Marvin Lewis - Throws his team under the bus (1 Viewer)

If you're winning, why would the owner rock the boat by firing the head coach? Doesn't happen.

Disclaimer: Broncos fan.Yes, the Chargers example is the most relevant for this particular discussion, although it's not perfectly analogous. Cincy has been pre-season Super Bowl contenders the last few years, but they haven't made the same noise San Diego has in the regular season. They've also never been labeled the "most talented roster in the NFL", so far as I know. But I do think it would be a mistake to fire Marvin Lewis for a 1-3 start to 2007, just as it was a mistake to fire Schotty for his 14-2 (0-1) 2006 season.

Calling for a coach's head should be done responsibly, not as a liquored up knee-jerk reaction after a painful loss. Is Marvin Lewis the best head coach for the Bengals right now? Perhaps not. It does seem that he has let certain individuals in the squad get away with too much, and he certainly has a poor record when it comes to targeting good character guys. But he has also changed the culture of the Bengals such that they get upset at a 1-3 start, as opposed to expecting it and shrugging their shoulders. And it appears that he is attempting to reel some of his guys in. He's not conceding defeat; he's fighting. For that, I think he deserves to at least finish a season with a losing record before any Who Deys start calling for a new head coach. I know the promise of a new head coach can be intoxicating; but the reality is that a new staff usually leaves you with a hangover that forces the same damning cycle to continue.

Perhaps the same intertia that kept the Brown family from attempting to make something truly positive happen in Cincinnati for so long will also help Marvin keep his job long enough for him to actually lose it.

How about a coach that gets nailed for 12 defenders on the field after a timeout. The problem starts at the top. Marvin Lewis has no accountability in his mind for anything. I would have fired him after his "I'm just the coach" appearance on the Dan Patrick show. He is the worst gameday coach in the NFL. Mike Brown owes it to his fans to sever ties with Marvin Lewis (we paid for his stadium). We Want Marty (too)!!!!
How quickly people forget that Marvin Lewis turned this team around from a joke of a team to a playoff contendor. He changed the philosophy in Cincy. How quickly everybody forgets.
What have you done for me lately? Just because a team was terrible does not doom them to mediocrity forever.
Cincy was dying for mediocrity before Lewis arrived.

I don't see Marvin going anywhere for a while. I think it would take this season turning into a disaster and then NEXT season not working out sufficiently well for him to go. They stuck with David Shula for 71 games for crying out loud! And Marvin certainly is infiinitely better than him.

Now as far as Breshnihan goes - I'm not as certain.
