Mathews vs. Tolbert (1 Viewer)

wow watching the RM clips again he is as good as advertised. I would love to aquirre and start both these gives, especially in their soft matchups. But then again this isn't a debate as some have tried to frame it, but this a SD team that is primed for a run in the playoffs. Their main problem in years past was relying on the air coryell-lite passing attack when 'playoff football' is about defense/running/clock mgmt.

Also like to add that this isn't a 'zero-sum' situation a la Charles/Jones. I have seen many packages that utilize both T-bert and RM on the field at the same time, which in many ways makes them both more valuable.

The REAL loser's here are the Darren Sproles owners of which I until recently was one... :bag:

It was kind of painful to watch that most recent tribute clip, because it reminds me how ####### awesome Darren Sproles is too. His downfall is that he is a great kick returner. I can't see how they don't trade him to somebody for a 1st or 2nd. Like GB wouldnt part with a first to put d sproles in that passing attack? :) sometimes I think I should try and be a GM. I've got enough of a pedigree (maybe I could go get a gig with Dooley at Tennessee :lmao: ) and it's obvious some of these guys just don't ####### get it. Like 6-8 gms.

lil game here. how many yards after contact does tolbert get in this 6 minute clip? How many times does he meet a LB/safety and they bounce off him like kids trying to tackle their older brother. I think ge's the real deal. Luckily so it seems does norv turner.

This logic of "yards after contact" bothers me. Tolbert ran through massive holes here and simply lowered his head. Mathews is a more dynamic playmaker and would be able to maneuver away from DB and safety tackles. Tolbert eyes a hole, goes through it and lowers his head. Sounds like a fullback to me!

Tolbert rums like a fullback, mathews runs like a tailback. Ill bet on the tailback to play the position as in time tolbert will end up playing the position he is designed for.

We've seen this time and time again and fullbacks can be a short term fill but eventually they go back to what they do best.

Like Mike Anderson in Denver...

"Fullback" on a 20 yd td reception

"fullback" on a 66 yd td reception [note the pylon dive while racing a DB to the pylon. That's a play a WR usually makes not a plodding FB. Not a "fullback" in the league who could do that from top to bottom...

tolbert/sproles 2009 highlight reel. watch the screen at 19 seconds vs oakland. Only goes for 13 or so yards but another showacse of his hands and athleticism.

Also note how quickly T-Bert goes from selling his 'block" to in and out of his break. I had to pause the tape and go back twice to even see it he was out there and ready to catch the football in under two seconds including his faux block:eek:

Not bad moves for s stonehanded FB who isn't a dynamic runner
he is decent. he is not a full time starting RB.

Mike Tolbert (at OAK): Ryan Mathews is a good start this week as well, but I would start Tolbert ahead of him. He's the battering ram who could be closing out the game if the Chargers build an early lead. That was the case in Week 4 with Tolbert getting 16 carries for 100 yards and a touchdown while Mathews was limited to nine carries for 55 yards and a touchdown. The Chargers will continue to be cautious with Mathews coming off his ankle injury in Week 2, but the Raiders shouldn't pose much of a threat in this matchup. Oakland is No. 31 in run defense and has allowed six touchdowns to opposing running backs, with four reaching double digits in Fantasy points. Tolbert and Mathews should thrive this week.

Absolutely hilarious "expert" explanation, given that Tolbert didn't touch the ball in the final 20 minutes of the game, whereas Mathews had more than half of his carries in the fourth quarter. The advice is OK, but the rationale is purely ridiculous. Apparently, he can't be bothered to actually watch the games. The dude needs a subscription to FBG, where at least he could look remotely informed just by reading the game recaps.

Yeah, he doesn't even need to watch the game...just scan a damn game log to see that Mathews was the one who got garbage time.

u think this FBG game log would;ve changed his write up?
RB Mike Tolbert, Rush: 16 - 100 - 1, Rec: 2 - 3 - 0 (2 targets)Tolbert had one of the best games of his career. Splitting time with the slightly injured starter Ryan Mathews, Tolbert made quick work of Arizona. It's becoming old hat to describe him as a powerful runner, but he simply is. He just runs over guys and always keeps his legs moving. But as we've been telling you for a long time, the power is not at the expense of his agility. He snagged a sweet one-handed pass by corralling it with one hand and pinning it against his helmet David Tyree-style on one play, for instance. On another, he took a quick lateral up the left side, displayed nice shiftiness to avoid LB Joey Porter, and cut back for thirteen yards. Later, he showed excellent footwork in bouncing rushes both inside and outside, at one point picking up 35 total yards over two consecutive rushes. His touchdown run was textbook rushing. He got everyone going left, then quickly spotted the hole and cut it back hard to the right. He leapt over his own down lineman on the ground, and easily waltzed into the end zone untouched from five yards out. If Tolbert hasn't earned a starting spot, he has quite easily earned himself a whole lot more playing time alongside Ryan Mathews moving forward.

