Marketing Mark Sanchez (1 Viewer)

Obviously this is all contingent on him having success. Lets assume he lives up to the hype.

This article got me thinkingThe NY media loves him (atleast for now). He's squeaky clean and with a ton more charisma than Eli. His Hispanic heritage definitely helps him. I could see him being the "face" of the NFL for the next ten years.

What is his marketing potential?

His potential is through the roof. There's no doubt about that.

He's got charisma, he's good looking, he's very comfortable and confident giving interviews. His hispanic heritage, his USC pedigree, his position and his and landing in NYC all give him limitless potential. If he's a good NFL QB ahd has some clutch moments, he'll be an unbelievable marketing tool. Think Derek Jeter.

How would the hype of Sanchez compare to what Eli got after the draft?

He has swagger, if he's a great qb the sky is the limit.

Mancrush, sir?

Doesn't need to be a mancrush to be true. Almost every reporter/reviewer/commentator that's discussed Sanchez in the last week has mentioned how he's apparently an incredible interview, and that his teammates at USC universally adored, respected, and followed him.

If he has the talent to match his interpersonal skills, I think that Chase has it dead on. He'll be tremendously marketable.

Well, you'd take Eli's hype then add in all the fans that immediately decided they hated Eli b/c he refused to play for San Diego and add the thousands of latino football fans who've now just found their favorite player in Mark Sanchez.

What is his marketing potential?
1) With all due respect, he is not squeaky clean. 2) Only 386 days ago, he was announced as his COLLEGE starter.

3) An argument could be made that he wasn't the most talented quarterback on the USC roster any year he was there.

4) If he had been THAT good, he would have beaten out John David Booty.

5) He has financially taken advantage of the fact that some of the other QBs stayed in school.

6) With his arm, he will struggle in the wind.

7) There's certainly marketing potential for substandard, gelproduct-in-the-hair type QBs. See Leinart, Matt and Quinn, Brady and Palmer, Jesse

I think he'll appear on the Bachelor in 7 years or less. Perhaps his career will take a Jesse Palmer type arc.

1. If your talking about the sexual assault case, the charges were dropped.2. Even with just one year as a starter, many scouts/personell have him as the most NFL ready QB this year from college

3. Please make the argument

4. Looks like Carroll went with Booty more out of loyalty (who was waiting for his "turn" forever). Most coaches will play their Sr/Jr QB's over their Fr/So QB's

5. Tebow, McCoy and possibly Bradford are not top 5 picks.

6. He does not have a noodle arm. Scouts have said its every bit as good as Matt Ryan's. His arm strength is fine.

7. Your attempt at humor offends me as a human being.

Sorry but Bradford is easily top 5.

Huge. The NFL already has a month they devote to advertising 'futbol americano' to draw more from the Hispanic audience. That alone will have an impact on them marketing Sanchez. He doesn't have to be great, merely decent, and he'll be a marketing machine!

Bradford, right now, is among discussions as the potential #1 overall next year, so I'm hard pressed to understand why ANYONE would say he's not even top-5.
His size. His arm. What Off. he plays in. Think Graham Harrell and you'll be close were Bradford gets drafted. Don't listen too guys on ESPN and you be fine.
 M=S, I love you for your humor....

1. If your talking about the sexual assault case, the charges were dropped.

I was talking about him using a fake ID to procure alcohol and him drinking underage on the night he was alleged to have sexually assaulted that girl who was later forced to leave campus. If Sanchez were "squeaky clean," USC wouldn't have physically segregated him from the rest of the student body, suspended him or made him take rape awareness classes. The suggestion that Mark Sanchez is "squeaky clean" is an insult to the David Carrs and the PhilRivs of the world. Those guys are squeaky clean.

2. Even with just one year as a starter, many scouts/personell have him as the most NFL ready QB this year from college.

This one guy, Matt Stafford, is pretty good, too.

I remember college announcers saying how "NFL ready" Ken Dorsey was while he was in college, too, and how he "had the scouts drooling."

3. Please make the argument.

I know this is a race to the bottom with all four, but: Matt Leinart, John David Booty and Mitch Mustain.

4. Looks like Carroll went with Booty more out of loyalty (who was waiting for his "turn" forever). Most coaches will play their Sr/Jr QB's over their Fr/So QB's

Not if their freshmen and sophomores are better and ready. McCoy and Bradford will have started from their RS Freshman year. Tebow had an immediate role in the Florida offense as a true freshman. Most of these coaches would sell their own mother if it meant them winning one more game a year. Your notions of loyalty amongst this wolfpack are inspiring though. Trust me, at big programs like this, it's nothing like you think it is based on your repeated watching of Rudy.

5. Tebow, McCoy and possibly Bradford are not top 5 picks.

We'll just have to see, but I would certainly have taken Bradford over Sanchez right now.

6. He does not have a noodle arm. Scouts have said its every bit as good as Matt Ryan's. His arm strength is fine.

That will help Sanchez in all his games at the Georgia Dome. How many of those are the Jets scheduled to play?

7. Your attempt at humor offends me as a human being.

You're too sensitive, and I was wrong, he has chosen GQ as his debut point.

The Bachelor is sure to follow, though. The real loser here is Kellen Clemons, who will actually have to work for a living this year while Sanchez will heed Matt Leinart's experienced tutelage at the Southern California School of Clipboard Holding, which features courses in "How to Leverage your College Fame to Hang out with Models," "Ducking the Weightroom" and "How to Smile Pretty for the Cameras while Keeping your Uniform Minty Fresh.

