Mariota to Bucs? (1 Viewer)

Pretty good read on the Bucs needing to target Marcus Mariota next year:

As a Bucs fan, I'd rather see them just go after a franchise QB instead of treading water with McCown and Glennon. Granted, they have a whole lot of other needs, but I'd be willing to endure another 2-14 season if Mariota is the real deal and they have something to build on for years to come.
Is he a franchise QB? I have seen him play probably 4 times and couldnt really tell either way.

He's the best option in a really weak QB class. Far from a franchise QB. Draftable with the hope he can become a franchise QB. There are less that 10 true franchise QBs in the NFL right now.

"really weak" QB class? I don't really see it that way. This could be the 2nd or 3rd best QB class in the last 10 years. Definitely better then 2014 and 2013 classes.

I think you're probably looking at minimum 3-4 long-term starters from 2014. That's not a bad class.

Yeah, really weak. 2013 and 2014 were on the pathetic level. It's not hard to have a better class than pure ####.

WAY too early to tell. 1 year after most drafts you could say that, but look at how so many qbs drop off and disappear. No franchise qbs necessarily, and teddy and johnny could be nothings in a couple years.

Fact is, this year's class on draft day will be higher touted then last years class on draft day. 2 qbs are coming off top 7 this year and that doesn't happen that often anymore. It's a decently strong class.

Well then every year in last 10 was "really weak" besides the Luck year.... is that right?

No chance he's not a top 5 pick, and likely goes number 1. And I hate the guy.

Rodgers

Brady

Manning

Brees- Kind of

Wilson

The kind ofs are franchise qbs that aren't that great. Could probably add Flacco to that list.

Well Flacco and Eli won SBs. But good list.

Mariota has his head on straight. Winston, not so much.

I don't think Mariota is a slam dunk by any means, especially if he goes to a dumpster fire, and said team doesn't improve around him.

I think lod01 means 'elite' when he says 'franchise'.
Yep. Only elite QBs are truly franchise QBs. Matt Ryan is a very good QB but is not a franchise QB. He's damn close as they will have him for the next 10 years. He still is prone to some really bad decisions. Same with Andy Dalton. There is nothing to upgrade to from him so he is their QB for the foreseeable future.

Joe Flacco is a ham and egger who cashed in via a top NFL defense.

Matt Stafford is a real poor Brett Favre with absolutely no Favre magic. A guy who they will stick with for 10 years and not win anything unless they have a top defense.

Potentially. No franchise QBs.
How do you define franchise QB? Who do you consider a franchise QB currently in the NFL?
I created a thread on it but there are only about 5 franchise QBs in the league.

Rodgers, Brady, P. Manning, Roethlisberger, Luck.

If average QB play across the league was not so abominable, plenty of guys who are considered 'franchise' QBs would be in fights to keep their jobs. But because there is so little coming out of college, teams must keep and pay big $ to guys that should not be paid like they are....Jay Cutler, Joe Flacco, Eli.

If I am the Bucs I would let Gerald McCoy make the 1st pick.

Winston is the better pro QB. Without character concerns he is the better pro prospect. I wouldn't waste a 1st overall pick on a QB like Mariota who is in an offense that doesn't require a QB to read a defense. He is a project. Winston is pro ready.

Lovie is probably going to want Winston but will succumb to the pressure to take Mariota. Then he will suck because any QB is going to suck behind this Oline.

Bucs should trade back if possible. They need to land 3-4 starting linemen.

Drafting a QB 1st is a losing proposition for the current state of the Bucs. About 1/3 of the Bucs fan base are Noles fans, so they will want Winston. About 50% of Bucs fans are Gator fans, so they aren't going to want Winston. So if they draft Winston at least half of the fans hate the pick day 1. FSU fans will hate the Mariota pick.

When they drafted Freeman it was a wait & see. If they draft Mariota or Winston they will face instant criticism.

I want Winston, but feel Tampa is too small of a stage for a player / icon of his magnitude. He belongs in NY. I would like to see him in a Jets uniform.

The draft process is going to effect most QB prospects negatively. I expect Winston will be like Manziel and fall to the middle of round 1 or further.

I don't know about that. Manziel fell because he is a midget. QBs have actually been going higher since they put in the rookie cap. NFL teams have also show that they are willing to over draft for pro style QBs. EJ & Ponder were both overdrafted & they weren't nearly as talented as Winston.

Winston will go top 3 for sure.

3 Super Bowls among those guys listed. Is the point to get a franchise QB, or win Super Bowls?

JF fell for a lot of reason IMO. Short, not nearly the athlete people thought he was and not making plays from the pocket. Mariota doesn't have 2 of those 3 issues, I think.

Winston could bomb the team interviews and fall. I just don't think he's going to do well there but it's very tough to know.

Win SBs obviously. However, if you don't have a franchise QB, the thing to do is build a 'franchise' defense, like Baltimore, then what happens is your ham and egger QB rides to victory on your D's shoulders, then cashes in big. Then your D fades away and you are stuck with Flacco. Now Flacco is an NFL starter, he's just not a franchise QB. They will not win SB's on his shoulders.