Sorry... I used "game log" when I should have said "play by play"--something that CBS SportsLine puts out for each game & presumably accessible by a CBS writer. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/gametracker/p...20101003_ARI@SD

Not really seeing where Tollbert wasn't used when they were ahead for most of the game and really ahead all 3rd quarter/early fourth

Hipple,

I'm a RM owner and recently traded a wr3 for Tolbert.

I still stick to RM being the guy, but the fact remains that none of us can predict "the RB1" for this week.

If you don't recall, Mathews was coming off a high ankle sprain as well as some phantom elbow injury sustained during the week and not noted. (hence the tolbert start).

The fact of the matter here is that you are dreaming if you think Tolbert has usurped Mathews' role as starting RB for the Chargers. I fully expect BOTH of them to get close to, if not more than 100 yards (TDs possibly favoring Tolbert unless Mathews gets a long run TD).

On a final note, I own MJD, Hillis, Bradshaw, and Mathews. I can start 2 of them and another in the flex. Mathews is riding the pine this week, simply because no one really knows what the exact split will be this week. If you give it some time (maybe even this week?) you will see Mathews take the torch away from the almighty Tolbert.

If Best got hurt and Kevin Smith came in with his shredded knee and started vulturing carries from Best, you would know what's up.

I don't see how any coach could put Tolbert on the bench when he is averaging 5.5 ypc. I think it's a safe bet that Tolbert is going to see enough carries to warrant a start in fantasy leagues, but Mathews role is the big question mark.

All week long I had Mathews in my lineup and Tolbert on the pine. Just switched it. This means Mathews is probably going to blow the **** up!

Sorry Tolbert owners. Blame me.

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune believes Ryan Mathews will "probably not" start at Oakland on Sunday.

"But I expect he'll get 10-15 carries and a couple catches if all goes to plan," Acee predicts. Acee also revealed that Mathews' ankle injury sidelined him for part of Friday's practice. The elbow, while wrapped, is not a concern. Mike Tolbert, leading the league in yards after contact, will likely start for a third straight game. Both Bolts backs should be considered solid RB2 options against a Raiders defense allowing the second-most fantasy points to opposing runners.

as bad as the raiders run D is you could start BOTH mathews and tolbert and get decent fantasy points

Hmmm, all the talk after Mathews' week 2 ankle injury was that they wanted to make sure it was settled before playing him...so it's 3 weeks later, he only missed week 3, and it's lingering. Nice job guys...

Tolbert to continue to get hisUpdated 10/5/10Tolbert, Mike RB SDNews: Only six NFL running backs have scored more touchdowns this season after four games than has San Diego's Mike Tolbert. Still not labeled the starter as rookie Ryan Mathews continues to grasp that job after coming back from a high ankle sprain, Tolbert has just done his job and done it well this season. Running alongside Mathews Week 4, Tolbert picked up his first 100-yard game and scored a touchdown. Over his last three games, Tolbert is averaging 85 yards on the ground per contest and has scored three touchdowns. Heading into Week 5 in Oakland, he will face a Raiders team that is allowing opposing running backs more Fantasy points than any other NFL team except Buffalo, with which they are tied. Analysis: The Raiders have been ridiculously poor against the run this season. They kept the Rams to 75 yards and no touchdowns Week 2. In the Raiders' other three games they have given up an average of 179.3 yards per game on the ground with five touchdowns allowed. Texans RBs racked up 248 yards Week 4 with two touchdowns scored as Arian Foster ran 16 times for 131 yards and Derrick Ward chipped in 12 touches for 80 more and a touchdown of his own. Chris Johnson rushed for 142 yards and scored two touchdowns Week 1 against the Raiders' porous defense and Javon Ringer also racked up 33 yards and a TD. The Raiders have allowed enough points to go around and Tolbert has looked like the better Fantasy back in the early going over the rookie Mathews. Continue to view Tolbert as a low-end No. 1/top-end No. 2 Fantasy RB for Week 5.

nice. i didn't know that.