When all is said and done, I predict no one will have leveraged one year of college football into more cash than this guy.

Agreed.

Its not the sexual assault charge that was dropped that bothers you but its this???? Are you kidding me. Fake id and underage drinking in college is American as apple pie

7. Your attempt at humor offends me as a human being.
You need to lighten up sanchez. The guy brought some really good points. I traded down and got two extra picks in the 2nd round in my rookie draft so someone could draft him pretty much for the reasons candy stated. He never impressed me in college, tremendous talent surrounded him and I think a lof his success was a product of that. :banned:

Bradford will be the best QB to hit the NFL since Manning. He has the total package. Leading the NCAA in Passer rating in his freshmen year is a good indication on how good he really is.

The hypes gonna be great until we keep seeing him in all these commercials even though he's a back-up in the NFL...cough...Quinn...cough

I still don't think Sanchez is an NFL talent. His upside is at best a descent game manager. I think everyone got mesmorized by his words, and forgot they were hiring a football player, not an ESPN analyst.

I say you are way wrong. But thanks for playing.

Are we talking about Sanchez's success as an NFL QB or a Fantasy QB?

If it's as an NFL QB, I could see him having a career very much like Ben Roethlisberger.

A game Manager in season one. Put in situations to succeed. A stud defense with a stud running game will take the pressure off. Year 2 with a little more experience, his game opens up a bit and it's off to the races.

If he has a career like Big Ben, even without the Super Bowl Title in year 1, he'll be a star.

If he does some magical stuff in the playoffs, he'll be Derek Jeter. Then he'll be immortal.

Wow. If you really compare Leinart's work ethic to Sanchez's then you have no clue what you're talking about. The two are worlds apart. And given that Mustain can't even win the starting job over the guys they have their now, you're well off base on that too. And JDBooty got the job mostly out of Carroll's respect for a guy who sat several years behind very good players.

You REALLY have no clue what you are talking about. Sanchez might bust but I think you may be in need of taking off the USC-Hater glasses for a minute. He's not flawless but most of your points don't actually wash.

The lack of experience, the unproven arm strength - those play. The rest? You just sound angry and I can't see why.

True Story:

On day 2 of the draft, Sal Palantonio is interviewing Sanchez and tosses him a softball asking if he wants to say anything to the NYC Latino community.

Sanchez, paraphrasing, in Spanish, says "Hello to my Mexican American friends. I'm excited and look forward to blah, blah, blah."

Now here's the thing. NYC's latino community is overwhelmingly Puerto Rican. Boriquas look down on Mexicans the way people from the northern US look down on southerners. So basically, his marketing base just got called rednecks by the new hillybilly in town.

It will interesting to see if the New York Ricans embrance Sanchez or not, but either way this was a pretty ignorant comment on his part.

I'm sorry but how the hell is he supposed to know that? Most Los Angelinos wouldn't any more than every NYC Puerto Rican would know the reverse. Sweet merciful Buddha.Man you guys are reaching here. Badly. You don't like him, fine. But stop stirring stuff up from nothing. This is really a ridiculous comment. Ignorant? maybe uninformed. Give the dude a break and let him learn about his new city.

People put negative connotations next to the word "ignorant" when they really shouldnt. On the other hand, given the money that is at stake, it was surprising to me at the time that his handlers would let such a comment happen.

I don't know why you flipped out over the anecdote I relayed, but whatevs.

I didn't flip - sorry if you took it that way.But it seems to me people are looking for reasons to point at sanchez and say 'LOOK HE'S FAILING'.

The guy - a day after he's drafted, fifteen minutes after he's in town - didn't know about the heavy Rican pop. I just can't imagine people took it as if his marketing base just got called rednecks by the new hillybilly in town.

I will say you are correct - ignorant has more negative connotations than it should and shouldn't be taken always as such. However the way you phrased it sounds more like 'that was stupid' than 'he didn't know better'.

For some reason I was thinking about this a few minutes ago and the more I think on it the more interesting it becomes. Sanchez was definitely a guy the latino community looked up to in LA. Given the divide you mention between various latino subcultures, I wonder if he will have issues crossing over.I mean, living in LA, his natural tendency was to assume Mexican but that's certainly not true across the country. Can he be accepted? Will he work at it? So many latino players cross over in baseball, but I don't know if they cross over within the community.

It's nothing more than a speedbump if he and his handlers deal with it properly, but I don't think it's something that can be just dismissed. My wife, who is Puerto Rican, is the one who pointed it out to me when it happened. Believe me when I say there is "attitude" between the two subcultures. Kinda funny when you look at it from an outsider's perspective; helped me understand some of my own prejudices...

;) You think that the notoriously rabid NYC media is going to cut him a break on stuff like that?

Anyway, do you realize that you're excusing the fact that a Latino was asked to say something to the Latino community, and he responded by assuming that Latinos=Mexicans? I'm reminded of one of my favorite lines from the movie Bull Durham, when Nuke Laloosh is knocking on Annie Savoy's door and can hear an Edith Piaf (a French singer) record playing inside:

"C'mon, Annie, open the door! I know you're in there! I can hear that crazy Mexican singer!"

The joke there of course is that a dumb white boy baseball player assumes that anything foreign is Mexican. If anything, what this shows is that Mark Sanchez - the product of the whitebred Orange County high schools that produced Carson Palmer - is about as Latino as I am, and I have red hair.