The D won the Giants SBs also. Manning was lucky Tyree made the greatest catch in NFL history and while Gomer had a good game the 2nd SB, both years, the Giants held the Pats to their season low points.

You can't wait around for the next Luck. If Tampa thinks they can win a SB with Mariota (or Winston), you grab him. Until you have a QB, you don't have anything. He doesn't need to be a top 5 QB.

Sad but true. Unfortunately, when teams pick guys like this, it ends up holding them hostage for 3+ years. Then they potentially miss out on a better QB. and possibly a real franchise QB which neither of these guys are. Winston will be an INT & sack machine and find the bench after the team finally gives up. However, he will already have done his damage to the franchise. He may even start off strong but once the film is available, DC's will feast on him.

Other than the few slam dunk guys like Luck qb's are an absolute crapshoot. I think their probability of success is as much determined by what situation they end up in regarding coaching/surrounding talent etc. as much as the individuals talent level. Somehow I don't think Aaron Rodgers would be where he is if he ended up in Jacksonville, NYJ or Oakland. The guy is phenomenal but even the greatest qb's out there couldn't overcome some situations. It takes more than just a qb to turn around some franchises.

Mariota is more likely to be an interception & sack machine. Unless Chip Kelly is his O-coordinator he is going to struggle to learn a pro style offense. If he can't read a defense a d check down he will have to hold onto the ball too long and take sacks or throw INts

You obviously have never watched Mariota play. One of his biggest strengths is reading defenses and progressing through his options. You don't only have 2 interceptions by not being able to read defenses. Hell, second straight year with the highest qbr. Maybe Winston is the one who struggles reading defenses with what, 13 interceptions so far this year?

I saw him basically throw 2 INts the 1st half of the Arizona game that the defense dropped.

You don't have to read and go through progressions when your always throwing bubble screens.

I'm not the only one saying it... he isn't a drop back passer, so he is going to have a steep learning curve.

Some rumors out here (Granted I live in Ducks land) is the Chip Kelly is ready to mortgage these next two drafts to move up to #1 to get him.

:lmao: Better make it 3 and a player to move up that far.

Chip loved Geno Smith and took multiple trips to see him, he loved Manziel and even tried to recruit him. He says Mariota is the best players he's coached. Blah, blah, blah. Pencil Chip in for Mannion or Hogan.

A few years ago it looked like Washington got the better end of the deal. This year it looks like Stl. Being a copy cat league, I think the Bucs would loved to make a Stl. Style trade down, but Philly doesn't have aN early enough pick.

Honest analysis of Winston, and everyone should see a Ryan Leaf/JaMarcus Russell combo screaming at them. He is not nearly as NFL ready as some people want so desperately to believe, and you can't ignore that his head is a mess. He will be out of the league. And fast.

Mariota projects out as a Colin Kaepernick, which isn't awful, but isn't a savior. I am a duck alumn, and I'm obviously a huge fan of what he's meant for the program. In the right system with the talent around him, he could be really, really good. But, he's not a "franchise" QB.

I see why Kaep is a comp but in some sense it's lazy because of the legs. Mariota doesn't have a cannon but has better touch and accuracy. He keeps his eyes down field much better and played better competition. I think Mariota is closer to Wilson than Kaep. It's easy to yell 'RUNNING QB!' but Mariota is better than that and a better prospect than Kaep was.

My problem with Mariotta is that he doesn't have to make the reads or go through the progressions that an nfl QB has to do. You can't sit here and say he will learn it either, because how the hell do you know? He runs an offense only a handful of teams use so there is valid concern about whether he can translate over into pro style.

Winston might be a loon off the field but for a pro style QB he is light years better than MM and the best prospect since Luck. But if you draft him you are courting risk; there is zero doubt in my mind his skills translate and he will be very successful if he keeps it together off the field, but that is an extremely legit concern. Probably even more of a concern than if MM can translate to pro style.

I'm a huge Bucs/Noles fan and I don't think I want either at #1. Now picks 4-7? Different story.

I'm actually kind of hoping the Bucs win 1 so we aren't stuck picking betweend the two.

I don't want no Mariota I don't want no Mariota

that's my take as well except I think MM can translate if he's willing to work and I wouldn't put Winston quite up there with Luck.

I just don't want my QB to have Winston's issues.

MM has more talent than Tebow and a better work ethic than Vince Young.

I think there is almost zero chance the Bucs take Winston at 1. So if you're hoping for him you should hope they win another game or two or trade down.

That's common with former college coaches.

Geno is probably a target he could acquire. Mariotta about can't be had.

The Eagles GM and coach have talked about Safeties lately and how the game is trended toward that being a key position, so obviously them taking a safety seems likely.

Hate to say it, cuz I hate the ducks, but I think this is pretty spot on. Mariota has torched Pac 12 D's and keeps getting better. The first Arizona game is an outlier because the O-line was trashed.

Would you really feel confidant letting Lovie Smith draft and develop a qb? Don't be fooled, he is making personnel decisions, not the GM. They have no clue on the qb's they have now.