Damn this Tolbert vs Matthews thing is killing me. Got cornered into this, but I guess I could have worse problems.

From what I can figure out, Tolbert is probably good to beat Matthews in carries, receptions, and has a better chance to score a TD, but Matthews is a threat to get more yardage this week? Am I way off or...?

fwiw I'm not just hyping him and not using him. starting t-bert over MSW nate wash at flex in a PPR

benching him in a non ppr for best, charles, benson.

starting him over caddy, (knowshon/BJGE)

I bet you this guy  's T-B@rt

I'm benching Matthews for LT2 on Monday Night. I just don't know how this Matthews/Tolbert thing is going to play out. The fact that he was still limited on Friday concerns me enough to sit him this week.

I think that's a good read. And Mathews still has to tools to score from 10-50 yards out on any play. I think both these guys go off today. Look at how the OAK d has done especially in terms of blowing up another teams RB2

I'm starting both of these guys today and benching Torain and T.O. to do it.

Starting A. Foster, Matthews, and Tolbert as Flex.

I've been following this thread and I'm somewhat concerned with Mathews' role in the SD offense at this point. He's been on my bench the whole time but I'm starting him over LeSean McCoy today. Hoping I made a good choice! *Fingers crossed*

Some other punk in my league picked up Tolbert before I had a chance!

A.Foster and M.Forte both hit loooong td runs vs the raiders...if either of the SD rb`s are going to hit the long one it will be R.Mathews

I'd be a little surprised if Mathews got 10 touches today... He did show up on the injury report Fri...that can't be a good sign, can it? Screw it; I'm starting both. It's not like FJax or Ivory are such clearly superior starts this week.

Tolbert: 12 carries for 11 yards and a goal line TD

Mathews: 9 carries for 59 yards.

I must be missing something here as to why Tolbert is getting the majority of the carries.

If Tolbert doesn't go away soon, then Turner has determined the fate of his backfield.

I know people have tried to rationalize it, but I don't understand what Norv is doing w/ his personnel packages. Tolbert the "feature" back (if Mathews is still injured, then keep him off the field until healthy)? Why Sproles when in the spread inside the red zone (at least in previous games)?

Let the Ryan Mathews show begin, expect top 10 RB production from here on out. The Tolbert experiment is over.

Mathews the Man

Ryan Mathews will be the Chargers’ starting tailback soon, perhaps as soon as this week in St. Louis. He just needs to get through a week of practice healthy, able to absorb and implement the game plan and work on what will be required of him.

“I think Ryan will be our lead guy,” Turner said. “That’s why he’s here. I look forward to being our lead guy. (But) when you can’t do everything you need to in practice and you’re a month into your first year, there are lot of thing going on out there. We’re working for him to be the full-time guy, and I want him to be that guy.”

Mathews was limited in Friday’s practice due to residual soreness in his ankle, which he sprained in the season’s second game and which kept him out of the third game.

On Sunday, Mike Tolbert started and had more carries than Mathews for the second straight week. Mathews, while still leaving some yards on the field in part due to his trying to cut back, led the Chargers this with 59 yards on his nine carries. It was the second week in a row he averaged better than six yards a carry.

“He obviously gives us a burst,” Turner said.

After carrying 12 times for 11 yards and fumbling for the second time this season inside the 10-yard line – this time at the goal line – Tolbert wasn’t much in the talking mood.

“It happens,” he said. “You’ve got to move on. Good or bad, you’ve got to move on.”

I highly doubt top 10 #'s going forward... Tolbert is still gonna get touches; Sproles just has to be in for every 3rd down apparently to run that worthless draw play (need to justify the almost $7.3 million he's getting this year, I guess); heck, Hester will get a couple touches. Add the fact this is the Phillip Rivers show, I doubt the volume will be there....I humbly submit.

