More psychological than mathematical. The interesting aspect is the apparent ability to perform better under extra focus or intensity - not unlike the "contract year" phenomenon.

I take offense to the authors use of the phrase his catchers body disintegrating like a 72 Impala! Those things were indestructible BEASTS!
