they are taking plays off.

It wouldn't surprise me at all that the reason Lawson and McCargo looked so go good is that Mario got so much attention from the offense.
