Marvel's Thor is apparently a woman now (1 Viewer)

Yes, you read that right. Mjolnir will be wielded by a member of the fairer sex in an upcoming comic series. The announcement was made yesterday by Whoopi Goldberg, of all people.

I'm all for gender equality, even in comics, but why pick a character whose name is taken from the Norse god of thunder, and is used exclusively (to the best of my knowledge) as a male's name?

Comments? Opinions? Snide remarks?

You have to be worthy of lifting Mjolnir... then you are granted most of the powers and appearance.

"Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor."

Odins son Thor make a choice which leads him to become (at least in the moment) unworthy. The new Thor is a God

"He" of course being the operative word here.

In the last issue of Thor he finds out he has a sister that was thought to have been killed as an infant. I guess that's who will take te hammer when Thor becomes 'unworthy'.

Still stupid though. :/

Wayne, Garth, Thor (list of guys who are not worthy)

Why not just make a new female goddess character and leave Thor alone? He has a hammer, maybe she can have a nail.

Seriously, though, what kind of bad choice could Thor have made to make him so unworthy? Glory hole at a rest stop?

They have taken the hammer from Thor many times. It always ends up back with him and the other character often gets a consolation goodie.

Perhaps a screwdriver or orbital sander?
Some get their own hammer. IIRC Beta Ray Bill who became Thor for a while got his own hammer that was somehow related to Thor's.

Because that would not make the news?

why kill superman, or wolverine, or captain america? Why bring them back?

Stupid. I haven't read one of the actual comics in over 30 years, so stupid, but
so why do you care?

Was it stupid when an alien was Thor? Was it less stupid because presumably the alien had a penis?

If you have ever read comics you know they do #### like this to draw attention. Bruce Wayne is no longer batman....how could they!!!!! Steve rogers is no longer Captain America, SACRILEGE!!!

This is not substantially different from any one of a thousand other comic gimics over the years. It has far less impact than killing wolverine, which they are also doing.

But Logan will come back and Thor will be Thor again, it always comes back around.

I kind of thought the  was an indication of not caring. Thinking it's stupid and caring are two different things. And no they weren't any less stupid. I thought things like that were stupid when I was a kid buying these things every month, but I still bought them.

seems dumb, but as always it's just another marketing gimmick that worked if Woopi mentioned it.

No different really than when they mind-swapped Doc Ock into Peter Parker's mind to get a mention on Big Bang Theory or kill Superman or have Scarlet Spider take over for Spider-man...

You have to remember that at the end of the day that telling a quality story isn't nearly as important as selling things... and publicity sells even if the story is crap.

The fact that the news is spreading indicates it is working to some degree

Agree, that is effective marketing if you ask me.

When Marvel decides to gimmick up their titles they really go all in. I wonder what the motivation is, poor sales? Disney influence? With the success of the movies it's curious that they are messing with the comics so much. Though I have to admit I enjoyed The Superior Spider-Man until they drove it into the ground to set up bringing Peter Parker back.

Current and upcoming gimmicks:

1. Tony Stark is really adopted. The real Stark is his 'brother' Arno.
2. Steve Rogers loses his Super Soldierness and will be replaced as Captain America.
3. Wolverine loses his healing factor and will be killed off this fall.

There's probably a thread around here already but they are also killing Archie as he jumps in front of and takes a bullet for a gay friend. Take that Marvel!

For a gay friend who is an elected politician running on a gun control platform.

see none of this is new though, this has been what they have done for ages

I think it's mostly sales driven.

I'm not surprised at all when they do something to someone like Thor or Captain America who's comic doesn't sell particularly well.. but I am generally surprised when the do something to one of their flagship characters like a Batman, Superman, Spider-man, Wolverine who sell pretty well on their own without gimmicks.. well at least as well as a comic book can in 2014.

I think it's also writers who are desperately trying to make their mark on a character's history and make a name for themselves.

Some try with great stories.. far more do it with gimmicks in lieu of good storytelling

They really like to piss all over everything, don't they

Just stick with the villain of the month and leave it that

Comic book sales seem to be heading up, for now at least, so I'm sure we'll see more of these types of gimmicks.

definitely... and a new gimmick is making sure there are plenty of #1 issues every few weeks.. because for whatever reason #0, 0.1, and #1 issues sell well.. like people think collecting comics still might have future value.

A woman shouldn't have a hammer. She should have a spatula. AMIRITE?
Here's the thing... Marvel has said they want to be more open to appealing to both genders... but it's been proven that people don't buy chick comics... but they keep pushing this agenda.

Look at all the chick comics they put out:

Elektra

She-Hulk

Storm is getting her own book for awhile soon

Ms. Marvel

Those are just off the top of my head.

So of course... take a popular dude character and make him a chick... maybe #####es will buy that?

And no one buys that crap.