Norv Turner told reporters on Monday that he would like to get the ball to Ryan Mathews more, intimating that the running back’s ankle injury could have been the reason he had a smaller workload in recent weeks.“He’s a little bit sore but not to the point where I think he gets on an injury report or anything,” Turner said. “I think he made it through the soreness he had Friday and I think he’s ready to go. I hope he’s ready to go and carry the load or carry more of the load. When he gets an opportunity, he plays awfully well.”Seems like Turner feels us on the Mathews front. The Chargers coach must be as frustrated as we are watching Tolbert fumble away opportunities inside of the 10-yard line, like he did again on Sunday.“I thought (Tolbert) learned his lesson in Seattle,” Turner said, referring to a Tolbert’s fumble against the Seahawks in Week 3. “He turned the ball over on the 6-yard line going in (against Seattle). The play … it should never be a fumble. He understands that and he’ll understand it better now.”
Hopefully this means we'll see less of Tolbert and more of Mathews!

Hmmm just read this

Chargers rookie RB Ryan Mathews should return to the starting lineup soon, getting the bulk of the team's carries, possibly as early as Week 6 at St. Louis. Assuming that Mathews stays healthy during the week, the upshot for RB Mike Tolbert is a reduction in touches. Tolbert started each of the last two games, while Mathews dealt with an ankle injury. In Week 5 at Oakland, Tolbert had 12 carries for 11 yards and a touchdown, but he also lost a fumble. In addition to the likelihood of a smaller role, Tolbert will also face a much stingier rushing defense in the Rams, who have allowed just one rushing touchdown all season. (Updated 10/13/2010).AnalysisGiven that Tolbert struggled to produce with a dozen carries against a porous Raiders rush defense, he is not a recommended Fantasy start against the Rams, even if he does get more carries than Mathews. Tolbert should be left to owners in deeper leagues for Week 6.
Yes the Rams have only given up 1 rushing TD. BUT LOOK AT THE YARDAGE, especially to the RB2 (of which tollbert clearly is by the way-- assuming a healthy RM) a ton of that on receptions/screens which is kind of Tollberts forte, though I think Mathews has a big chance to accrue a lot of yardage too.I think he'll be a RB3 this week (suitable for bye week/injury replacement) but that his value has obviously gone down from previous weeks. The Raiders ate him up this week. I don't know where that came from. :lmao:

Matthews didn't practice today.
Rest, or is he hurt still?
Looks like both.
Sore ankle keeps Mathews from being lead tailback

BY KEVIN ACEE

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2010 AT 11:07 P.M.

The Chargers want Ryan Mathews to be their lead tailback, getting the bulk of the carries and building on the promise he has shown in limited touches.

But the same issue that has impeded the first-round draft pick thus far lingers.

Mathews sat out Monday’s practice with soreness in the ankle he sprained in the season’s second game. While Mathews said the pain is no worse than it was the previous week, Norv Turner has stated he would like Mathews to experience a full week of practice before giving him the bulk of the carries.

“I’m good,” Mathews said. “It’s just sore.”

Mathews reaggravated the ankle injury last week and was limited in Friday’s practice before the Oakland game. But he looked strong in gaining 59 yards on nine carries. For the season, he has just 43 carries, 20 fewer than Mike Tolbert. Tolbert is averaging 4.6 yards per carry, Mathews 5.1 yards.

“They know I’m ready,” Mathews said. “It’s just a matter of time. It’s healing slower than I expected, but I’m OK.”

Mathews misses practice Wed.: Chargers rookie RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) did not participate in Wednesday's practice as the team prepares to face the Rams in Week 6. Earlier in the week, coach Norv Turner said he expects Mathews to resume his starting role against the Rams if he practices throughout the week. (Updated 10/13/2010)

As a Matthews owner this is getting very frustrating. The biggest question i have is, why the heck are they giving him carries each week if he is not healthy? If they simply shut him down for the past few weeks, instead of limiting his carries, this would now be a non issue. Instead, each week he is "re-aggravating" the same injury for a few measly carries. At this rate, this is going to continue indefinitely. How hard is this?

From rotoworld:

Ryan Mathews (ankle) is expected to receive more carries this week after practicing without limitations in his return to the field Thursday."We want to push it and get him as many carries as we can," coach Norv Turner said. "He worked last Thursday and obviously was real sore on Friday and wasn’t able to do as much as we would like. I think from watching him today, and hopefully everything goes smooth tonight and he feels good in the morning, that we will be able to up his load a little bit." Check back Friday to be sure, but it sounds like Mathews is safe to use as a rock-solid RB2 against the Rams.

Very frustrated Matthews owner, I need some positive production from him ASAP! On the other hand, they shouldn't play him unless the ankle has healed, don't want this to linger all season. Also, that would allow me to start Tolbert with confidence!
